I wouldn't be able to handle this Pharaoh hound stray that I found when she was a puppy if I lived anywhere else other than the 20 acres that I live on the big island. She has boundless energy and she runs like the wind. And like you say the prey drive on these dogs is off the charts she's a great bird hunting dog. She tracks hogs up here too but she's has a healthy fear of these wild boars in these mountains

I live in an apartment but let Malik run free in fenced yards 3-4 times a week because he NEEDS to run :) what a luxury to have 20 acres!!! Yeah, their prey drive is not to underestimate!

Mine is 1.5yrs old and he calmed down a lot.
The biggest problem we have is his pulling and barking when we leave him alone.

Yes, i feel like Malik has started to calm down a lot, he is not pulling that much but he is barks a lot when excited haha! When he is alone he sleeps but his barking gets crazy sometimes outside! ;)

What are your favorite ways to mentally stimulate him? I practice training (though he doesn’t like to do it) and I get him dog puzzles and take him out to socialize

Hi!! I find that nose work in different forms makes Malik tired! It could be hiding treats around the apartment that he can go find or hiding it in the inner yard. 3-4 times and he is super tired - fast and easy! :)

Hey me again. Have my baby for about 6 days now, he’s absolutely bat shit insane LOL very head strong but already making progress with sit and go in crate ( with food of course). Was just wondering, did Malik give you a hard time with the crate? My puppy will bark as if he’s getting murdered and there’s no letting him “bark it out” as he will go till eternity. Also he’s so high energy he cannot settle he’s insane lol, will it subside in a couple months? Thx for the help

Hi!! Oh I love the updates! We used a puppy pen for Malik instead of a crate - but they work in the same way. Yes, we had the same problem, he cried his eyes out in there and would not settle. What we did was following - had him on a leach inside the house and then only put him in the pen when he was really tired. Then we took out all the toys from the puppy pen so he didn't get excited in there. We had the puppy pen next to our sofa, so once we put him in there we where close to him but ignored him completely. When he was quiet we threw him a treat 3-4 times and said 'go sleep' then he cried for a bit but then fell a sleep. It was hard but eventually it worked. Now he settles fine on his bed or in the sofa, but it took til about 6-7 months for him to learn to settle on command. Hope this helps!! Let me know how you are doing!

My friend if you want a dog because you fell yourself alone in your house well better a Chihuahua...the primitive dogs need a lot of movement and activity they are super bored in the apartment... Maybe you made a big mistake choosing this breed. People don't understand till now ...that cannot have a breed only because they like it.
