Simön Faur I also think voting for your boss is a misnomer, because if someone is your boss, they have power over you due to the fact that they own the business itself. That power is coercive, no matter to what extent. I believe that that power dynamic is unjustified, just as a watery tart handing swords is not a valid basis of government. I concede that my language was less than concise and I did misread your comment as a critique of anarchism, instead of what I now assume was a critique of method of implementation. So I apologize for any misinterpretations that stem from that. More of my point is that these kind of structures as they exist are unjust, and we should actively engage in discussion about how to justly and swiftly reorganize our society without trampling on people’s freedoms.
@@talkeetnatattoos This is an odd sweeping statement, as it really depends on which actors and comedians you're talking about. Ever watched actor and comedian George Carlin, for example? The best comedy has always been based in the truth, at least at some level, as it pokes fun at the truth, which the audience can recognise. Satire is a form of comedy that is universal and political in nature. It is useful for pointing out flaws in our ideas about politics in a way which is thought-provoking, humourous and understandable, which makes the message more likely to reach masses of people. Or is your problem with comedians or actors influencing political thought, actually that political ideas aren't legitimate unless spouted by some professor in a terribly intricate and clever way, so ordinary people (who don't have the time or energy to read mountains of political literature, and therefore are obviously not capable of making benevolent judgements or decisions for themselves) shouldn't be able to access or understand those ideas? I fear for the future of our children and their children (and so on, and so on) if we continue to allow a short-sighted greed-driven system to create ever-increasing poverty for the insane wealth of a few, and decimate our planet's resources in the process. I'm sure plenty of actors and comedians defend this system, but so do many learned political thinkers, doesn't mean any of them are justified or correct in doing so. No matter how an idea is introduced to you, it is always up to you to think for yourself and try to figure out what you believe.
The best thing about this after studying Medieval History in college is that these people wouldn't be that odd during The High and Later Middle Ages, as there was a fuck ton of peasant revolts during these periods and a decent amount of societies that based themselves in what we could call "proto-anarchism/communism". A great example is the Swiss Confederation, which has its origin in the Late Middle Ages when a confederation on rural communes (and a few urban) rebelled against the Habsburg hegemony in the 14th Century a gained independence.

I initially thought, when I was younger, that the joke was to mock the esotericism and obscurity of alternative politics (like Syndicalism and Anarchism), even if I couldn't have put it into so many words at 15. 24 now, and I've reinterpreted this scene. I think the joke is more about the absurdity of "woke"/socially conscious/enlightened peasants. How on earth did they get so educated on their situation? _THEY CAN'T READ!_ Its a nice touch that- here's the kicker- Dennis is right. Anarcho-Syndicalism may not be your flavor of politics (it ain't mine), but Dennis is completely right about their circumstances. It is about class, its a feudal structure. Its a kingdom! That's absolutely a self-perpetuating autocracy. And Arthur most definitely got that crown by exploiting the peasants and hanging onto outdated dogma. So its also mocking our vision of arthurian legend, the past, and the middle ages altogether. Dennis is basically saying to us "you know this whole thing is kinda fucked, right?"
Gotta say, I find it interesting how many people are like "you know, these leftists sure are right about a lot of things", but refuse to identify with or adapt the underlying philosophy or ideological tendencies. "Oh! What a give away. Did you hear that? Did you hear that, aye? That's what I'm on about!" That's me whenever a politician like Romney says something about the 47% who don't pay taxes.
Autonomous collective requires land and the ability to pay taxes for said land. Its extremely difficult to legally do sustenance farming in many countries due to this. Also, after hippies started their communes, many states passed laws restricting certain numbers of unrelated people from living on the same property. Capitalism depends on our inability to freely grow our own food and provide for our own basic needs- it's not an accident that its hard to do this legally under a capitalist state. I know people struggling to start their communes. It's purposefully way harder than it needs to be due to taxes, laws, etc.
You know, we laugh at anarchism today, most do without even understanding it, but this scene shows us that the monarchies are goofier and more absurd... and we stuck with that shit for millennia.
@@garbagetrash2938this is why I always laugh at anarcho-capitalists. When you ask them how they propose their ideal society be structured, their response is usually feudalistic, with CEOs instead of kings
The thing about kings is, sometimes you'd get lucky and have a really good one. And as a king, a supreme ruler not dependent on elections, he'd have near-absolute power and be able to do a lot of decent things. And then society would prosper and remain happy and stable for quite some time. But with CEOs, magnates and hedge fund billionaires, you never really get a good one, because there aren't any. Oh, maybe once in a while there's a sort of neutral one who tries to do cool things and sometimes succeeds, like Elon Musk or Steve Jobs. But mostly there's just an endless succession of bland, beady-eyed creeps--venal, arrogant, conscienceless, greedy, and megalomaniacal, and in charge of SO much power it's terrifying. I'd almost rather take my luck with a royal family, especially in this modern era when they are no longer able to lop off peoples' heads at will, AND a little nervous that we might lop off theirs.
Hilariously enough, this situation is rather common in the Medieval era. Though, mostly a jab at Hippie communes in the 1960's and 70's. At least the medieval commune being self-governed than a popular consensus of feudal overlord. Not to mention the lack of national identity, which this scene showed the villager's clueless about Britons, let alone Arthur. And Terry Jones is a medieval historian, who actually covered Peasant political and justice administration through the democratic council.
a better ending to the game of thrones: a bunch of peasants overthrow Cersei and install an anarcho-syndicalist commune in kings landing, where the standard of living improves for the small folk before Daenerys arrives to be crowned queen, Daenerys is unable to take the city because the peasants will stand for no rulers(they stormed the dragon pit and killed Rhaegal), so Daenerys burns kings landing in retaliation for their rejection of monarchism to protect her birthright as the queen of the seven kingdoms. thematically this would have made sense, Daenerys proclaims herself a "liberator" and breaker of chains, but when confronted with an ideology that threatens her birthright and privilege, she reveals to the world and the audience who she was all along, a monarchist wearing a hollow facade of liberation but rejecting actual liberation ideology when it threatens her quest for power that she feels entitled to as a white Targaryen woman.
Let me just celebrate this sketch by nerding out a little to quote a favourite and inspired passage from Rudolf Rocker's classic *Anarcho*-*Syndicalism* : *Theory* *and* *Practice* : "Anarchism recognizes only the relative significance of ideas, institutions, and social forms. It is, therefore, not a fixed, self-enclosed social system, but rather a definite trend in the historic development of mankind, which in contrast with the intellectual guardianship of all clerical and governmental institutions, strives for the free unhindered unfolding of all the individual and social forces in life. Even freedom is only a relative, and not an absolute concept, since it tends constantly to become broader and to affect wider circles in more manifold ways. For the Anarchist, freedom is not an abstract philosophical concept, but the vital concrete possibility for every human being to bring to full development all the powers, capacities, and talents with with nature has endowed him, and turn them to social account. The less this natural development of man is influenced by ecclesiastical or political guardianship, the more efficient and harmonious will human personality become, the more will it become the measure of the intellectual culture of the society in which it has grown." (p. 31)

Simön Faur if you are the modern day equivalent of a peasant, you often don’t have that choice. When you’re extremely poor, you don’t have the option to stop working to find a new job.
Simön Faur I also think voting for your boss is a misnomer, because if someone is your boss, they have power over you due to the fact that they own the business itself. @@talkeetnatattoos Well the conclusion is the right one. So best thing that can happen: being entertained and educated.

Gotta say, I find it interesting how many people are like "you know, these leftists sure are right about a lot of things", but refuse to identify with or adapt the underlying philosophy or ideological tendencies. i wish they'll do too... but they mostly don't leave their basement
When I watched this as a kid I had no idea what this scene meant but now I think this is one of my favorite Monty Python scenes

@@deviantsemicolon618 why not have a workers unionism with a bottom up power structure instead of an inherently top down dictatorship?

At least the medieval commune being self-governed than a popular consensus of feudal overlord. Not to mention the lack of national identity, which this scene showed the villager's clueless about Britons, let alone Arthur.

a better ending to the game of thrones: a bunch of peasants overthrow Cersei and install an anarcho-syndicalist commune in kings landing, where the standard of living improves for the small folk before Daenerys arrives to be crowned queen, Daenerys is unable to take the city because the peasants will stand for no rulers(they stormed the dragon pit and killed Rhaegal), so Daenerys burns kings landing in retaliation for their rejection of monarchism to protect her birthright as the queen of the seven kingdoms.
thematically this would have made sense, Daenerys proclaims herself a "liberator" and breaker of chains, but when confronted with an ideology that threatens her birthright and privilege, she reveals to the world and the audience who she was all along, a monarchist wearing a hollow facade of liberation but rejecting actual liberation ideology when it threatens her quest for power that she feels entitled to as a white Targaryen woman.
The less this natural development of man is influenced by ecclesiastical or political guardianship, the more efficient and harmonious will human personality become, the more will it become the measure of the intellectual culture of the society in which it has grown."
