I never new of this commemoration. If I did I'd have moved Heaven & Earth to be there. This was glorious and emotionally moving. Thanx to all those who worked to put it on.
The look on the faces of the children! Reminds me of the amazement on my own 13 year old face 50 years ago. I hope it inspires a new generation to see what can be accomplished when we work together!
I was there a year ago today (7/20/2019) to experience this once in a lifetime celebration. If you are a space nut or especially an Apollo program fan, this was like heaven on Earth. These 20 minutes were of the greatest of 2019 as I look back from a COVID filled world. The sound, video projection, editing, lighting, the whole nine yards was set to perfection. You were glued to the experience and I heard so many people watched it twice. Thank you Smithsonian and all teams for putting this together. Heck, I am sure even Neil was looking down at this and smiling. I hope we return to the moon soon. God Speed! -Max
As beautiful as this multimedia show is - this comment field on youtube is equally wonderful. Instead of snarky comments - people from around the world happily sharing the joy and awe with this demonstration of humanity and science and exploration in its finest moments. I thank posters for this. Demonstrating that we can still gather and enjoy things together.
I keep coming back to this video. Each time it brings tears to my eyes of pure happiness. The marvel and the majesty. Such a beautiful presentation. Thank very much, that was one of the greatest shows we’ve ever seen.
Great production. Beautiful.....Of the over 400,000 people that worked on this project, my Dad was one of them. Would tell me about the going on in "Clean Room" at Grumman where they worked on the LEM or later LM.
Thank you for sharing this. What I found most interesting was the expressions of awe and wonder on the faces of all the people who were obviously not yet born in 1969. I wish I could have been there, but I remember being at the Air & Space Museum for the 10th anniversary, seeing the Apollo 11 astronauts and the first Shuttle crew at a ceremony outside the museum, then watching the landing and moonwalk inside on monitors while eating astronaut ice cream. It was a day I’ll never forget. Now I have to go looking for the photos I took that day!
I was 2 1/2 in July, 1969. I have a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes from watching this. Words can't describe how incredible that achievement was. Truly a remarkable celebration.
The crowd in Washington were treated to an absolutely stunning spectacle. Amazing to see 50 years later all those people of all ages being as hypnotized, mesmerized and sometimes moved to tears as I was back then in 1969 at age 9 and now as well as I am 59. May the United States of America be Eternally Blessed by the Hand of Divine Power for this mind boggling achievement. The greatest of all times. Thank you infinitely the Smithsonian NASM.. Wish I had been there in DC a few weeks ago. I am in tears once again ... Glory to Neil Alden Armstrong, Edwin "Buzz" Eugene Aldrin and Michael C. Collins forever.
As someone who researched the history of the American space program in graduate school, spending hours and hours at the NASA History Office, the Air & Space Museum Library, and Library of Congress going through seemingly endless boxes of papers, memos, photos, and so on, there is little I have seen about the Apollo program. Yet, watching this video, the sense of awe that I had watching the Apollo launches as child came hurtling back to me. This was truly an amazing show. The audience of 1/2 million watched as if it were happening live all over again.
I am an aerospace engineer and I watched three Apollo launches as a kid, the earth shook at the launch site. Yet there are those that still believe the moon landings were faked.
Beautiful, outstanding, stunning, phenomenal presentation. A fitting homage to the Apollo moon landings. Happy 50 years of the historic moon landing. May you rest in the stars, Neil Armstrong. And may we return to the moon one day.
Teared up. Incredible moment captured for the next generation and more generations to come. What an amazing recreation. So awesome! Thanks to all the people who made the real Apollo Missions happen. Godspeed!
Beautiful and awe-inspiring. Hurry up America. Time to get back to the moon and do more great things. This is why the National Air and Space Museum is my favorite museum!
Breathtaking. Simply breathtaking. Thank you Smithsonian. This is how you commemorate the 50th anniversary of one of our great accomplishments. My daughter and I are looking forward to Artemus in 2024 and we can't wait to see what the next 50 years have in store!
My Dad would tell me stories about going to the Vehicle Assembly Building where they were putting the Saturn V rocket together for the trip to the moon.
And here I am with tears on my cheek...what an Incredible show...I hope i'll be alive when they'll go back to the moon or mars, so I can see it with my own eyes
Extremely moving how they captured the crowd reaction and that amazing presentation together !! For all those who couldn't experience it in person we say thankyou !!
It brings tears to my eyes to see Americans smiling, cheering, inspired and proud. We must remember that we can do great things together, whether on the ground for everyday life or for lofty ambitions.
Wonderful to see the same emotion in the faces of 2019 Americans, as we who witnessed it a half a century ago.The technological and ideological race with the Soviets quickly became so much more to we who were children at the time. To many, the astronauts became our heroes, role models. And in our minds, we were in the spacecraft, ready for launch......
This is by far, one of the best videos I have ever seen on UA-cam. I was recently home from Viet Nam when the moon landing occurred, and seeing it again 50 years later, was just as inspiring as it was the first time. In spite of how divided our country is today, I am still proud to be an American, and we are still the greatest nation on earth. I would also like to thank Jeff Beal for his beautiful score. Outstanding!
This is by far the best video on UA-cam! Kudos to those who put their hard work to create this amazing spectacle. God bless America. Ad Astra Per Aspera!
What is more beautiful is the crowd who attended, the look of amazement and wonder on their faces as they celebrate one of mankinds greatest achievements. This is what America should have always maintained, the veneration of scientific exploration and the conquest of the unknown.
Well, that was just awe-inspiring to watch. I can't imagine what that must have been like to be there in Washington Mall to see that!? Thank you so much for posting this for me to watch on my Christmas Eve, it made it perfect. I always get a little sentimental on Christmas Eve, not because of Apollo 11, but Apollo 8 and my memories connected to that special night. Long story which I'll spare UA-cam of. But it was an awesome event and time full of family loved ones, all huddled around our old Sylvania console TV, for a 10 year old kid to behold. And watching this beautifully made video some 51 Christmas Eve's later, just put the icing on top of that 1968 cake!
May God bless all those women and men who one way or another participated and supported and hoped for the success of this wonderful adventure. I was 6 yo when Apollo 11 landed on the moon. It has been a source of inspiration for me, all my life. I got chills watching the expressions of joy in the faces of some in the crowd. Blessings from Mexico.
I hope all these people filming the event on their phones got even better video quality than this video here. Because if they didn't it means they all wasted the opportunity of a lifetime to just watch this amazing presentation and take it in with all their senses.
WOW.... What an Amazing Production. From take off to landing, Stunning. Such Clever use of location and a Visual Delight to watch. The setting was Perfect. Well done to all who worked on this, AMAZING.
I was born in 1990 and apollo 11 was the event i wish i was alive to see this is the closest my generations going to get it to seeing it live and full scale thank you very much it was very moving brought a tear to my eye
This video just barely captures how incredible it was to see in person. Thank you Dr. Stofan and the Smithsonian for putting on such a wonderful performance.
I am speechless what a great event. I was 4 years old then, I still have vivid memories of that night in Italy with my parents watching on TV something that was to change mankind history. I believed, like many, that was the beginning of a new era not the end. I feel terribly sorry to think that, as of today, 50 years after, we went, not only no further, but that we have even lost the capability to go to the moon. Human Progress is not a given, we must catch up and go back to the moon and further in space, I want see it in my lifetime and leave a better world to my daughter
Very very nice work. Extraordinary visualization and a well edited story. The quick shot of that one gal, hand to mouth in nervous anticipation and the shot of the kid echoing one of the "GOs" are great in that you caught them and used them.
I was there (last summer, not in ‘69) and it was a breathtaking day, start to finish. Even if it was a million degrees. So much joy and hope and love in the crowd on the Mall that day This presentation was beautiful, thank you for capturing it so well 🥰
It was the hottest night of the year - even for the 10pm show, well after dark, it was still 93°F (34°C) and humid. And yet, there were more people out than for the Independence Day celebration just a couple weeks earlier. A once in a lifetime show.
Marty Fox 😆 we were all melting that day but it was worth it, wasn’t it? Amazing to go to all the tents during the day and learn from all the NASA folks who’d come out, and then this presentation... I watched it three times before I went home :)
I was 12 years old watching this on a small black and white TV in a relative's apartment in the Bronx NYC. I did not get to see color footage of the launch and landing until i was well into my adult years. This still gives me goose bumps.
While I was watching this spectacular show, I was wondering what does a country needs to be great and reach amazing achievements, and the answer is simple: just to want it to and doing it. Congratulations to the US people for that.
Fantastic, thrilling piece of work. The only thing missing, and it was a big omission, in my opinion, was images of those brave astronauts who gave their lives to further the dream of exploration: Gemini: Elliot See and Charlie Bassett; Apollo 1: Virgil "Gus" Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee; Space Shuttle Challenger: Gregory Jarvis , Christa McAuliffe, Ronald McNair, Ellison Onizuka, Judith Resnik, Michael J. Smith, and Dick Scobee; Space Shuttle Columbia: Rick D. Husband, William C. McCool, Michael P. Anderson, David M. Brown, Kalpana Chawla, Laurel Clark, and Ilan Ramon.
I just stumbled across this magnificent video. How I wish I had been in Washington that night. I was 10 on July 20,1969 when Eagle landed at 4:17 P.M. EDT. One of the best memories of my childhood.
This is so beautiful. I'm not American, but I feel so proud because this is a huge leap for us all, mankind. May one day we advance forward into further space exploration.
OMG I am just amazed and in tears by this truly incredible production! Who came up with the most absolutely perfect backdrop for Apollo Saturn V of the Washington Monument. Even after 50 years, Apollo never fails to impress! I always get so emotional at the launch for so many reasons. Thank you Smithsonian. I am so so amazed and I will be watching this again and again. I am in shock. 😁😁
OH MY GOODNESS!!! That was absolutely wonderful, I wish I could have been there amongst others to whom this meant something. The history of NASA has been a major inspiration in my life and completely changed the course of it. I wish I could share my appreciation and love of NASA with others who understand, this would have been a great event for doing exactly that. Beautifully done!!!
it is so sad, that a lot of ppl are looking at this marvel through a 5 inch screen. put it down and look at this one in a life time show with your eyes. just maddening...
I was there for this. This video utterly fails to convey how DEAD SILENT everything was waiting for the lander to hit the surface of the moon. Tens of thousands, perhaps a hundred thousand people, and it was absolutely SILENT. ....then it landed, you heard "Tranquility Base here..." and despite the fact that there were no surprises in this story, the crowd went absolutely FUCKING WILD. I'm typing this five years after the fact and my eyes are watering. It was THAT GOOD.

Wow! The only vertical video worth watching!
That was beautiful. I was glad to see all those young people being amazed and moved.Thank you Smithsonian!
The look on the faces of the children! Reminds me of the amazement on my own 13 year old face 50 years ago. I hope it inspires a new generation to see what can be accomplished when we work together!
Moved to take their phones out like idiots. Don't they realize it will be on youtube anyway?
Thanks so much. I cried, AGAIN. - Memories of a lifetime!
"Beautiful" is exactly the right description!
@@cedarshoals529 real, im definitely inspired though

I keep coming back to this video. Each time it brings tears to my eyes of pure happiness. The marvel and the majesty. Such a beautiful presentation. Thank very much, that was one of the greatest shows we’ve ever seen.
So incredibly well done that I hope it gets nominated for a short movie Oscar.

Ok we are all impressed with your autobiography haha. Enough
Beautiful, outstanding, stunning, phenomenal presentation. A fitting homage to the Apollo moon landings. Happy 50 years of the historic moon landing. May you rest in the stars, Neil Armstrong. And may we return to the moon one day.
I saw this in person. While it was much better in person, this video did a good job of grasping it. Well done, and thank you for sharing this video!
Nice
I was there too, and I even filmed the whole show myself... but man, I'm jealous that they got the raw audio feed :P
13:20 Reaction of this little girl just made ma cry :(
In moments like this I belive in mankind
Teared up. Incredible moment captured for the next generation and more generations to come. What an amazing recreation. So awesome! Thanks to all the people who made the real Apollo Missions happen.

The most moving thing I've seen in a long time.
Ever.

such a stunning tribute to Apollo 11

AMAZING PRESENTATION! Brought tears to this space-geek's eyes. Amazing emotion captured!
My Dad would tell me stories about going to the Vehicle Assembly Building where they were putting the Saturn V rocket together for the trip to the moon.
This is incredible! Happy moon day!
Amazing! Just wish I could have been there in person to watch with 500000 other fellow Americans.
What a wonderful show. My jaw was on the floor the entire time. Thank you for this.
I especially love the musical score. Great work.
Would love more details about the music!
It’s by Jeff Beal, who just released the soundtrack. Great composer!
This was spectacular! Loved seeing the young adults and kids watching and awed by this. I remember sitting and watching this live.
Great to see all those people awestruck at what happened 50 years ago, very moving thank you
I was there. It was stunning to watch and be a part of that moment.
Anyone else got the chills and cried?
Every single time.
Awesome. It must be a great experience to watch the show on the National Mall.
It brings tears to my eyes to see Americans smiling, cheering, inspired and proud. We must remember that we can do great things together, whether on the ground for everyday life or for lofty ambitions.
next to actually being there for the launch this is amazing! Whoever came up with the idea for this is a genius. Extremely well done!

This was a superbly assembled production. I loved seeing it in person. I wasn't going to miss it.
A crowning moment in humanity. Hope this is seen by many more.
Should be marked to never be removed from UA-cam's video archives.

America's proudest moments
Nicely done! Proud to be an American!

Wow, just wow. I live in Canada, & I thank the lucky stars that our neighbor to the south is the good old USA, the GREATEST country on earth !!!
This was an amazing production and an excellent video. I couldn't stay for the live show so I'm grateful I got to watch this! Thank you!

I was there on the National Mall watching this, what a TRULY AWESOME experience, watching the video gives me goosebumps.
Even after 50 years this launch still brings people together and their faces say it all
Wow...it's wonderful to see how science has managed to bring together so many people again!
I'm almost crying dudes! It was absololutly awesome!

This is SOOO cool! Absolutely BEAUTIFUL!
ESPECTACULAR !!! GRANDIOSO !!! Un excelente homenaje a una era sin igual !!!
This was a masterpiece.
I hope they do this again. It was great.
it is so sad, that a lot of ppl are looking at this marvel through a 5 inch screen. put it down and look at this one in a life time show with your eyes. just maddening...
Thank you Smithsonian! Brought back wonderful memories!
I cried through the whole video
I was there for this. This video utterly fails to convey how DEAD SILENT everything was waiting for the lander to hit the surface of the moon. Tens of thousands, perhaps a hundred thousand people, and it was absolutely SILENT.

OMG I watched every bit of that mission live on TV when it really happened. God bless America!
Absolutely stunning. Well done America!
Awesome!.. I saw Buzz Aldrin speak for an hour here in NZ in 2010 about his experiences... RIP Neil Armstrong and Michael Collins.. thanks from NZ 👍🇳🇿
Super freaking cool beautiful great job
Where i can find the soundtrack only? Awesone music
Wish I was their in washington to see the whole show it must have been breath taking
Makes me cry every single time. ❤
Great nation!
What a fantastic show and to be there in person to experience it as if watching the moon landing for the first time must have been very special.
It must also have been a wonderful experience for the younger generation who didn't see the moon landing the first time around, to be able to feel as those who saw it back then did watching the launch.
I remember when i was younger, watching the space shuttle launches and remembering how i felt back then.
To see the human race being able to achieve such wonderful things is something special.
I hope in the not so distant future we get to experience this again with either more moon landings or those planned for mars which would be another great feat for us.
The only video that worth watching for
Beautiful
Outstanding.
Now that was beautiful.
Amazing men inside Apollo, and in mission control! Sadly I only had one year and 11 months, and didn’t remember that day!
