Own movie channel and so many variants, that it immediately rivaled the BBC and still going strong since 1982: on that note, the date was 2nd November, my dad's 41st birthday (passed away over ten years ago) - either way, Channel 4 is a force to be reckoned with.
I think they changed it around the same time as the fourscore music, they needed to pay the creator of Fourscore £3.50p every time they used the melody, it was costing them £1000 a week and that was back in 82. 10 years later they stopped using it.

The thing is, they wouldn't use a multicoloured logo like this nowadays as it would be considered a little childish. Now channels tend to use only one or two distinctive colours which represent the channel. For example BBC Ones initial color is red at the moment, and BBC Two's initial colour is greeny blue. I suppose that if a channel sticks with one colour, or two at the most, it's easily recognisable.
The final logos were actually computer generated by the Digital Scene Simulation dept. of Information International Inc (triple-I) in Culver City, California. They also provided CGI for the films Westworld and Tron.

I think the ITV3 and ITV4 idents that were introduced in 2013 will last for more than 14 years. There's no way they'd ever be updated.

The (colour) Thames ident was the longest to be used however, being used from 1969 until 1988 when it was replaced by the Thames XXI ident.
