  • I look at two different solenoids and show how different they really are. When creating your virtual pinball cabinet, go with the better option! My solenoids are custom manufactured for pinball machines and will last much longer than anything you can purchase at retail

    Great 👍
What is the model number of this better black version and is there any other way of telling them apart besides colour?

Why would you be running at lower voltages? I think the key points are longevity and loudness. IMHO

I was running at reduced voltage to show the difference in the magnetic field on both of them. I disassembled them both and found that the coil is wound a lot tighter in the black solenoid, hence much better magnetic field which translates to bring a lot louder. The red coil looks like it was hand wound and is probably aluminum although I was unable to verify that, while the black one was wound in a machine and is likely a copper coil

All I hear is clicks. Do these make louder noises up against wood?

Yes they are way louder once you mount them to the cabinet. When they are floating free they don't sound too loud because they actually move backwards when activated

The only difference between the Red and Black is the slight audible difference.. both are essentially the same quality.. I make custom high end vpins and have stopped using either of these.. only way to go is 24v actual pinball solenoids ( usually off early solid state Williams that are natively 24v )

I actually manufacture my own solenoids now and they work much better than either. And there is a big difference in the solenoids, some have welded wire VS others that are pressure fitted. The springs can differ in them which effects their hold current, and the top mounts are made differently which can also cause failures. I have tested some that only last about 100,000 cycles. The ones I make will last for over 10,000,000 cycles, so basically the life of the machine. That is even longer than some real pinball mechs.
