Hey, another trick, hack to starting a fire is to heat up Vasoline on the stove until it become liquid, soak cotton balls in the vasoline and take then out of the liquid and set them on aluminum foil to harden, then tear off the aluminum foil around the cotton balls and roll it up with the cotton ball inside. You can ball up 1 or 3 cotton balls at a time. Place a lot of these balls in a zip lock bag. Save these in your survival bag. They make great, great fire starters.
Just unfoil the aluminum ball open the aluminum out flat. Light the cotton ball you soaked in Vaseline. Be careful the flame is big and it will burn for at least 3- 5 minutes, giving you time to make a fire for cooking or heating outside. Try it.

right now i'm using some small cat food cans and stuffing them with rolls of corrugated cardboard with a cardboard wick. . The plan is to find some old candles or sealing wax and fill the corrugated spaces with melted wax and let the can be the candle container but I might try one with the petroleum jelly you suggest to see how that works. I'll bet it works just like a sterno. the vaseline would burn way faster than wax I think. That might be hot and fast enought to get the branches in my rocket stove burning.

I bought it at amazon May, 2021, for $4.54US.
    It now costs $16US now.
    That's a HUGE 352% price increase in 17+ months.

Another great way to start a fire is with a 9v battery and a small piece of Brillo or steel wool. Prepare your kindling and tinder, then place a small bit of Brillo on top and then invert the battery and press down on the wool. Ensuring that both poles, "+" and "-", are in contact with the wool at the same time. Once they are you've successfully shorted out the battery with the steel wool, now with the current running thru it, it will get hot like a car cigarette lighter and you just need to baby it to get it going from there. A word of caution, when your hiking or whatever and have these on your be sure you don't put them in the same pocket. Don't ask me how I know 😳

A good reminder that some minimalist prepper items may already be in your home...or your kid's school pencil case. The shavings provide much more surface area and the thinness provides less resistance to the heat of your spark. BTW: A lot of folks get the pronunciation wrong on "ferro" rods (short for ferrocerium). "Feral" refers to "wild"; e.g., "feral cats" will tear you up if you try to pet one (ask me how I know). Pencil sharpeners do work well for such an application, but they dent, chip, rust, and do break pretty easily. I have used one for this very thing, and had the blade break and slice through the tip of my finger. Try to get one that has the blade held down by a little screw instead of the little eyelet things if you have one for fires. They tend to have a slightly thicker blade.

Please talk about the incredible find of a paper barked birch tree in an emergency situation. Even when wet the bark of a paper barked birch tree will still burn. Not only that, but it also gives off a fairly large amount of safe drinkable water when tapped. It also has fructose in it which can help you keep going until you get rescued or find help.
The combination of these two elements of survival found in this tree make it a favorite to look for. During certain times of year you can get huge amounts of water from this tree. So please mention that in your next video and show how to tap the tree properly. Also another favorite trick of my family’s, grabbing pine needles from a pine tree and putting it in to the water while boiling it. You effectively make a vitamin C rich pine needle tea. This can help keep you from getting sick until you’re rescued.
Also don’t forget to look for oak trees. Oak trees often times are known for having all manner of fungi including both edible and non-edible. Finding an oak tree when stranded can be like finding gold. You may find enough food to get you through until you can be rescued.

Shop around and get one of the sharpeners that are made with a trap for catching the shavings. It'll only add slightly to the mass of your gear and it'll allow for use when the wind isn't cooperating. Also add to that a magnesium rod. You can use sharpener to shave off a bit of it and the trap will catch it so none is wasted.

ANOTHER good item for starting a fire, a magnifying glass. They are dirt cheap, and you can find them in almost every store. I haven`t seen anyone mention them.

Awesome idea and i just put a pencil sharpener in my little er bag! I will say though, it will be substantially more difficult to light when it is wet and no dry pine needles around. But like you said this will help to expose some dry wood underneath if its not saturated. I already keep char cloth and rope, straws with vaseline soaked cotton balls inside, and other whole soaked cotton balls, but this is a great backup if i run out of those. Hopefully i will never need this but thanks to you im going to try it out anyways! I was already looking at purchasing premade wood shaving/wax cups but will make my own now with my sons pencil shavings since im in an apartment and cant do much woodwork here to make sawdust and wood shavings. 👌

Crayon boxes have sharpeners in them and you can get the large ones with the larger sharpener in them that would work on a bit thicker sticks. Also the Crayons themselves work well in helping to get a fire started (they are wax).

I enjoy the ease of a magnifying glass which could weigh more depending on what u find but works even in windy conditions and super fast… now it obviously doesn’t work in the dark so having something else is a must also, however I make camp n get fire going before it’s to dark anyway! Give it a try yall!

Ever try using a Fresnel lens? Those things are so cool and are like mega-magnifyers! I've got a paper sized sheet set up on a stand ( Thanks KOR) and a wallet sized sheet that's the size of a credit card. Very light weight, much ligher than even a regular magnifying lense cuz it's plastic instead of solid glass. and works as fast since it's the same concept.

I've got one in the glove box of my car, one in my first aid kit, one in my stationary kit and one in my fire kit that has about six different methods in it for starting fire. Cotton and ash, char cloth, hemp fibre, coconut fibre, charcoal powder, dryer lint with a little wax on it, strips of old denim etc. I also have a zip lock bag in my stationary kit that I keep the shavings from my waterproof pencils in. But I also have somewhere between 20 and 30 knives all over the place as well as my edc on my belt that I can use for getting shavings. As for the other items............

Personally, I think there is a big difference between an "emergency" and "SHTF prepping". It's a matter of "what gets me out of a problem the fastest" vs "what will keep me alive the longest". Another way to look at it is "ready to use" vs "have time to collect and process". So, with that said, I have 2 lighters in my "emergency" kit and a box of lighters and a thick ferro rod w/ striker in my "SHTF prepping" supplies. I have a few cotton balls soaked in petroleum jelly in my "emergency" kit, but my pencil sharpeners and other wood processing tools are in my "SHTF prepping" supplies. You carry your "emergency" kit everywhere with you, but you don't bring your "SHTF prepping" supplies out when you leave the house. It's the same concept with a basic first aid kit vs a medical supplies box, or small packets/bottles of drinking water vs a 55 gallon water drum and gravity water filter system, or a few snack bars vs a sack of rice and a dozen cans of corned beef. Of course items in an "emergency" kit will change slightly depending on whether you live in the city or out in the country, have your own vehicle or take public transport. Hope this help with planning and preparation for anyone reading this.
