- An unassuming painting, hanging in a French woman's kitchen for years, turned out to be a remarkable early Renaissance masterpiece by the 13th-century painter Cimabue. Discovered during a house clearance, the painting, titled Christ Mocked, went on to fetch over €24 million at auction, becoming the most expensive medieval painting ever sold. The small, unsigned artwork, measuring just 26cm by 20cm, captivated bidders, ultimately reaching a staggering price of €19.5 million under the hammer and rising to over €26 million with fees included.
The Actéon auction house hailed the sale as the largest for a medieval painting and one of the top eight highest for a medieval or old master painting. The unexpected find now stands among the most expensive old painting sales, alongside the works of renowned artists like Leonardo da Vinci, Rubens, Rembrandt, and Raphael. Art experts confirmed the painting's authenticity through infrared reflectography, revealing its connection to a larger diptych Cimabue created in 1280 depicting scenes of Christ's passion and crucifixion. Only eleven works on wood have been attributed to Cimabue, making this discovery even more exceptional.
While the identity of the buyer remains undisclosed, Actéon revealed that a foreign museum had participated in the bidding. The astonishing revelation of this hidden treasure serves as a reminder that extraordinary artworks can be lurking in unexpected places, waiting to be discovered and appreciated.

Happy for her.
Happy? The government just the took it and didn't pay, thats the reality of finding treasures, once government finds out you found a precious and rare treasure, they will take it and leave.😒
Bro, she probably had only 1000 dollars given by the government
How more years left of her 😢 too little not too late?
Then I’d rather sell it to private owners without the government knowing
@@shirostillzsource? Don't tell me it's Joe.

who did she give the money
@@Juan-ge1fsthe goverment took it along with the painting. She didn’t get anything!

Wait till you see the never seen before relatives appear out of no where
Well said..
Hello how are you doing today?
Woman: hi do I know you?
Well of course you do silly I’m your granddaughter!
What is crazy to me is my great grandmother used to have religious paintings like those I remember them. However my family has fought over everything like dogs when we lose someone. Hence why I don’t talk to those monsters anymore. And I lost all the belongings I ever cared about it recently.
Oh hello, nice to see someone else with the same situation as me.. its disgusting what people will do just because they always want MORE. Extremely disgusting and i cant get over what happened when my dad died and im left with nothing cause i was fked over by my own family members in the dirtiest ways.. and even tho i dont need anything i just cant really get over it just bc its such a big shame on them and im expected now to "not tear the family apart" bc i dont want anything to do with them.. and i was the only child btw, so in theory there shouldnt even be a debate about all the stuff.. but my own uncle tricked me and stole all the things he could and at the end im left with nothing now.. If my dad would know what his own brother did after his death he would be incredibly pis.sed im sure.. and i didnt even mention the worst part..
Same....
Same i didn't have had luck of having a good family from both side of my parents..
But i thank god that my parents are nothing compared to the relatives as no matter what they've always got my back..
But still That really sucks and i always feels so sad and a bit like envy/jealous when i see how others ppls are bonded and happy with all their relatives/ families like i really wanted to ever experience this atleast once...even all my friends backstabbed me like EVER.! But trust me ppl like me and you have something so much more valuable than them relatives that why they are jealous/envy/evil-eyeing us and tries to steal everything that we had right to!
@@technoking6874you are 100% right. We don't trust people to give us but G-d. And if they don't like it their problem
I’m sorry that happened to you. I wish you peace, grace & love❤
Here I'm imagining what message those paintings got to have that value and how tf they know exactly how many there are out
!!!
Bruh you clearly sound do know nothing about value sht.... The video clearly explained that its from a Legendary Renaissance paintings means its OLD and valuable that's why its has a huge value and of course the painter of those painting surely know himself how many pieces he painted and the people he sell it that's why they know how many there are.
Rich people gonna get that money flowing in society 💸💸💸
There are still 5 out there...
It's just known from the historical records. And at least it's not as ridiculous as the prices of those modern arts.
All that oil and grease lol
Wait till you find out they used to paint paintings with oil paint........
They aren't the same mofo.
@@KiluaRotmgHow could you compare Oil paint and cooking oil grease 💀 ? Do you drink toilet water where poops are floating? . I mean it's still water according to your equation.
About psc's cmt,
it's ok for painting since there is glass cover. And we have technologies for restoration. Most of legendary old paintings were restored too.

it’s always the lovely individuals that are like “idk it’s not important/valuable, it’s just been in my family” that have the most valuable and unique items. very happy that worked out for her and her family
That is amazing! But I really love her stove!
The painting is nice ,but that stove. I love it!
My grandma used to have that painting until a 90 year old french woman stole it from us😢
Im surprised the man didnt just steal it and ran out lol
The family's careless use of a graven image is a greater statement towards the art collector community, and that statement is priceless.
can’t be me. don’t have any renaissance painting, so that’s one out of an equation.
😂😂😂
😂
Rick: I would give 20$ for that. I'm taking a risk with this painting.
😂😂😂omg😂😂 yea he's gonna have to have it framed and everything!! 😂😂
About a stove! Oh my goodness I hope it didn’t get too damaged.
The money is great. That art is IRREPLACEABLE
Imagine someone throws theirs away not ever knowing this.
Now this is really special
World needs to know this for sure
That's so neat ! Congratulations to her. Wow

Good example of how perception shapes value.
Rarity as well obviously.
Never take things in the kitchen for granted anymore! Imagine an old & small painting hanging on the kichen wall is worth US$26 Million Dollars & is part of a collection of a set of masterpieces! 🌷🌿
Above the stove😂 God love this woman. Good for her!❤

Now, imagine being 90 yrs old before finding this out and becoming a millionaire!! Hope she's in good health and gets to enjoy it a while!!

Over a stove...the worst possible place in a house to hang this Renaissance work of art!
Dude..... i have one very similar to this. And its obviously very old. I wouldnt even know where to take it though
Antiques roadshow, or call ypur local university art department or local catholic institution.
If you are in UK then take it to a reputable auction house : Bonhams or Christies - they will assess it for you 'honestly' 👍
Contact your local art museum. They would be willing to check it out.
Bring it to me and I'll give it back after I examine it in a few days
Btw, putting anybody directly above your stove is the absolute worst thing you could do. I can't imagine how much nasty grease and grime collected on that piece of artwork
This looks similar in style to a painting my Mom got from her Mother. We are going to have to get it checked.
That’s how rich people hide their money. They buy ugly paintings for millions
It's not how good is the apparel but who or where that is made much like the painting, they'd buy it not because it's beautiful but by who made it, especially if it was made by a legendary master! ☺️
Said by someone knows nothing about value of antiques and its savage value as time goes by. Pathetic.
@@rainierdy2808 truee some people doesn't really know nothing bout these things.
it's definitely not ugly it is just you have poor taste.
@@angelaaa6190 and it has a historical value too! 🙂

Wow! I need an old painting! 😌
Her children must be proud of their mother
She didn't really do much to be proud of but could be happy for her
Her children are now millionaires and will probably make business to keep the money running for generation thats an achievement
❤ Yes and thank you God of the Universe!
Nice luck.... That's better than a lottery.
But, does this mean all the relatives are going to come out of the woods to share the profit?
the way it was treated in the kitchen lol 😂😂😂
Imagine being a millionaire your whole life and not finding out till you're 90
Oh ma gawd 10 likes I'm famous! 🫠
The restorer screaming when they find out it was above the stove...
Yes I have 1❤ wait a little longer before I sell
Time to go treasure hunting at home i guess
I am going to hold onto mine until I get a better offer.
Above her stove… that does not sound so good😅 Hope the buyer can still enjoy the painting
You doesn't have to enjoy it, if it's you who bought it by looking to it, you'll enjoy it by bragging to your peers it was made by a legendary master and you bought it by a staggerring amount of money! 🙂☺️😂
PORTRAIT OF YOUTH REMASTERED (C)2006
This is an original song written about a very old painting. ❤
Wow that's AMAZING! Just think how funky that painting would be after being above a STOVE for so long?!? All that GREASE & food particles! 😂
God bless you Grandma
$26mil US for a "glorified corkboard." Not too shabby I must say. 😮
I'm glad they didn't scam her
I have a similar small painting but i don't have the money to hire an auctioneer, I've had it 46yrs,my great mother gave it to me and told me to keep it safe
Bet you that experts heart dropped when he heard they put tacks in it for shopping lists 😂
That racket in the background gives me hypertension!
It's so nice to be able to turn it off!
She didn't even know the value of that painting. What a sad thing! May God bless her.
Nice story, I will be waiting for a similar one :)
Love this story fairy tale or not😊❤
my house don't even have any painting.
😂😂😂
may you paint you own painting then
With beef oil, butter and glue.
happy for grand children
It’s disturbing to watch where the painting was hanging but …. Usually Europeans don’t do that. They have more common sense than to hang something right next to the cooking stove
Talk about HITTING the LOTTO!!!😎
War is dreadful. So much of our heritage is destroyed, or pilfered by the enemy, or found in the ruins and treasured as a souvenir.
Omg that dude when he saw the painting he must have fainted
The irony of all this is that she could have been Rich 40 years before this and lived a comfortable life if she had just checked on the painting.
It shows you, worth in objects are subjective.
Good for her!
I can’t stop thinking of the caked n grease from cooking on it just preserving it
Wait that looks similar to the painting my granny has ….. that’s what I wish I could say
Damn. 90 years old? She probably wished she found it 70 years earlier.
Who else immediately looked around their house
amazing
Very nice x
Ahh yes...NFT from Renaissance era
Imagine throwing it awY
That’s crazy🤯
WoW it survived all that cooking heat & grease 😱
$26 millions for a greasy shopping list board!!!! Millions of people are dying without food.
After tax, now shes left with 2 dollars and a pack of gum.
OMG! It was near the stove! 😫
And then the government comes and puts taxes on it, including several generations of inheritance tax 😅
Still a win in my opinion!
Price went up because cooking oil stains and pin holes made it unique
If it hanged over the stove for decades it must have been somewhat damaged from all the grease
That’s so cool
Yes my grandma have a old painting 😮
Good eye. A greasy old thing would be easy to overlook.
I wish she discovered earlier.
its sad to think that some of it mightve been thrown away
I’m the moron who looked and said, “Beautiful painting, but Wow! She has a Chambers stove!”
