    Great video with some wonderful substitutes! You got 2 of the first 3 I thought of (Jefferson's Ocean and Angel Envy). Basil Hayden Toast had such good reviews from friends that I was excited to try it. I don't know if it's that I now enjoy higher proof, but I've had two bottles and neither of them memorable.

    • @ArtfullyBourbon
      @ArtfullyBourbon  6 місяців тому

      Ah yes, Basil Hayden is overrated. It's a good bourbon for someone starting out but a hard pass for us. Thanks for sharing.

    • @Vortex1988
      @Vortex1988 6 місяців тому

      Basil Hayden is a trap set for new whiskey drinkers that don't know any better. Most of it is 80-proof bulk whiskey that gets thrown into a bottle and label that is just a little bit different than anything else on the shelf, so it stands out a bit more. It's then priced around $40+ to make it seem a little more premium than other entry level whiskies, but all you're getting for that money is a bourbon that tastes like water and black pepper. You can easily find bourbons with more flavor that are just as good for beginners for $10-$20 less.

      totally agree and couldn't be more happy that people largely ignore and walk right by it. Fantastic flavor profile and simply like 1920 but proofed down. I prefer it safely beyond 1910. I remember finally getting an 1897 after continually being one of those people walking by it. I have a good number of bottles in the house and it is one of the fastest bottles I have gone through that I can remember. Also, in addition to 1915 (which is fun and good to blend up), make a 1907 blending up 1897 and 1915. 😍

There are far better, less expensive alternative Port finished out there. (The local Withered Oak Port finish comes readily to mind.) Agree with nearly every critique and recommendation in the video, except the first claim that EW Single Barrel is overrated. As a single barrel product, there will be variations from bottle to bottle, and while I have had a couple that I didn’t think were very good, I have had a greater number of bottles that were phenomenal. At the price point of around $35, it is hard to find a phenomenal single barrel. Perhaps the bottle you got was just one of those that doesn’t meet the highest standards.

    • @ArtfullyBourbon

    Henry McKenna 10 Year is definitely hit-and-miss! But, when they get it right (which is probably less than 25% of the time), it's exceptional. When it's not very good, it's really bad! It all depends on the barrel. You guys are spot on with the Old Forester alternate selections! 1910, 1920, 1870 or 1897 are a definite MUST HAVE! Guys..... You really need to figure out your definition of overrated/underrated. Evan Williams Bottled in Bond, Old Forester 1920, Old Forester 1910, Maker's Mark 46 Cask Strength, and Wild Turkey 101 are all critically acclaimed by the bourbon community. No one thinks they're underrated, and some of them probably get too much attention.
    Also, I have some bones to pick about Evan Williams Single Barrel and Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit. First of all, Evan Williams Single Barrel used to be available everywhere for $25-$30 before they made it a Kentucky exclusive. Bourbon enthusiasts have always known about it, but I don't think anyone has ever rated it higher than Evan Williams Bottled in Bond. It's just too bad that they made it a Kentucky exclusive and raised the price. Secondly, I don't know how you can call Kentucky Spirit overrated, since it's probably least known about and least understood Wild Turkey product. You also cannot call it the same as Wild Turkey 101, because it's not the same thing. Kentucky Spirit is a couple of years older than 101 and is also a single barrel, where 101 is a blend. Is 101 still a better value pick? Of course it is, but 101's praises are sung way more often than Kentucky Spirit's are, and they're two totally different products.
    Again, with Old Forester Statesman, most reviews have been negative when compared to the rest of Old Forester's whiskey row series. This is common knowledge, and 1910 and 1920 have been staples for bourbon enthusiasts for years. Statesman has never come close.
    Also, can we just get some of our information right? Nulu and Widow Jane both source their bourbons from other distilleries (primarily from mgp/Ross & Squib as I understand it). If either brand has a distillery at all, it hasn't been around long enough to put their own whiskey into a bottle. Nulu probably is overrated and Widow Jane is more established, but they are non-distilling producers and not "craft distilleries."
    I agree with you on most everything else. Henry McKenna 10 is kind of a tough one because the variability from bottle to bottle is so great. You can get some pretty boring whiskey there, but when it is good, it's pretty incredible. You are kind of rolling the dice with it though, where Knob Creek single barrels are more consistent.
    I've never been a fan of Angel's Envy because I think it tastes more like wine than whiskey. Even the 110 proof barrel picks have the same problem. The higher proof doesn't seem to help. Unfortunately, I have neglected to try any Bowman, and I really need to get around to buying a bottle, but I have also found that there are better ported boutbons out there. My favorite is from Woodinville.
    I agree with you on Jefferson's. Anytime I see the brand, I just keep walking. It's just more sourced bourbon with gimmicks attached to it.
    Russell's Reserve Single Barrel is definitely leagues above Blanton's in quality imo. I'm a big fan and would agree that it probably deserves more attention. Blanton's gets way too much love for a bourbon that is ultimately pretty average.
    I agree with you on the Peerless, but I'm not sure Michter's is a viable alternative, because it's just not a bourbon that I would buy. Michter's Bourbon has never impressed me, whether it's the regular stuff or the allocated 10 year.

      Thanks for sharing. We love getting feedback and comments, especially ones so well thought out and informative.
      Underrated was probably the wrong word to use. The underrated in this episode are our alternative recommendations based on taste or value.
      We have not tried the Woodinville Port Finish (only the bourbon) so we will need to do that. Thanks for the recommendation.

      Lots of people buy or add OF Statesman to menus based on marketing. Underrated is probably the wrong word. Recommend might be better. Cheers! 🥃

      Yeah, I think a better word to describe Statesman would be overvalued. The whiskey row series would be a much better value for the money, since they're all roughly the same price. Russells SiB is our reco replacement bottle for Blanton's. Better value, better bourbon, easier to find. Probably not underrated in a traditional sense. Thanks for watching!
