Yes, I have a couple sharpeners and a few pencils to use as dry tinder. Most pencils are made from cedar so they burn well. I also keep a pack of the trick birthday candles that relight themselves.
Hey, another trick, hack to starting a fire is to heat up Vasoline on the stove until it become liquid, soak cotton balls in the vasoline and take then out of the liquid and set them on aluminum foil to harden, then tear off the aluminum foil around the cotton balls and roll it up with the cotton ball inside. You can ball up 1 or 3 cotton balls at a time. Place a lot of these balls in a zip lock bag. Save these in your survival bag. They make great, great fire starters.
Just unfoil the aluminum ball open the aluminum out flat. Light the cotton ball you soaked in Vaseline. Be careful the flame is big and it will burn for at least 3- 5 minutes, giving you time to make a fire for cooking or heating outside. Try it.
I wonder what would happen if I repurposed an expended empty sterno can with metal snap on lid with a cotton ball soaked in vaseline surrounded by tissue soaked in alchohol inside this can?
Oooooohh.... Don't let the "famous" Dave Canterbury hear you say this. The only chemical accelerant he allows is the one HE sells.
right now i'm using some small cat food cans and stuffing them with rolls of corrugated cardboard with a cardboard wick. . The plan is to find some old candles or sealing wax and fill the corrugated spaces with melted wax and let the can be the candle container but I might try one with the petroleum jelly you suggest to see how that works. I'll bet it works just like a sterno. the vaseline would burn way faster than wax I think. That might be hot and fast enought to get the branches in my rocket stove burning.
Use the one from Home Depot or Lowes for carpenter pencils. Does larger and odd shapes. Been using one for years. Great video. 👍
If you've got pine trees look for pine cones or the remnants left by squirrels, most have pitch which is a good accelerant. Pine pitch can also be used on cuts to stop bleeding. Added bonus, it works as a natural bandage which has antibiotic/microbial properties.
@@Sublime_1 Squirrel's pitch it aside! 🐿️ After muchin on pine cones!
Some pine cones sweat sap!
✌️... The bleached whits cones are good for starting fires... just put some pitch down....now you got it!
People may not realize it, but this is a really great tip. Thank you!
Why would you say that? It’s obvious it’s a great tip and I’m sure everyone knows that it is.
In a real survival situation this "tip" is useless.a knife is much faster and doesn't care what size the sticks are
@@Ftybr57 if I needed a fire to cook or warm myself I'm not wasting time with this nonsense. A sharp knife is much faster and a more useful tool.
Go to any builders depot and you can buy a builders pencil sharpener ( for the big square pencils that we use ) they are about twice the size of the one you show but they can deal with a lot larger and tougher twigs etc, added bonus is the blade is a lot larger and can be removed and be used as a very effective cutting tool.
This is beyond cool! Thank you so much! Stay strong everyone! Keep prepping! 🌼
When i was a kid i found a stick that was sharpened and the shavings were next to the stick. This was next to a fire pit at a primitive campsite. The lightbulb went off in my head and I thought it was a great idea then. Everyone should have one of these as a backup.
Right on! This is new for this kid. Slip some dryer lint into your emergency fire kit.
Thank you, Mr. Homestead!
I have at least 3 pencil sharpeners, one even has a MAGNESIUM frame!
You can cut, file, or grind the magnesium frame corners for extra hot fire starting.
I bought it at amazon May, 2021, for $4.54US.
It now costs $16US now.
That's a HUGE 352% price increase in 17+ months.
The one I have is the "KUM 2-Hole Pencil Sharpener Magnesium Alloy Wedge".
It can sharpen regular AND the "fat" size pencils.
That means it can be used w/ a wider range of twig sizes.
Have a GREAT day, Neighbor!
Just bought the same sharpener you mentioned from Amazon for $5.65. They offered a 3 pack at a better value per unit, but the picture of the item was blurred, and I wasn't convinced I'd get the same thing as if I'd ordered the single, so I passed on it.
KUM makes the best sharpeners! Love the high quality and ease of changing blades.
Why so they make magnesium sharpeners? But that's nice to know that a sharpener can be used for other purposes.
Here in the UK, you can buy sharpeners for women's eye make-up. They have 2 holes, one pencil sized, one larger for eye crayons. Usually quite cheap to buy
As an adult leader in scouting I'm going to take this information and pass it on to our scouts! Thank you for the video.
This is awesome. Thank you for teaching people on your channel. Not just saying we are all gonna die. Thank you.
I’ve been saving the foil/paper from inside Marlboros, for several months. For all you who smoke: if you carefully remove the wrapper, you can use it just like foil gum wrappers; for starting a fire with a battery. I folded a bunch of the papers and put them in a sandwich size ziplock, to keep in my emergency backpack.
Good for you to keep in a wallet, along with a razor blade and a needle with thread for emergency sewing repair.
I carry a spare lightweight butane lighter, which is the perfect source of fire in which to light my Marlboro.
@@scottkaczor2065 I usually have like 2-3 in my pockets, Incase I lose my source of fire for which to light my Marlboro. should be good for quite a while if I need to make survival fires.
Another great way to start a fire is with a 9v battery and a small piece of Brillo or steel wool. Prepare your kindling and tinder, then place a small bit of Brillo on top and then invert the battery and press down on the wool. Ensuring that both poles, "+" and "-", are in contact with the wool at the same time. Once they are you've successfully shorted out the battery with the steel wool, now with the current running thru it, it will get hot like a car cigarette lighter and you just need to baby it to get it going from there. A word of caution, when your hiking or whatever and have these on your be sure you don't put them in the same pocket. Don't ask me how I know 😳
I always use a sharpener with a reservoir for the shavings. I usually get a really dry stick in the middle of summer and fill the reservoir up with shavings and carry it with my kit at all times. That way I always have some prime tinder ready, no matter what the conditions are.
We were using those in 1950's. Learned it from my Dad, who learned it from his. We also carried very small block planes so we could get much better shavings much more quickly. We used pencil sharpeners as a trick or fun fact. Small 2-inch block planes work much better.
A good reminder that some minimalist prepper items may already be in your home...or your kid's school pencil case. The shavings provide much more surface area and the thinness provides less resistance to the heat of your spark. BTW: A lot of folks get the pronunciation wrong on "ferro" rods (short for ferrocerium). "Feral" refers to "wild"; e.g., "feral cats" will tear you up if you try to pet one (ask me how I know). Sorry, I'm a word geek.
Was going to post the same about it being "Ferro", scrolled down to see if anyone else caught it and see you did so now I don't need too. :-)
Yeah I got my cotton ball/vaseline along with a flint starter in my backpacking pack. This is a good idea for a backup for my backup. Great vid... thank you.
Have that as well. I kept that with my truck camping gear. I used that a couple times already and it's really good.
@@reneerupert5830 I've been saving dryer lint, but only from cotton fabrics.
Belly button fluff, and any lint you can collect from your clothes. When you are on the move it's a constant supply. You can also shave it of your cotton clothing easily.
Try using a cheese grater on fatwood..you can buy a commercial "grater" and it works GREAT..I have a pencil sharpener in my kit..great channel!
Add a 2 hole sharpener if there's room. Big hole for jumbo size pencils, spare blade. As an aside, alot of people like to include a Sharpie permanent marker. Instead I pack a china marker that you "sharpen" by unwinding the strip of paper off. Provides more fire starting material.
Nice idea on The pencil sharpener. 😎👍🏼
Pine, cedar...ECT.. The Sap/resin
Good for putting on open wounds, for faster healing. It helps with stoping infection in cuts.
The sap is also a Fire starter.
And can be used to make torches, to see at night. (Look it up)
Keep some sap, in plastic baggie.
When the sap is melted in a simple tin can, it can be mixed with wood ashes to make a realy hard glue/sealant and you can water proof many things or plug a whole. It will get rock hard, when it's set.
Soooo many different uses.
Never seen this, but also did not see the cast! God Bless and stay safe.
Thanks Joey, trying to give my arm some air. just have to be careful, supposed to wear it for another 2 months
Take lint from your drier and add petroleum jelly to it and will light up in wind or rain to start a larger fire
I have this weird little cheese grater thing that is for wood and making tinder. Came with a ferro-rod and is part of my EDC stuff. Pencil sharpeners do work well for such an application, but they dent, chip, rust, and do break pretty easily. I have used one for this very thing, and had the blade break and slice through the tip of my finger. Try to get one that has the blade held down by a little screw instead of the little eyelet things if you have one for fires. They tend to have a slightly thicker blade.
This video just randomly popped up. I am absolutely amazed at you all’s creativity. I love the comment section! It’s obvious you guys have been thinking outside the box since childhood. It’s such a shame that today’s youngsters are being told to worry more about “perceived gender” than about being creative thinkers! I’m glad I’m 70. Things WERE better for kids back in the day.
Thanks Michelle!
Even back in my day times were good- sad times now! We will stay in the mountains 😄
You can also sharpen your pencil with it or sticks for spear fishing and frog gigging, crude arrows, tent stakes or even vc style punji sticks, fyi the ones they make for lumber pencils are alot more durable
Those are some of the things I thought of when I threw them in our bags. Can be used for multiple purposes.
Amazing. Thank you for the tip. Never would have thought of this.
I've been doing survival fire starting for years and I can't believe I never thought of this. Thanks for the vid.
I collect lint from the dryer filter. Probably a fail if it gets wet but with a striker rod it starts great!
I collect lint too and got an old ice tray and packed lint into each cube hole and melted candle wax and poured over the lint. Once it cooled and set up I had several little cubes for fire starters. I put them in a ziplock bag and keep them in my backpack. If they get wet it still starts bc of the wax. Doesn't really take that long to make once you have enough lint.
We all hope to have someone nearby like you when the SHTF! Well, this is the next best thing, because all these fantastic videos will be top of the mind when the time comes.
This channel is my favorite one to come to, because I have learned so much!! Homemade butter, canning tomatoes without a pressure canner, emergency heating, etc... The list goes in and in. Thanks, again!!
Sharon, don't forget to practice what you learn. This way you will retain the knowledge and your body and mind will be sure of itself and how to complete the tasks.
Too funny. Never ever gave this a thought until you held it up at the beginning. As soon as I seen it I was like I know exactly what he's doing with that. Awesome tip.
Who would have thunk it!! Lol. I'm 59 and never heard or thought of it. Once I had to use my pocket knife ( I always carry one) to shave branches. We had a terrible pour down that lasted all day & over night....Well now I'll be carrying a pencil sharpener. And their only a buck for 10. Thanks for the tip.
Awesome. Can't believe I've never heard this one from anyone. Always good to learn new tricks. Thank You.🇺🇲
That's pretty clever, a pencil sharpener is a lot easier to have around than a k-bar.
I hope you healed from your injury already, take care and thank you for the great advise.
Thank you very much Adrianna, just trying to give my arm some much needed air! Have to be extra careful, supposed to wear my brace for another 2 months ugh
@@RiversideHomesteadLife please take care of your arm, we need you healthy so you can keep teaching this 56 year old New Yorker good survival stuff, once again I’m so happy I came to your channel.
Yup I saw this on Alfie Aesthetics two years ago to get to the dry inside shavings in a wet twig. It’s light and packable in a big out bag. It’s an excellent tool.
Have you ever used steel wool and a 9 volt battery to start a fire?
So simple yet so GREAT! Thank you!
I have several makeup pencil sharpeners. I have some in my go bags. I didn't know I can use them for firestarter. Thanks.
Been prepping for 20 plus years. Never thought about a pencil sharpener... thanks
Great idea. Love my prepper Leaders. Also don't forget to use and save lint from the dryer. I was a Girl Scout Leader and that's free everyday and you can get a great pile from many families.
I carry a large pencil sharpeners and a carpenter's pencil in my handbag/ bug-out bag. I can sharpen the pencil and use the shavings in fire building. I can also carry a small sharpener to use with twigs.
Please talk about the incredible find of a paper barked birch tree in an emergency situation. Even when wet the bark of a paper barked birch tree will still burn. Not only that, but it also gives off a fairly large amount of safe drinkable water when tapped. It also has fructose in it which can help you keep going until you get rescued or find help.
The combination of these two elements of survival found in this tree make it a favorite to look for. During certain times of year you can get huge amounts of water from this tree. So please mention that in your next video and show how to tap the tree properly. Also another favorite trick of my family’s, grabbing pine needles from a pine tree and putting it in to the water while boiling it. You effectively make a vitamin C rich pine needle tea. This can help keep you from getting sick until you’re rescued.
Also don’t forget to look for oak trees. Oak trees often times are known for having all manner of fungi including both edible and non-edible. Finding an oak tree when stranded can be like finding gold. You may find enough food to get you through until you can be rescued.
look up the benefits of birch pollypore, A bracket fungi ,.must come off a living birch. i make a tea with honey & lemon with it, boosts your imune system & kills all tumour cells & much more, Yes birch trees are our natural chemist 👍
I have always used the one with the cover, it does the job and holds tinder as well.
Never thought of this little guy. Super amazing!
I have lots of these. Thanks!Looks like your arm is coming along nicely! 😃👍❤️

Thank you for the information. I never heard of using a pencil sharpener before.
Great idea 👍thanks for sharing this with us
Genious! Ya always see in the movies some poor guy cold and wet whittling with his knife. The guy with the pencil sharpener really got it made. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much I never thought of this simple but powerful
Love this idea and would never had thought of this-- but hope you do not overdo it by taking your brace off your hand too early.
Great idea for my multiple redundancy program! Thanks, Texas Deb 😁
Bro that was awesome, born and bred in the county side in New Zealand and you taught me something. 👍👍👍
Dang that is such a genius simple idea. Love it!
Hello from NJ
This is my first time seeing you and thank you for the tip that I'm going to share
Shop around and get one of the sharpeners that are made with a trap for catching the shavings. It'll only add slightly to the mass of your gear and it'll allow for use when the wind isn't cooperating. Also add to that a magnesium rod. You can use sharpener to shave off a bit of it and the trap will catch it so none is wasted.
ANOTHER good item for starting a fire, a magnifying glass. They are dirt cheap, and you can find them in almost every store. I haven`t seen anyone mention them.
Awesome idea and i just put a pencil sharpener in my little er bag! I will say though, it will be substantially more difficult to light when it is wet and no dry pine needles around. But like you said this will help to expose some dry wood underneath if its not saturated. I already keep char cloth and rope, straws with vaseline soaked cotton balls inside, and other whole soaked cotton balls, but this is a great backup if i run out of those. Hopefully i will never need this but thanks to you im going to try it out anyways! I was already looking at purchasing premade wood shaving/wax cups but will make my own now with my sons pencil shavings since im in an apartment and cant do much woodwork here to make sawdust and wood shavings. 👌
Que ideia interessante! Obrigada por partilhar.🙌
Good video. You should get a Carpenter's pencil sharpener ( about $ 2.00 at Walmart) which is made to sharpen larger pencils and also has an eyelet to secure it.
Who would have thought of such an idea! Good thinking. I have one from college.
Looks like that hand is doing better. Thanks for the vid. I forgot all about the pencil sharpener! Thanks for the reminder. 😮
Learning new things ! Luvly. Thx :)
Always room for new ideas. My students leave them in my room all the time.
Nice practical fire tip. Thanks for showing us and take care.
If you're new to bush craft survival and decide to pack in your bug out bag a ferro rod and pencil sharpener over a 70 cent bic lighter, may God be with you.
I also keep a small pad or 2 of 1 inch post it notes in my bag to use as tinder for fires. They are tiny and there are about 50 pieces on each little pad.
Thank you for all your videos! I love simplicity and love this hack. I hope you don't mind, but I'll be sharing this hack with my Subscribers now too. I'll be sure to give you credit and link your video! Thanks again!
Funny I found this video because for a long time I’ve carried a small pencil sharpener in my on the road truck bag. So love your videos brother. I recently found em so definitely more likes coming your way lol
It does make sense. Before I watched, I wouldn't have thought about a pencil sharpener being good for survival
Brilliant!! Thanks. 🔥
Keep one in my fire kit. Invaluable resource
Crayon boxes have sharpeners in them and you can get the large ones with the larger sharpener in them that would work on a bit thicker sticks. Also the Crayons themselves work well in helping to get a fire started (they are wax).
🤘🔥 VERY awesome!! Thank you ☺️
I keep a small zip loc bag that has a bunch of cotton balls that have been soaked in Vaseline. They are amazing for starting a quick fire.
I enjoy the ease of a magnifying glass which could weigh more depending on what u find but works even in windy conditions and super fast… now it obviously doesn’t work in the dark so having something else is a must also, however I make camp n get fire going before it’s to dark anyway! Give it a try yall!
Ever try using a Fresnel lens? Those things are so cool and are like mega-magnifyers! I've got a paper sized sheet set up on a stand ( Thanks KOR) and a wallet sized sheet that's the size of a credit card. Very light weight, much ligher than even a regular magnifying lense cuz it's plastic instead of solid glass. and works as fast since it's the same concept.
Thanks for the tip . Lol have everything except a simple pencil sharpener. God Bless
I've got one in the glove box of my car, one in my first aid kit, one in my stationary kit and one in my fire kit that has about six different methods in it for starting fire. Cotton and ash, char cloth, hemp fibre, coconut fibre, charcoal powder, dryer lint with a little wax on it, strips of old denim etc. I also have a zip lock bag in my stationary kit that I keep the shavings from my waterproof pencils in. But I also have somewhere between 20 and 30 knives all over the place as well as my edc on my belt that I can use for getting shavings. As for the other items............
Personally, I think there is a big difference between an "emergency" and "SHTF prepping". It's a matter of "what gets me out of a problem the fastest" vs "what will keep me alive the longest". Another way to look at it is "ready to use" vs "have time to collect and process". So, with that said, I have 2 lighters in my "emergency" kit and a box of lighters and a thick ferro rod w/ striker in my "SHTF prepping" supplies. I have a few cotton balls soaked in petroleum jelly in my "emergency" kit, but my pencil sharpeners and other wood processing tools are in my "SHTF prepping" supplies. You carry your "emergency" kit everywhere with you, but you don't bring your "SHTF prepping" supplies out when you leave the house. It's the same concept with a basic first aid kit vs a medical supplies box, or small packets/bottles of drinking water vs a 55 gallon water drum and gravity water filter system, or a few snack bars vs a sack of rice and a dozen cans of corned beef. Of course items in an "emergency" kit will change slightly depending on whether you live in the city or out in the country, have your own vehicle or take public transport. Hope this help with planning and preparation for anyone reading this.
Thanks for the tip; I have a couple of them!😁
I LOVE THIS!!!
While you're around that pine tree don't forget to look for sap. Sap will help your fire take off quickly, even if it's windy.
Yes, Thanks Renee!
