Other studies, however, find contrasting results. Butz and Ward (1979) suggest that economic upswings bring about the increased employment of women, making children more expensive during times of economic prosperity. Therefore fertility trends are likely to be counter-cyclical. Macunovich (1996) finds evidence for this expectation in the U.S. The negative relationship between economic growth and postponement also seems to be contradicted by some recent studies. Billingsley (2010) finds that the GDP in Eastern Europe after 1990 is positively correlated with fertility postponement, a result also observed in Hungary for the timing of first birth (Aassve et al. 2006). These latter studies are examples of a broader literature that adopts the economic crisis argument to explain the sharp decline in fertility that Central and Eastern European countries have undergone after the fall of communism. Once again, however, the evidence is mixed. Kohler and Kohler (2002), using Russian data, find, for instance, a negative association between a drop in GDP and TFR at the macro-level, but this finding is not observed at the micro-level.

Worst Case: $41,600 Likely: $21,300 Held within that amount is just the cost of just giving birth: $6,000--$28,491 Labor and delivery (If you're someone who doesn't have insurance you're looking at like $30,000-$50,000 for the delivery alone) Price sways depending on what assistance you'd need giving birth (C-Section, Epidermal, etc.) So let's say; you'd want roughly $30,000 disposable income set aside to ensure you don't die in childbirth. That amount also doesn't accommodate any pregnancy complications you may have to pay for prior to giving birth because I forgot about that fun possibility in those 9 months. Might be safest to double Labor and Delivery to $60,000 to ensure worst-case scenario pregnancy doesn't kill you either ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (AKA your job firing you for being pregnant; fatal complications, baby on a ventilator, etc.) Seems safest to me to have $71,600 set aside so that neither you nor your baby die in the first year. Oh! But, also, none of these estimates included Childcare facilities and maternity/paternity leave is not one full year. Google says the average is $321 a week. So, after you calculate childcare facilities into this; I bet that number is somewhere over $88,292. If you can't tell; I had given up gathering data on the exact prices midway because it was way out of our budget. Since we'd have to save so much, I was hoping to rely on IVF in the future. But if the AL ruling on embryos spreads; IVF is virtually unavailable because no one is going to provide fertility treatments if they might get slapped with a murder charge. "have more babies so they can grow up and pay into social security not because having and starting families is imperative to a nation.. no social security is more important."
I doesnt matter at this point. Even if the fertility rate doubled now, social security would still collapse within 20 years. In ten years (2034) the SS trust funds run out, meaning people will start getting 25% less. At the same time, in the 2030s we'll have so many people taking from SS that the amount of people paying into the program will be insufficient to fund the pay as you go component.
Young people can't afford homes, and definitely can't afford one with an extra bedroom, let alone the cost of a kid. We have basically told young people they don't matter. They are supposed to work more hours without time off or decent health insurance. Their kids wouldn't have a future anyway.
And you missed his point. What he is saying is that social security, just the interest on it alone, is leagues and bounds more than that. He says that the money wasn't stolen, but let's be realistic, the politicians spent a lot of Social Security money on other things. That's why current workers are paying for the Social Security of current retirees rather than current retirees paying for it, and that's the conclusion we have to come to when intragovernmental borrowing exists while the federal debt is much greater than the (purely) actuarial surplus for Social Security.
That money was supposed to be in a lock box. The ppl that stole it need to go to prison! Ssi has always been a scam, they never intended to give us 💩. In 1933, the average lifespan was 65 years. Non of our taxes are spent on the Federal level … they use it for bonds & sell them . All the money the federal government spends is printed from fiat & the national debt is a false crisis used by both parties. There is NO national debt , because we have the US dollar. The world owes the USA more than we owe anyone by leaps and bounds. You should really do some research into this matter..as you will find what I said is correct. Now States spend our State tax money… but the Feds don’t spend if any at all of taxes collected .
@JarpyJulio Ok, so let’s take what you’ve said at face value. The debt doesn’t matter versus the US owing the world money. That could really be true guys. But it sure as heck matters if the reason for this debt is the US Gov spending like drunken sailers. >You only got it half right.< The value of the dollar domestically matters for everyday citizens. The definition of INFLATION is the expansion of the money supply. It sure did expand -and that’s why prices exploded up. And will continue to as the Gov pumps more velocity into the system.

Labor & resources are the only 2 things a nation has & taxes are a tool to keep us working otherwise many people would be independent of work . The national debt is fantasy football. My point about other countries owing us , is the fact that if the US called in it’s debt … it exceeds our national debt by lots . Reason we don’t is because our national debt doesn’t exist & holding the payment books on other countries equals power . The Fed Reserve , Paper Money & US Dollar Standard are the 3 most powerful weapons on Earth

(Watch "The Birth Gap" documentary) Back to the US, every young person working today should be thinking very hard about a plan to have no reliance on SS or Medicare. Live simply, minimize luxuries that sap monthly income, live healthy to end up with minimal if any long term medications and put money away to be as self reliant as possible.

This isn't the whole story. Most people naturally want to have their own kids / families. There's not going to be this "global catastrophe". In fact the global population will increase beyond the colossal billions today to up to 10 billion. Population will only decrease moderately in particular areas. "Even raising the caps and doing all the taxes, you might get the shortfall on social security to $200B." Why is it Congress doesn't think twice about sending $200B to fund a war in Ukraine, but $200B to fund a social security shortfall is catastrophic? The US defense budget is over $800B. Consolidate the five services into one self-defense force and eliminate all redundancy and the bloated overhead (1 General Officer/Flag Officer for every 1,400 troops today versus 1 GO/FO for every 6,000 troops during WWII.) Do this and you'll have your $200B to cover the social security shortfall. But the long-term solution is returning the federal government back to its Constitutionally limited duties which means it will require substantially less funds to operate.

Let’s do some more math! How much have we spent in Ukraine? How much is spent on the UN, WEF,WHO, on illegal aliens, Bank bailouts, subsidies for billion dollar corporations who move work out of the country, foreign aid, drug companies who are pedaling poison… If you want to save Social Security then you need to quit stealing the money earmarked for Social Security. Stop giving SS to people who haven’t paid into it. If you want to help the handicapped and others it should be a separate fund. No money should go to Ukraine or any international organizations. The only corporations that get taxpayer money are the ones who hire more Americans than foreign interests. No more building things in China and collecting subsidies and tax breaks. That way we have a tax base to fund SS. We only provide tax dollars to businesses that are giving a fair return to taxpayers. And most important we must have a balanced budget. That means no more bridges to nowhere, no more too big to fail businesses, no more sweetheart deals for your friends and family. No more illegals collecting welfare benefits. No people from other countries collecting any kind of government benefits unless you have work full time for a twenty year period first as a citizen.
Good points but you may want to research the SS accounts because it is my understanding that there is already 2 separate SS accounts/trust fund. The SSI disability is one separate accounts than the Social Security retirement account.

This study seems to couter this.

@robertsenger5660 average income people paid the import taxes / tariffs that got baked into the cost of goods and services. I'm not saying one way or another what's "better" or "worse." The taxes are all income taxes but try to disguise themselves by using a different name or appearance. The real question is how regressive the taxes are? The sales tax can be better understood as a regressive tax that is actually quite a large amount, almost 10 percent income tax on low incomes. I once wrote down the estimated cost of having a single kid. With everything we'd need to provide for said kid in the first year. Here's my amounts.
Worst Case: $41,600
Likely: $21,300
Held within that amount is just the cost of just giving birth:
$6,000--$28,491 Labor and delivery
(If you're someone who doesn't have insurance you're looking at like $30,000-$50,000 for the delivery alone)
Price sways depending on what assistance you'd need giving birth (C-Section, Epidermal, etc.) So let's say; you'd want roughly $30,000 disposable income set aside to ensure you don't die in childbirth. That amount also doesn't accommodate any pregnancy complications you may have to pay for prior to giving birth because I forgot about that fun possibility in those 9 months. Might be safest to double Labor and Delivery to $60,000 to ensure worst-case scenario pregnancy doesn't kill you either ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
(AKA your job firing you for being pregnant; fatal complications, baby on a ventilator, etc.)
Seems safest to me to have $71,600 set aside so that neither you nor your baby die in the first year.
Not looking forward to the 10%-20% chance I get slapped with a murder charge myself for having a miscarriage.
