His camera and editing are more montage-like than his previous action direction, but he was mostly with Sammo on the big action pictures. He was with Sammo on The Victim (1980), Two Toothless Tigers (1980), and Prodigal Son (1981). All of these have blazing fast action, but the camera and editing were still the older style - less editing, longer takes, gags done in the wide. In this, there's a lot of action done as single moves in a take, which amps up tension. I think the pacing isn't there yet, but it would get there. He joins Sammo the next year on Carry On Pickpocket and Sammo has basically adopted this same shooting and editing style, and it becomes a key part of Sammo's action design for the next 8 years. Billy Chan is last solely credited on Heart of Dragon, and after that (I assume) he's absorbed into the Hung Ga Baan team because the style basically remains the same until Pedicab Driver, when things ratchet up a notch, until Sammo's budgets decrease with Slickers VS. Killers (1991). After that Sammo's style takes a major hit and never quite recovers. Jackie, however, kept making hits. His style, ironically, is more economical. Less editing, longer shots in the wide, but tons of takes. This is tough for the performers, but they're used to it. It's far easier for the crew. I have a feeling Jackie's filmmaking crew really liked working with him, and Sammo's might have hated doing a hundred setups in a single day. And that's why this Billy Chan/Sammo hybrid style just couldn't sustain.

This movie is very good! Not too much kung fu, but lots of intriguing mystery
