The stone finish work makes so much of a difference it's crazy! Even just taking a stock cylinder and giving the proper texture on the intake tract makes a difference. It can be night and day. That's why I love your videos so much, you know what you are doing through experience. 😎😎👍🏻👍🏻
You make it look easy. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Your calm, cool, no nonsense approach encourages me that I might be able to give this a try. Keep up the good work.
Iron Horse is looking to improve flow which is the key to making any 2 cycle engine fly. Ruff on intake side to break surface tension of fuel on exhaust side slick & polished to avoid carbon. I agree with his thinking. What if you cut slots in the crank weights at correct angle to give a fan effect. This will force fuel air mixture thru transfers I have done this on model engines and improved their performance greatly. Very small to 100 hp 2 cycle engines are the same. Port timing is tricky- gain here lose there. Do you want a work saw or a hotrod. Saw engineers were looking performance and unit to live. Love to watch your videos.
Luv your videos just listening to your stories and talking about 2stroke Engines is therapy to me, helps me take more consideration when im Repairing and selling garden equipment.
Dr. Ironhorse, congratulations to you sir as you’re closing in on 1,000 subs! I was #90, I think, and VERY MUCH enjoy and appreciate your educational videos! I searched for porting videos and IMO this is the best one I’ve watched and will no doubt watch over a few times. I live in corn country, south central Nebraska, so never been around timberlands and logging but since my youth have been intrigued and interested in logging. Firewood is as close as I’ll ever get but can play with chainsaws. I want to try a little porting. I plan to start with a couple of junk cylinders then hopefully do a couple old Homelites, XL12 and 340, then possible a 359 and a Dolmar PS5105 blah, blah, blah...Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Keep blest and blessing as you’re doing. Fat, gimpy, white haired, red faced, old, Nebraska fan thanks you.
Great video Ironhorse. First thing I do when I get home from work is check and see if you have a new video up. Thanks for taking the time for informative work.
Thanks Harvey for taking the time to give us all this great information! Can't wait to try it. Got to decide which saw I want to do first. Have a great day buddy!
First video I've watched, love your high tec tools, awesome attitude plain and simple, I want to learn how to port, I've found the man, thanks, and bovergout
That's a little scary at the start cutting Into that cylinder but by the end i had a good understanding of how it's done and iam very much impressed thanks for sharing mate
New subscriber Long Island, NY. Semi-retired landscape Contractor. I love chainsaws and doing tree work. I'm hoping to learn enough to supertune and old homelite bucking saw I have one day. After practice on junk. Glad I found you.
Great information ironhorse im gona keep watchn, but if any of that goes on with my saw, hopefully you be the 1 doin it, you do great work keep up the videos
After looking over the new cylinder I bought for the 372 that I am building; I now know why Stihl’s often have problems with the deco kicking out before the saw starts. Stihl saws have a deco port leading directly into the combustion cylinder, whine Husky has it on the side of the cylinder with only a small hole going into the cylinder. Not enough compression can act on the deco valve to close it early. Pretty simple physics to me. I just wonder why Stihl was so stupid in putting the deco directly into the combustion dome, where compression is the greatest.
good video , the benefit of air/oil cooled engines no water jackets or in the case of two strokes no valve guides to contend with. my brothers 75cc no name chinsese saw which i think may be of the ebay giantz brand has two large open walled transfer ports with the strip up the centre of each port (34mm wide , 36mm long), not enclosed like the one you worked on, his has the tunnel ram taper you talked about. its just a dissasembled junked saw. it has a 51mm bore and a dome piston , supprised me for a very cheap throw away.
OK ironhorse I completely understand everything ur doing on these porting jobs.... except the angles..... probably because I don't and never ported a 2 stroke..... I understand the grind but I know that you are also reshaping the port's so you can also put the charge in the jug where you want it to ignite..... if maybe you could explain in a little more detail about that in one of your videos.... I think I just need a little bit of that knowledge u have.... just a little.... so I can get my old brain 🧠 towards the right direction.... then I can head in the direction to think and think about it I will...then it can sink in and I will really get it...... have a good one sir.....
Another wicked vid Harv , thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge , we all appreciate it a lot! Very interesting and informative content 👍 I know you said before you weren’t talking anymore orders for saws till after buckin’ stock so that’s cool with me but maybe after buckin’ stock I might enquire about having some work done on one of mine , which are your favourite huskies to work on? I know you like the older ones , as do I! I’m not really into all that autotune jazz so I have several older xp huskies! Thanks again Harv much love 👍💪❤️
Ok. I'm 37 and NEVER done any aluminum work. I have the same exact tools you have sitting here.... I'm redoing a Kawasaki kdx220, case splitter came in from Amazon yesterday. I AM going to do this. You old timers know what the hell your doing. Who knows? I may go through. Lol I need to start a channel... Thanks for passing the knowledge
I can tell by the look of your hands sir that you've been around the block and you know what you're talkin about. You give great detail in teaching what you do and without criticizing people that this is their first time doing it.👍👍👍👍👍☝️ Subbed bells on
I am going through all your porting videos and I will go through them again and take notes. I'm trying to get myself brave enough to try porting a saw myself.
Nice dude👍👍 Mines all done, smoothed and dusted now. I think I may have tapered the divider further down than you have here, but I made sure not to leave it a knife edge. It started third pull and ticked over fine but it was late so left it at that. First outing today, I’ll let you know how it goes 👍
Ironhorse Chainsaw hello buddy, been using the 390xp today and what you told me to do is exactly what it needed :) Before, it had the rpm but the torque was low, now it has the rpm and the torque is spot on, it makes me smile 😀 Couple of questions please, do you think an unlimited coil is worth it, and, when the piston is at bdc I noticed the top of the piston slightly interferes with the bottom of the upper transfers. In one of your vids you said you had a get-a-round for that, what’s that and do you get gains? Thanks for all your advice, it’s been golden :)
Thanks for the video! I am hoping to give this a shot sometime in the near future. By the way..... those look like some Buckin’ Billy Ray Smith axes on the wall.
Do you have a video demonstration like this for a stihl open port? This has been the most informative, and believe it or not, concise demo I’ve seen. Thanks and well made sir.
Been busy Harvey the starter motor went on my Renault trafic van, you wouldn't believe it, front wheels off, splash guards out, bumper off, headlights out, radiator & aircon gizmos out,air box, steering fluid tank blah blah blah, fixtures & fastening everywhere, all to gain access to a starter motor!! Damn thing looked like it had been hit by a train!! They don't make em like they used to man! Had me stressed out haha, all good now 👍👍👍
Thanks for the video. I recently put a meteor 272 cylinder and piston on a Husky 61. (heard they were good quality) Not dialed in yet...Thinking I should do some porting now! I saw a comment you made say that I can use the same carb for this kind of switch? I hope she runs good because its in good shape...I also need to cut next winters firewood.
Great video! Thanks for taking the time to video the process and explain along the way. Helps a guy like me, who is a visual learner, see what is what. Take care all, and have a great rest of the week!
Love seeing the port work, thanks for sharing the knowledge Harvey. Would like to see a video on how you clean it up after, I know you mentioned soapy water etc... Do you run magnets through it or anything after to make sure?
Maybe a fellow could find a couple completely junk cylinders to just get the feel of his tools with, before tearing right into the money maker? Thanks for all the great videos and have a nice weekend!👍
100th comment! Hey ironhorse just found your channel. Love it. Just started porting my 365 special, gonna do gasket delete and muffler mod. was wondering if you would do a vid on post port tuning? Best wishes from . A wee scotsman arborist in new zealand.
Hey sorry just seen this notification now, yeah just wanting to know the tuning process once you have done work to the saws, and whether you would tune them differently depending on what you had done, higher revs ect.
AMAZING video. Id watch the next 3 hrs of you finishing it!! Still not convinced its something id tackle yet but getting closer. Lol. Thank you for sharing!!! STAY SAFE!!!
Same here! I don't want to think about attempting until I am confident I know every detail start to finish...3hrs would be awesome. Maybe a cut comparisons before and after to see the improvement! Thanks again!!!
Do you do any polishing after your done porting? I'm not an expert in fact I've never ported or polished anything, I've only paid to have my small block Chevy heads ported and polished so that's why I ask if you polish them cause I wanna do this to my Stihl MS-391.
Great video. I have been enjoying your channel the last couple of days. Do you work on the older echo Qv/Cs 8000 series saws? I am getting ready to drop a new top end on mine and plan on cleaning up the ports and transfers just a little before it goes in for now. Eventually I would like to send it to somebody to give it a more indepth massage.
Thanks so much for this vid harv gave me the confidence to port my 365 special which been running mint so far. Was wondering if you have any advice/ videos on porting closed port cylinders? Just bought a lovely 61 with scored piston so converting to 272 top end and would like to do some work to it before I chuck it in, I hope to send this saw to you one day in the future.
Hello ironhorse.nice to see how the pro's get the top results.whats best for increased tourqe? , Opening up lower transfer port area and funnel shape to stock upper transfer port with and little intake work...at that point if the exhaust port shape and timing were left untouched would there be any noticeable difference in running??💖
Hey love all your videos thank you I have a question I have a STIHL MS290 what can I do to get more out of it it's a very good saw it Dose everything I need it to do just want a little more
Hi Harvey, and community. I found a 272xp locally for $260 that I'd like to send directly to Ironhorse for the works! But my question is should I buy and build the 272 or hold out for a 372? Thx for the awesome video and have a good day everyone.
Hey ironhoese, I'm looking to build a 441c with a big bore, and if I can figure out what crank/ rod to use to stroke it, then port work and adjustable carb I've been a timber cutter in and out for 8 years, and tired of company baugyt just just get the job done saws, love the info, I'm leaning a lot I didn't know anmbout 2 strokes, thanks and I'd sit and watch for that three is so hours for you to really finish a good saw out,
Boy I am glad bucking sent me over to ck you out I am a full on horseman now I just love your hands on stuff and no bs, nature be a horseman to like and subscribe,

Pretty fun huh?
Great inspirational stuff, I’m off to my local chainsaw shop to rat thru the bin for a couple of junk cylinders to practice on. Thanks Harvey.
Great idea seems like 1 wrong move and the cylinders ruind

@@theironhorse6600 Friend, the revolutions 13200 max for the saw 372xp oe 2003 are okay?
Well now I'm building a saw 372 big bore
Hey Harvey what burrs do you prefer?
Does this require wrist pin changes often or is that the hot saws
Only the hot saws with titanium wristpins! They are very light but wear rapidly!
Does that sound like 15,000 rpm?

No! They adjust far enough!
