Thanks very much. I'm a very recently converted Chandler fanatic. This lived up to my hopes and put a smile on my face.

Been on a Chandler for a few days and decided to type his name into the youtube search, and what a pleasant surprise to find this time-capsule of a conversation. Thanks for posting!

If only Arthur Conan Doyle could have been a part of this conversation. The perfect trinity of writing geniuses.

Most "old farts" have already forgotten what young airheads still have to learn, that is the problem. This interview is irony meeting flippancy - so true to their respective styles. Chandler is a cross cultural character - american 'can do bluntness' overlaid on British 'self aware mocking'. Not many authors are like that.

Flemming has a good point on how publishers often sadly let a lot of great books just go out of print, and be all but forgotten.
Fortunately, that wasn't the case for Flemming or Chandler.
    Great interview!

What a sweet chat. Was Fleming meant to be interviewing or did he just take on that role to keep the conversation moving? Priceless little insights in there.

The transcript misses A LOT towards the end. A shame, really.

can someone translate what Fleming was saying in the flip over between 3 & 4, why England doesn't have private eyes?

its strange.....RC is FAMOUS for his essay which details how REAL phillip marlowe is in comparison to christie and hammett and so many others
and yet HERE he admits that marlowe is FAR from REAL...hmm

RC...the "private -eye is a catalyst...he doesnt exist in real life"

Marlowe should never have married, Made him too ordinary, lost his knight-like aura of mystery and unreachability.
