Mastering Space Survival: Your Ultimate 2024 Stationeers Starter Guide

  • A lot of updates have happened since I made my original Stationeers starter tutorial in 2022 and some of the things I show in that may no longer work, so I decided to make a 2024 version.
In this video I show you how to use your first hour in space survival game Stationeers to make sure you have the basics you will need for survival. This is not a "quick-start" guide - there are a great many tasks to do.
However, if you are a beginner, it will give you enough direction during your first hour so that you get from lander full of supplies to the beginnings of the space station you always wanted - without freezing, starving, dying of thirst, or "soft locking" yourself by wasting resources before you can replenish them.
In 60(ish) minutes you'll learn how to:
    * Build a starter base: Lay the foundations for you future base with a simple, repeatable layout
    * Secure your key supplies: Ensure you get everything off the landers before they are destroyed by storms
    * Set up basic power: Get some early power generation going to keep you suit battery charged and run a simple base
    * Set up smelting and basic building machinery: Crafting essentials for your base
    * Mining Strategy: Not sure what ores to prioritize? I’ve got the answers
    * Set up an airlock: Simple when you know how, but the first real engineering challenge you'll face as a Stationeer
    * Pressurise your base using local resources: How to quickly use locally mined ices to get your base habitable and save those pure gases from your lander for later use
    * Produce fresh water from local ice: Because that tank you arrived with isn't going to last forever
    * Warm and clean the atmosphere to make it safe for plants and humans: Get the temperature just right and remove the flammable and toxic gases that will kill your food crop before you can eat it
    * Start your first crops growing: Get hydroponics set up and your grow lights working so you can plant your first crop
    * Make your first steel: Most of the most advanced machinery and equipment you need requires steel to make so forging your first ingot is a key milestone, and will give you the infrastructure you need to also make solder, electrum, invar and constantan
By the end of this video you'll have everything you need to replenish your power, food, air and water and have the basis for making the advanced materials you'll need to get started on the space hab of your dreams!
If you've just bought the game on Steam and aren't sure if you'll like it, you can complete this build within your "first 2 hours" time window. If you've owned the game for a while and not really got into it, hopefully this will give you a springboard to get started. And if you've owned the game for ages and got hundreds of hours, I hope you can still enjoy it, even if only for the bit where I forget to shut my helmet :)
There's a lot of information in this first hour and I do a lot of tasks in parallel to avoid any time wasting. As a result, you may find my specific "How To" videos for individual steps are slower paced and more modular and therefore easier to follow, but bear in mind they date from 2022 and you may notice some changes in this later version. (I will be remaking them when I get time)
The game is still in active development and systems may change in future, so you'll need to check the details but this guide will give you a good overview of the main tasks you'll need to perform in the first hour to secure your survival in your new home.

Very nice start, I have to do too much thinking to make this much progress in such a short time. Here's a couple tips for newer players.
I've found that the suit light actually drains an unreasonable amount of power so I try to only turn it on when I need it. The portable solar recharger sucks if you're trying to charge large batteries with it, but if you just use it to swap your tool batteries into it before your solar power is up and running then it works fine for what it is.
For anyone who is paranoid of the lander being taken away in a storm you can try to dig a little tunnel to put your crates into, or you can print 'container mounts' for 10 iron each from the autolathe and wrench them in place. You might be better off printing 2 'locker' kits for 5 iron each and using the large locker since it has more storage space than a regular crate and isn't as bulky, you just lose the portability of the crate. Once you have emptied a crate you can use the hand drill on it to pack it up so it's not getting in the way, too.

Thank you for the tip of the "C" button... that was really good tip. I have always wondered how YTbers manage to do the cabling so fast.
And I have soon 900h in this game. Thank you very much.

You can also lower your target temperature to reduce battery usage. This can actually be a pretty significant power savings at the start.

I didn't start with a Portable Hydroponics, instead I have Hydroponics Trays. Is this something to do with difficulty settings? Or did an update change starting equipment? Cheers for the video, it's super helpful!

Leaving a comment in case anyone else swings by and is confused on how to proceed as well.
An update changed the starting equipment.
Time to learn how to setup Hydroponics Trays!

So how is the airlock working when it is separating 2 atmospheres like on mars with only 1 holding tank? Are you contaminating your hab with mars gasses or are you wasting your atmo every time you leave?

It easier to move crates and tanks if you pull them through doors/openings backwards.

Aye, 60 minutes is a pretty short tutorial for this game. It's a "getting started" type. I'm not sure why you're complaining. I've watched movies over 2 hours long. 60 minutes is short and sweet. 24 hours in a day. Giving 1 up, easy.

@@murk9111 Technically I believe that is the game's explanation, the sort of "mineral" coal is considered in the furnace is just "hydrocarbons". A funny thought I had is that Mars was terraformed and colonized, but then died out millions/billions of years later and you're just re-colonizing it.

Is there anything to do in this game beside building and gathering? or is it just another LEGO in space?
