Hi Roy, just found out about you recently and am loving these videos. I love it how you say "let's go home". It was "mennään kotio" instead of the normal "mennään kotiin" not sure which dialect that is but it's always so nice to hear :)
It’s so cool you say “kotio”. 🤗 I believe that’s maybe western Finnish dialect. Some people would say “mennään kotia”. However, normally it’s “menen kotiin” or in plural ”mennään kotiin”
Your Finnish is great! On some words your pronunciation is spot, on some you have a slightly Estonian sounding accent and on some you have the kind of accent you hear with most Foreigners that are from a Latin based language group 🤔 A really interesting mix of accents! Come spend more time in Finland and you'll sound like a native in no time (you already have a very good vocabulary so all you need to do is some fine tuning with pronunciation and postpositions), I for one would be glad to volunteer as a training conversation partner 😁 we could do half the conversations in Finnish and half in English so you could help me with my English pronunciation and I could help you with your Finnish, also it would be great to pick your brain a bit about the Finnish culture and life in general (as I love learning how other people see the world)
Thanks Warutteri. It's coming along for sure. Spending more time in Finland would help for sure. Our trip last year didn't happen but fingers crossed for this summer. Thank you for the offer. Not a lot of time at the moment but I have a few plans in the works. ;) .
The weather = sää and when you get back home laitat kahvin kiehumaan. The word (pannaan) is more often used for having ''fun'' with some one else in the bed. :) I think you should watch some finnish youtube vids. Im sure that will help with learning the spoken language.
When I read "laitat kahvin kiehumaan" I could hear my grandmothers voice. :) .. ha.. 'pannaan' that would have made for some more interesting subtitles.
I watch a fair number of Finnish UA-cam videos as well as some TV show's online and the news as well. It's getting a little better with trying to keep up.
"Pannaan kahvit kiehumaan" is definitely fine even though "pannaan" also means making love for the younger people. Older people used "naiminen" for same kind of making love word. Just makes you to sound like you are a bit older than you in reality are :D
panna is fine word to use whenever even though it also does mean having sex. Every1 understands if u just say it normally and not with a quirky laughing face.
How the f*ck are you so good in finnish😳 just found your channel and i'm just blown away... You speak so good finnish already.. Edit: i will watch all of your videos but your last name is finnish, so that must be something😂

Great Finnish! A tip: you often use the word "milloin" for "when", but usually the best word would be "kun". "Milloin" is pretty much exclusively used in questions, like "When do we leave?". In normal sentences use "kun". For example use "kun" here: "I will buy rye bread when I go to Finland." Fun fact: we met a ton of people like you when we performed in Finn Festival (?) in Toronto in 2015. The Finglish was the greatest 😂
Thank you Iiona. The Finn Fest is great. I didn't make it that year and the last few years they had some logistics trouble to get it all together. It used to be quite the event when I was little. Like a small migration of people every year to one location.
Oli mukava kuunnella kun puhut videolla suomea, ja sitä on vielä helppo ymmärtää. Osaat hienosti muodostaa lauseita, ja painottaa/ääntää sanat lauseen sisällä. Laitoin kanavan tilaukseen! :) Kohdassa 2:07 Metsässä kun seurasit eläimen jälkiä, yritit muistaa vastinetta sanalle "path" , se on "polku".
It is not easy to switch up from an analytic language to synthetic language. Some of the morfems in the end of the words are going wrong, but I understood everything you said, and you also pronounce every word you know really good. Hyvin menee, jatka samaan malliin!
Moi Roy! Aivan mahtava video ja kanava! Tilasin! Olen sitä mieltä, että kannattaa aina puhua suomea, kun vain voit. Sillä tavalla oppii hyvin! Ja virheitä tekee jokainen puhuessaan, myös me suomalaiset. Tärkeintä on vain puhua ja sillä laittaa saa harjoitusta! :)
I just randomly ended up here and I find this really funny for some reason :D not in an insulting way funny, just fun to watch you stumble through sentences and the forest :) your finnish is really good btw. Especially your pronounciation is very good!

Hi, I am the son of Finnish immigrants, the first one born here in '57. My brothers and sisters were all born in Finland. Finnish was my first and only language until I was about 3 years old. When I read your list of words I "see" pictures of the meanings. "Polku" I see feet walking or stepping "Plolkupyora (bicycle)" is "Foot Wheel" "Jalanjälkiä" I see "leftover feet or leavings of feet" "Kolmijalka" is three feet. The hardest thing is to separate out the Finglish and to know what is native and what is borrowed, like "traktori". I can hear the english behind many finnish words. I've been to finland twice (1963 and 1987). I think it's time to go again!
Tosi hyvinhän se menee. The most difficult thing about this language is we basically have two different versions, the official “kirjakieli” and then the spoken version which contains also all the dialects. For instance “kattomaan” is totally normal way to say “katsomaan” in a casual context. Ääntäminen on todella oikein, hyvältä kuulostaa.

ha.. kyllä, kyllä meni hyvin.
Joka kuuseen kurkottaa, se katajaan kapsahtaa. Vanha suomalainen sananlasku. Eli pikku hiljaa hyvä tulee! Ihan ymmärrettävää suomea puhut jo, nice!
haha varmasti.
That went really well! The difference is that you actually speak the spoken Finnish, not the written Finnish that sounds strange when spoken.
Kiitos argoXnG. It's interesting to try and read words now and see that I have been saying the "wrong" all my life.
You are getting there!
Kiitos Arttu.
Are your family from Karjala? Just asking because some of the words that you use.
Yes, they were from the area back in the day then moved up to Kuopio area when they needed to leave.
@@RoyRissanen ahh thats why you sound very similar to my friend from near Petrozavodsk
You speak really good finnish! Hyvää työtä, jatka samaan malliin!
Kiitos paljon random dude.
WELL DONE Roy! Hyvin menee Roy! Keep going! Jatka samaan malliin! Hyvä video
Kiitos paljon.
I think you should watch some finnish youtube vids. Im sure that will help with learning the spoken language.
When I read "laitat kahvin kiehumaan" I could hear my grandmothers voice. :)

Amazing! I understood everything!!!
Kiitos Eddy .
How the f*ck are you so good in finnish😳 just found your channel and i'm just blown away... You speak so good finnish already..
Edit: i will watch all of your videos but your last name is finnish, so that must be something😂
haha.. Kiitos. I grew up in a Finnish family in a Finnish community so I did not know very much English until I went to school. So you could say it's my mother tongue. I never did learn to read Finnish when I was younger so I've been working more on that now in my learning.
@@RoyRissanen you're doing very good god damn
Aivan mahtavaa katsoa tätä videota 🇫🇮🇫🇮
Tosi söpöä kun puhut suomea ja haahuilet metsässä hämmästellen luonnon ihmeitä ☺️
Sinun suomen kielen taito on parempaa kuin kenelläkään muulla kolmannen polven ulkosuomalaisella!
Olen ylpeä että puhut Suomea, haluat oppia ja pidät suomalaisuutta elossa siellä kaukana Kanadassa
🇨🇦 ❤️ 🇫🇮
Kiitos ulla. Olen ensimmäisen sukupolven ulkosuomalainen. :)
This was such a joy to watch
Thank you Maria. :)
Being half Finnish, i know how to speak Finnish basically. It is nice to observe other people talking Finnish
Thx Saira. Half the worlds feel like they’re just on the tip of my tongue.
Your Finnish is honestly really good! You should be very proud of yourself, it's a hard language to learn. Tosi hyvä!
Kiitos Kris. Whish I had more time to speak it.
Your finnish is so good your speaking is perfect and of course you dont know some words and finnish is so hard language
Thank you Tohoridoom. It's comming along.
Puhut hyvin suomea ulkomaanlaiseksi (You speak Finnish very well as a foreigner)
Kiitos. But for the record... olen suomalainen. :)
@@RoyRissanen olen pahoillani en tiennyt sitä(oh i' m sorry i didn't know that)
@@Kouda_1 Ei se mitää. :) Mutta sä tarvit laulaa millon sanot ... 'olen suomalainen'! haha.
It's really nice to see another Finnish-Canadian trying to keep up Finnish traditions. Kiitos Paljon!
Moi B.Ahopelto. Kiitos Kastsomisesta. :)
Käyttävät samaa polkua 🙃
Have to put all of these on cue cards. :)
Puhut todella hyvin suomea🤗. Olin aivan haltioissani kun kuuntelin sinua. Tsemppiä opiskeluun👍
Kiitos Kaija. :)
Great Finnish!
A tip: you often use the word "milloin" for "when", but usually the best word would be "kun". "Milloin" is pretty much exclusively used in questions, like "When do we leave?". In normal sentences use "kun". For example use "kun" here: "I will buy rye bread when I go to Finland."
Fun fact: we met a ton of people like you when we performed in Finn Festival (?) in Toronto in 2015. The Finglish was the greatest 😂
Thank you Iiona. The Finn Fest is great. I didn't make it that year and the last few years they had some logistics trouble to get it all together. It used to be quite the event when I was little. Like a small migration of people every year to one location.
Tosi hyvin puhut kyllä Suomea. Have to start following your channel 😊
Kiitos Marjo. :)
Puhut hyvin suomea!
Kiitos Aapeli.
Oi, kiva, sun aksentti on todella hyvää.
Laitoin kanavan tilaukseen! :)
Kohdassa 2:07 Metsässä kun seurasit eläimen jälkiä, yritit muistaa vastinetta sanalle "path" , se on "polku".
Kiitos paljon Miettinen. I really appriceate that. Kiitos Katsomisesta.
It is not easy to switch up from an analytic language to synthetic language. Some of the morfems in the end of the words are going wrong, but I understood everything you said, and you also pronounce every word you know really good.
Hyvin menee, jatka samaan malliin!
Kiitos Jorma. Yes, it's going to take some practice.
Hienosti sujuu! Jatka vain puhumista ja videoiden tekemistä. Tsemppiä!
Kiitos Susa.
Moi Roy! Aivan mahtava video ja kanava! Tilasin! Olen sitä mieltä, että kannattaa aina puhua suomea, kun vain voit. Sillä tavalla oppii hyvin! Ja virheitä tekee jokainen puhuessaan, myös me suomalaiset. Tärkeintä on vain puhua ja sillä laittaa saa harjoitusta! :)
Kiitos Teemu. Kylä Koitan.
I just randomly ended up here and I find this really funny for some reason :D not in an insulting way funny, just fun to watch you stumble through sentences and the forest :) your finnish is really good btw. Especially your pronounciation is very good!
ha.. Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching.
Vau! Täydellinen ääntämys. Ei muuta ku lisää harjottelua. Ja lisää videoita suomeksi!
Kiitos paljon Niko.
Well done man! You speak wery well! "Footprints" is called "Jälki" or "Jalanjälki" in finnish.
Kiitos Lontti
Ei kuka vaan mikä= Not who but what :) When you are talking about who in Finnish it is normally used about a person . Mikä täällä oli? What was here? Iso tie = big road but more like a path= polku . other then that your annunciation is pretty spot on i am glad that you haven't forgotten where your roots are :)
I just found your youtube channel few minutes ago, and im amazed how well you speak finnish, very clear and understandable! Very nice to listen!
You should make Q&A video, i would like to know more about you, and your relation to finnish, and i believe im not the only one!
Greetings from Joensuu, Finland!
Path/Trail = Polku
Rabbit = Jänis Rabbits = Jäniksiä
Footprints = Jalanjälkiä
Tripod = Kolmijalka
Pound = Pauna
Learned = oppinut/oppinu
Kiitos. That's an idea. I'll have to think about putting something together. There will be a lot more coming out in the next few months for sure. ;)
Hi, I am the son of Finnish immigrants, the first one born here in '57. My brothers and sisters were all born in Finland. Finnish was my first and only language until I was about 3 years old. When I read your list of words I "see" pictures of the meanings.
"Polku" I see feet walking or stepping
"Plolkupyora (bicycle)" is "Foot Wheel"
"Jalanjälkiä" I see "leftover feet or leavings of feet"
"Kolmijalka" is three feet.
The hardest thing is to separate out the Finglish and to know what is native and what is borrowed, like "traktori". I can hear the english behind many finnish words.
I've been to finland twice (1963 and 1987). I think it's time to go again!
Your finnish sounds very natural 👍
Thank you Anton.
Puhut todella hyvää suomea! You speak very good finnish
Kiitos Eeki. :)
Kauan olet puhunut suomea?
Kiitos opettaja 😊
