    Probably the best video out there on hitting a heavy bag. This guy is super clear and has great form. It's clear from the look, speed and sound of those punches he knows what he is talking about.....

      No problem brother, you have worked hard to craft --those God given talents. I will keep watching and promoting you to my friends on You Tube, etc. I am glad you review basics in boxing.....very important to the foundation. I will keep in touch. And thanks for keeping body punches alive....seemed like they were a dying art for a while with all these headhunters. Best, Rey

    Good video. I've done about 4-5 years MMA with boxing involved. After viewing the vid, I throw the same hooks as you, yet some guy came up to me while I was hitting the heavy bag at Retro Fitness telling me I was telegraphing them trying to show me how to do it his way. He seemed to be more concerned with trying to impress females, while he is punching the heavy bag with no gloves or anything on his hands, not so smart.
    I met an amateur boxer there & him and I will be working together as he's going to help me improve my boxing as it's the weaker point in my arsenal. I love taking advice and tips from people, and watching videos like JT's, but I have a problem with people coming up to you with an attitude like you're some 10 year old kid.
    I do the same thing working from the outside as if the bag is an opponent, practicing a lot of my jabs. JT is right at the end with keeping your other hand up that isn't throwing. I remember when doing focus pads or the heavy bag while training, if we didn't have our hands up, our trainer would come around and smack the hell out of the open area with his glove. This serves a purpose so you don't drop your hands in the ring, or even in a fight out on the street so you don't get ko'd. All it takes is one well placed punch to the face and lights out.

      JT Van V
      I have a question, hopefully you can help me out! I enjoy working out on the heavy bag and when I'm working on hooks I don't go too deep into the bag and try to hit towards the front of the bag like I'm taking a chip out of it but although I wrap my hands, I still get scraping cuts on my fingers (not my upper knuckles but the knuckles close to the finger nails, mainly on my pinky finger) Am I sliding too much after I throw my hooks and how can I prevent this? Thanks.

    • @PrecisionBoxing
      @PrecisionBoxing  9 років тому +10

      This is quite common, especially if you have been hitting the bag less than a year. A lot of guys will put small sponges or foam padding on their wraps or tape parts of their knuckles. It could also mean your gloves are too lose or not broken in enough to shape around your hand. This happens to me when i get new gloves

    Hey man, i do appreciate you, i only watch your channel, cause you actually take time and explain stuff, instead of showboating like a lot of others, just wanted to tell yah you’ve been very helpfull the past 2 weeks, I’ve been a power lifter for the past 25 years, and am new to this boxing! But I absolutely love it, cause i have ALOT to learn and i think you would agree the timing of wanting to learn probably isn’t the best right now, due to virus and would have to think the phrase “self made/taught” is pretty fucking accurate! So keep up the videos your doing a awsome job, thanks again bud...

  • @PrecisionBoxing

    Each sport has a sweet spot for various techniques. The problem is that your opponent is rarely going to offer you that perfect range, and since in the sport of boxing each exchange starts at the non-contact range, it's best to train and think from that standpoint most of the time. However, this doesn't mean its the only way to train, I have another video "Left Hook - Working on Range" which addresses more specifically what you are saying. You need to throw effective punches from all ranges

You have the passion in teaching others. You also put in some creativity in trying to make the lesson understood. I bet you're not reading from some prepared scripts while giving this tutorial. Good stuff, compadre. It's really important to develop good technique on the heavy bag, otherwise you spend a lot of time "perfecting faults'.
    Probably the most common mistake I see fighters make in their training is in timing and rhythm. It's important to time your shots like you would in an actual fight. A lot of guys end up just standing there and blasting away in an endless barrage.
    They also fall into a consistent rhythm, instead of constantly varying their punches. Any boxer worth his mouthpiece will quickly work out that kind of rhythm and make you pay with strong counters.
    If you haven't already,maybe you could put out a video focusing on those aspects of heavy bag/shadowbox work.
    Keep it up, JT, we're loving it out here!

    i dont know, I like to use different size bags, bigger ones for power and smaller ones for accuracy and movement
