- 20XX. Mirai is an android who, since she left the factory, has always been at the service of the same person: Ren, a young 20 year old man suffering from an incurable disease. Despite the treatments, Ren’s health worsens day by day. Mirai, from her side, experiences real human feelings for the first time when she is about to lose Ren.
This film is a study project that I carried out last year. My goal was to make a short film on my own with the Japanese anime production style. This project took me about 8 months (from the script to the final version).

Imagine this becomes an anime and goes really into detail about his character and robot. Then he dies at the end only for the robot to be scrapped but still keeps the ring

Or a game which the main character sacrifice himself (overloading the nuclear reactor of his aircraft and detonating a 12 Mt nuke before his aircraft hits a 2 km asteroid at almost 55.000 km/h). On the end, the main character's best friend, on the middle of a field of flowers, sits and look at the sky, remembering her friend while the camera starts to point up, as a star shines and the screen fades black

0:32 Here he says "ohayou mirai". Initially one would simply believe he is greeting his robot caretaker. However, mirai in Japanese also means future. Thus "ohayou mirai" has the double meaning of him also saying "hello future" as if he is greeting the future that he is in, implying he expects himself to soon be unable to see it.

I didn't really get the story at first, but then I read the description and sadness hit like a ton of bricks dropped over a few days. I kept thinking about how sad this is. Ren tells Mirai that he'll always be with her, but she knows he's going to die soon, and I think he does too. He just wants to let her experience being human with him as much as he can before he is gone. What will happen to Mirai after Ren dies is a mystery. She could be scrapped, bought by someone else, set free, of thousands of other possibilities. My favorite thing about this story is how much interpretation is allowed. It reminds me of the end of The Giver (spoiler alert) where you can decide for yourself If Jonas died or lived. (Also don't bring up the giver sequels, I chose to believe that they don't exist.) anyway, those are my thoughts. 10/10, will sub, would watch and cry again.
Another book (spoilers) that has an ending to be left up to the reader is Orphan Island, but I'm not gonna spoil completely why so you can discover for urself
I would like to think that whether Ren had romantic feelings towards Mirai or just loved her platonically as a friend/family, by proposing to Mirai it meant that she would be given legal protection and independence as an android she might not otherwise have. This would keep her safe even after Ren passed away, because she would become his beneficiary so she wouldn't have to go into service for someone else or potentially be deactivated. Maybe this is at a point in the future where androids kind of have rights but aren't considered legal citizens automatically yet, so getting married would be the quickest route to being a citizen and not just a slave. The dialogue is so heartbreaking because you can tell they aren't trying to talk about the fact he is dying, even when that is the topic. She didn't ask "What will I do once you are gone?", she asked "Is.. it okay for me to stay here?" and Ren rather than just casually going "Yeah you can have my home" he just proposes to her. No words, no regret, no fear, just the purest expression of compassion he could offer.

The last day..
As I stare at my clock, I realize that I woke up a hour late, it’s not like I need to be anywhere though. I get up, put on my best outfit, and eat breakfast. I listen to the radio. The only station is the news, they say that today is February 25th, 2525, aka, the day that The the asteroid hits earth. Most of humanity has moved to mars, but for the poor people who couldn’t afford a ticket, they are stuck here, like me. I go for a stroll outside, just taking my last view of the world that I knew, before it fades to dust. It’s cold outside, snow is falling and it makes the ruined buildings seem less apocalyptic. Small snowflakes land on my eyelashes, it’s almost like it means nothing anymore. It’s not like I want to die, I just have lost hope. Everything will be gone, and all I can do is pray that there is a afterlife. It’s already lunch. I have a sandwich. Just a sandwich. And start to Walk to the cliff where I will view my last sunset in a few hours.. I pack a small dinner and start to walk. The walking turns into jogging and the jogging turns into running. Before I know it tears are streaming down my cheeks. In reality I don’t want it all to end. It’s like I’m trying to run away from my fate at hand but.. it’s not going to work. I run for about half a mile then stop and walk again. The sun starts to set. I made it to my viewing point. You can see the meteor hurdling towards earth. Even if I magically got enough money to fly to mars I wouldn’t get there in time. I sit at the edge of the cliff, My feet dangling off like curtains in the wind. I look up at the sunset, as I eat my dinner of a old can of soup with some bread. Exactly 2 minutes till the end.. the sky is darkening fast.. “this is the end..”, I say like someone should hear me. The orange light absorbs all surroundings. My hair flows free In the wind like a bird. All of a sudden the world as I know it turns to white. It’s over.. all of it. Nothing is left but dust and rocks in space.. I take my final breath.. “thank you”.

Here’s what I feel the song resembles:
To me, this song feels like it’s set in a time somewhere in the future. By then, we have, in a way, destroyed our world. It’s like we’re seeing the last of our world and saying goodbye to it. The deep feeling of guilt and emptiness, but at the same time, accepting the truth that there’s no going back now. Just watching as the world fades away, enjoying the last moments. It’s the calming but emotionally emptying reality of life and the truth that everything must come to an end..
