  • Just How Powerful is M134 Gatling Gun.
The M134 is a US-made minigun. General Electric created it in 1960 as armament for helicopters and to be used in aircraft gun pods. The US Army designation is M134; however, the marketing name Minigun has become popular and is even used to refer to rotary barrel weapons in general. The M134 has been tested as a tripod-mounted infantry weapon, but it cannot be used as a man-portable weapon, contrary to popular belief.
"Minigun" refers to a specific model of weapon that General Electric originally produced, but the term "minigun" has popularly come to refer to any externally powered rotary gun of rifle caliber. The term is sometimes used loosely to refer to guns of similar rates of fire and configuration, regardless of power source and caliber.
The Gatling principle is used in the M134, which has a six barrel rotary assembly. Ammunition is fed either linklessly or through belts that pass through a delinking device. The gun is powered externally and has a quick spin up time. When used manually, the gun is mounted on a single arm that swivels horizontally and vertically. The gun is fired with spade grips, a sight unit, and tracer ammunition for targeting.
