Halo Infinite's needler is awesome and not too many weapons have been in every single Halo game. As much as I love the AR in Infinite, I still cannot ever forget how much I love the CE version. It’s just got the right sound, the right punch, and 60 rounds per magazine to boot. I have always preferred that version of the gun. Dual Wielding, in the way it was implemented, I personally think is what messed up the AR, the Plasma Rifle, and so many others’ balance within the sandbox.
My favourite is the Halo 3 MA5C. Not because it is mechanically the best or most visually impressive in the series, but because I have killed more people with that weapon than any other gun in any other video game ever.
The chapter titles in the video are amazing. Halo content that uses them often only use the topic they are talking about or just rip random ones with a direct connection to the topic (like "I would have been your daddy..." when talking about AOTCR). But here you actually use some original titles (as far as I can tell) to introduce the new iterations, and when you do use ones from the games its in interesting ways not directly related to the moment they appear in game that make me smile instead of roll my eyes at a cheap "detail" that is so commonly done. In summary, your use of chapter titles actually evokes and references the style and feel they brought to the campaigns instead of cheaply throwing them in for brownie points. I absolutely love it.
Evolution of Halo multiplayer in general would be fun to watch. I imagine it would take a lot longer to cover than a weapon, but it seems like a fun research project for you, and a greatly entertaining Halo video that no one that I’ve seen has really done before. Lots of tribute videos, lots of focused videos for each game in the franchise or other specifics about halo, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone layout exactly how multiplayer got to where it is today from back in the day. If anyone would do that topic justice, I feel like it’d be you.
I really like Infinites AR. There is a skill in feathering the trigger and fighting against the recoil to maximize the weapons range and minimize its TTK. However if the weapon really is too easy to use, I would suggest actually exacerbating the vertical recoil and/or bloom to make it that much harder at range, but still allowing for a skilled rifleman to make lethal use of it if they know how to control it.
@@kapthas59 That's a weird mindset. "This other gun is also overtuned, so this one is fine" no, they're both overtuned. So tune the two problem areas, instead of the rest of the sandbox. The "weaker" guns in the sandbox (of which there are plenty, including the Commando as you brought up) would've actually been fine had the AR and BR not been some of the easiest, most powerful and least skillful iterations of themselves in Infinite.
@@rickygforce4217 not a weird one, I just like buffs over nerfs. So essentially trading easy of use for more versatility.
@@kapthas59 that would just create a sandbox of sweaty, SUPER easy to use guns like H5. It would become a mess with no breathing room. Definitely the AR and BR need to be tuned down to give the sandbox breathing room

@@SJgolf891 I wish they could just add the Halo 3 ODST assault rifle sound to the original Halo 3 on MCC. Just sounds a bit more beefy, but it does wonders
My Halo Assault rifle ranking, based on mechanical strength and how it works in the sandbox: 1. Infinite: it’s the best parts of H3 and Reach, with all of the strengths of being the social gun, reliable but fair 2. Combat Evolved: It’s the best weapon for anything, and it’s okay that it’s overpowered, since there isn’t really a competitive weapon, so it’s both a comp and social gun 3. Halo 4/Halo 5: these ARs are just meant for killing, and they don’t fulfill a social purpose, since they’re really good for no real reason. They prolly my favs, but they don’t fulfill the social utility gun 4. Reach: Just a better H3 AR, does the social utility training gun better. 5. Halo 3: It’s not a bad gun, and is extremely underrated, but lacks in every department. People drop this thing first chance they get, but it is okay.
The reason why the Reach and Infinite rifles looks so different from the more classic designs is that you are dealing with the preferred equipment of the UNSC Army Troopers, not the Marines. The Marines prefer the classic rifle, BR, Hornet, etc. whilst the Army Troopers prefer the augmented rifle, DMR, Wasp, etc.
My personal favorite is the Infinite AR, maybe because this is because Infinite was my serious return to Halo after taking a destiny/warframe break; maybe because I personally find it compliments my Halo 4 reminiscent play style for Infinite; maybe because it’s easy to use and I’m just bad at PvP multiplayers, with me barely able to consistently get 10+ kill games. Either way, I find it really fun and a good stepping stone for a return to consistently playing Halo
5:00 "halo 3's ar trains people to use the golden triangle and is great in social slayer (auto starts in mcc)" everyone on twitter: "ThE h3 Ar SuCkS, I cAn'T gEt KiLlS wItH iT, h3 Is A oNe GuN gAmE"
Keep in mind, the H3 AR is pretty inconsistent across the board, so some's experiences with it won't line up with others'. For me, in Aus playing on 100-200ms ping frequently, the gun isn't good enough to even uphold the "golden triangle" with melees or nades, as the thing keeps shooting blanks constantly
I have to say the classic CE Assault Rifle is my favourite. Maybe because of the nostalgia or maybe because of the ridiculous 60 round mag. Whatever the case it just happens to be my top choice when talking about the Halo's ARs.
Favorite version would have to be H4's but H3's as a close second. Just really love the sleek futuristic look of that first AR model and I actually really liked where it was held in H3 and even its sound in that game. In H4 I liked the fact it felt powerful and like a legitimate weapon you could compete with at close range. It'd be fun to use a weapon that functions like the original AR though. Maybe they could bring back the SAW from 4/5 and rework it to accomplish this?
I wish we could see a modern version of the og assault rifle. I never liked reach’s redesigns of the ar or the banshee, and I wish they’d use the og models as inspiration instead of the reach models. But i think the og ar is basically the SAW
I have two favorites. 1. CE Assault Rifle due to it's high cap magazine and it's very effective against grunts, jackals, and large swarms of flood infection forms. 2. Halo Infinite Assault Rifle because of everything listed in the video. I ALMOST prefer the longshot variant, I simply wish that it not only had more ammo, but I also would like the magazine capacity to be just a bit higher. For example: Normal: 42-46 rounds Longshot: 32-36 rounds
Let’s all be honest here, we all tried killing brutes with the MA5C from 3 and ODST but even mag dumping doesn’t do jack, especially with the limited ammo of ODST
My favorite assault rifle is probably the Halo Infinite version, with a faster rate of fire than the Halo 5 AR and a slightly bigger mag size, and brings the nostalgia of Halo Reach!
The M4 A1 is probably one of my favorite guns, so while I’m not a fan of bullpup personally I always have to make an exception for this beautiful beast of a gun

I love the revival. My favorite is the infinite just due to the fact that it takes what reach did and enhances the presentation. The next one should be on the plasma archetype as a whole the weapons that representatives of that. Or the battle rifle, or the magnum including the sidekick but later down the road, after the new magnum video, do the shotgun weapon when the classic is returned to infinite. Or the needler, or every brute weapon throughout the years.
I think you presented this one much better than the first time you covered this weapon. In that video, you sounded very hostile about the direction Halo 4 and especially Halo 5 were taking the Assault Rifle, which made it kinda seem like you didn't want the weapon to be good. You sound much more accepting this time around, which definitely makes it easier to hear you out. Instead of coming across as "I don't like that the gun is able to stand on its own", it sounds a lot more like "Yeah, the Assault Rifle is good, just maybe a little too good". You mentioned in a reply to a comment I made somewhat recently about how you aren't really a fan of the Infinite Assault Rifle's performance. If you don't mind me asking, do you feel that making the Assault Rifle the "everyman gun" takes away from its identity? Specifically in the context of Infinite's much more streamlined, function-oriented, and sometimes just plain weird sandbox?
Glad you appreciated the changes! I definitely wanted to correct the original video’s tone. On the topic of the Infinite AR-I definitely think it’s more harmful to the game to have the spawn weapon be super easy to use and get kills with on its own. It makes players a lot more aggressive and competitive right out of spawn and sort of turns AR matches into “fully auto BR starts”
What was ar's identity that infinite is taking away? Being complete trash? What does everyman gun means? Ar in infinite cannot compete with brs and any long range guns in the game at long range.
@@LateNightHalo well if spawning with weak weapons worked, br/dmr spawns would not have existed. You need to spawn powerful so you have a fighting chance but I do not mean you should spawn with sniper or rocket launcher. There are 3 tiers in this game and only tier 3 and 2 weapons on the map should give you an advantage. Weapons like br and mangler should a swap of power, giving up close range lethality for range or giving up easy of use for extreme close range lethality respectively. I am sorry if I sounded aggresive but it is just that I am sick of precison weapon domination, I just want a sandbox where everything has a solid use.
Kapthas59 I think there's a problem in that you're currently arguing in absolutes, completely putting aside potential for nuance and therefore, your argument isn't very strong. "if spawning with weak weapons worked, br/dmr spawns would not have existed" BRs and DMRs are universally agreed upon as being more difficult than the full-auto, spread-based ARs of the series. I didn't like them being as relatively powerful as they were (e.g. in H3), but currently, we're in the heading a similar (not exact, but similar) situation, just that the powerful gun dominating MM is easy as hell to use this time round. You can have a powerful AR that doesn't dominate pick-up weapons in situations it should be able to. In unranked you might as well just ignore every pick-up weapon and rock your base AR and/or a couple power weapons the whole game to do the best you possibly can. Does that not remind you of the predicament of past Halos, just with a different weapon? LNG doesn't necessarily want the gun to be weak asf, so you shouldn't be straw-manning him as if he is. You're sick of precision weapon domination, but you're assuming that we aren't heading into another meta, one that's far more brainless and spammy. We don't have to experience either extreme, but in order for us to acknowledge this, we have to stop dealing in extremes. A nerf can be small or slight, not a sledgehammer approach.
@@rickygforce4217 the reason ar is being more prelevant is that due to most maps being close to mid range, other weapons are not as good as they should be with some of it borderline trash. If you go btb instead of standard arena, you would see a lot more weapons are used. Even in arena, pickup weapons are more picked up here than in previous halos. I already talked about ar in other thread so I suggest you to look into that. If ar needs to change, I would say make the spread pattern into a regular non changing pattern instead of random, something LNG himself suggested. I would say buff other underperforming weapons first before touching good ones like ar, br and mangler.
I always felt the Reach Assault Rifle was a tad too underpowered and much preferred it in Halo 3. However, I really do love Halo 4's incarnation! I think Infinite's is close to perfect if they just tone down it's range slightly and remove the headshot multiplier for multiplayer :)
No please dont. Headshot multiplier is what made the gun good in both campaign and multiplayer. It adds a skill gap instead of mindless shooting. Please ar is finally a good weapon that rivals the br, plase dont ruin it.
@@kapthas59 No, you don't quite understand. A headshot multiplier with spread-based weapons doesn't increase, but rather, compresses the skill gap, since some people will hit crits that they don't deserve, and others will miss them when they shouldn't. That situation satisfies the very definition of a low skill gap. Try hitting only bodyshots with the 4/5/Infinite AR. It still kills pretty damn consistently. Hell, I've out-AR'd BR users hitting only bodyshots pretty often. The Infinite AR can still be useful without an unnecessary headshot multiplier. So, please don't be one of those people that goes "nooooo don't change this just because I'm being lured by the novelty of an AR that performs like this and will assert that it's balanced, regardless of how healthy it is for the game"
@@rickygforce4217 I will give you some stats. Ar's perfect ttk is 1.25s, with 15 bullets, 3 to the head. Its body is 1.65s, with 20 bullets. Br's perfect is 1.55s, 12shots, 1 to the head. You have your own idea of how the spread for ar works but that is not true. Spread here is designed to make you miss even bodyshots. This is also true for sidekick too. At close range, the spread does not matter because your target is big anyway. At mid range, you need proper burst firing discipline to come out at victorious in an ar battle, which majority of players have no clue. That is why you think ar battles are rng, not skill. I will explain the burst firing here. You want to not over burstfire so your ttk remains fast and you do not want spread to get bigger than your enemy. After shield break, stop firing, reset spread and now you want to use it like br on the head, feather shots so it is as precise as possible. Try this in matchmaking with an open mind then we can continue our disscussion.
@@LateNightHalo then what exactly should ar role should be? Good for nothing but melee combo? I do not mean to be rude here but I strongly disagree on that. The purpose of ar to me should the close to mid counterpart of the br as they both are very versetile, easy to use weappns. Any ar kill at long range is an impressive feat and near impossible. Not only you have zero aim assist and bullet mag, you need to land 3 headshots to the head to finish the kill.

Sweet and consistent. This weapon taught me the basics and has carried me through hell and back, even when i wasn't the best player on the team, the mere fact i could throw some lead down range often meant the better players could get the finishing shots. Whenever i can, i will use the assautl rifle and take the fight to the enemy

I cant wait to see this series with some fresh new faces. What tales will be told about the weapons of old and how they match to the present
Keep up the amazing work Mr. untimelyhourofnight
(Latenight)
When you make these videos you should show off the weapons with the original offsets and fov.
No AR will top the CE version for me. I just love that gun, but the H3/H4 are my favorite appearance wise.
Same! I can't stand Reach/ Infinite's take on the assault rifle. It feels less like the punch gun we remember from the older days.
Until recently I'd never played a Halo game in my life, but I recently acquired the MCC and Halo Infinite on Steam. It's gonna be one hell of a ride.
I'd love to see the evolution of Doom's arsenal if you plan to branch out. This one's fantastic as usual.
8:51 "but before moving on to where destiny would take them"
I see what you did there
13:15 A M A S T E R C H I E F ?!
My favourite is the Halo 3 MA5C. Not because it is mechanically the best or most visually impressive in the series, but because I have killed more people with that weapon than any other gun in any other video game ever.
My favorite assault rifle mechanically is the ce one, but based on sound design? 3 and odst for sure. That's the one I grew up on. It's just too good
Glad to see you're taking another look at this series! Really looking forward to seeing where this goes moving forward!
I’m happy they stuck with you!!! I love halo’s chapter titles a lot and I felt it would help make the video feel more “halo-y”
Finally, this series is literally the best on UA-cam. I'm so happy!
THE EDITING OF THIS VIDEO IS AMAZING!!! YOU SHOULD GIVE YOUR EDITOR (I HEARD HES NEW!!!) A RAISE!!!!
Halo CE and Infinite are the only halos I held onto the Assault rifle
I really like Infinites AR. There is a skill in feathering the trigger and fighting against the recoil to maximize the weapons range and minimize its TTK.
However if the weapon really is too easy to use, I would suggest actually exacerbating the vertical recoil and/or bloom to make it that much harder at range, but still allowing for a skilled rifleman to make lethal use of it if they know how to control it.
Br is also easy to use so ar is fine. Buff commando because it is actually hard to use
I also like how the ar and br functions in this game and want other guns to be this powerful, easy to use, puts skill gap in other areas over pure gunplay. I like that commando is a skill weapon so instead of buffing it to dominate br and ar, I want it to be good at all range but not better than ar at close range and br at long range. So essentially trading easy of use for more versatility.
@@kapthas59 that would just create a sandbox of sweaty, SUPER easy to use guns like H5.
It would become a mess with no breathing room. Definitely the AR and BR need to be tuned down to give the sandbox breathing room
@@LateNightHalo i personally I felt halo 3 btb more sweaty than halo 5 and infinite ever was. I can understand both br and ar being brought down. But still I feel like very underpowered weapons like ravager and plasma pistol should be brought up first.
My favorite miniseries from you! I'm glad it's back
I always loved the halo 3 assault rifle. Especially the sound.
Haha I always hated the sound but to each their own!
@@SJgolf891 I wish they could just add the Halo 3 ODST assault rifle sound to the original Halo 3 on MCC. Just sounds a bit more beefy, but it does wonders
My Halo Assault rifle ranking, based on mechanical strength and how it works in the sandbox:
1. Infinite: it’s the best parts of H3 and Reach, with all of the strengths of being the social gun, reliable but fair
2. Combat Evolved: It’s the best weapon for anything, and it’s okay that it’s overpowered, since there isn’t really a competitive weapon, so it’s both a comp and social gun
3. Halo 4/Halo 5: these ARs are just meant for killing, and they don’t fulfill a social purpose, since they’re really good for no real reason. They prolly my favs, but they don’t fulfill the social utility gun
4. Reach: Just a better H3 AR, does the social utility training gun better.
5. Halo 3: It’s not a bad gun, and is extremely underrated, but lacks in every department. People drop this thing first chance they get, but it is okay.
Great to see the Evolution videos get a come-back like this! Fantastic work.
As for your next in-depth dive, why not take a look into grenades?
The CE AR is by far the best version, I feel the same way with the warthog. AND the Banshee lol
Glad to see the evolution series return! It's some of my favorite videos you do! Love the Halo Assault rifle! It's a classic and iconic weapon! ❤😁👍🏻
The more I watched the more I was worried that you'd left out the "fit for a king" gag. Thanks for staying true to your roots 👍
I really like the Infinite AR. It's probably my favorite in the series
Actually, the 36 round magazine is a reference to the number 343.
3x4x3=36
That would be cool if so but I was told it was done for balancing purposes to make the AR easier after the H5 beta. (It had 32 in the beta)
Nah that sounds way too "illuminati confirmed" for it to be the actual reason.
343 🤢
@@paperclip6377 ehh I kinda like the 343 games (especially infinite/H4) but it's your opinion.
I'm thoroughly pleased you made that king joke again, one of the reasons I subbed to this channel back when I first found the video
Not sure if pointed out yet 19:56 “The clastic 40 rounds.”
13:10 nice to see this joke back
The reason why the Reach and Infinite rifles looks so different from the more classic designs is that you are dealing with the preferred equipment of the UNSC Army Troopers, not the Marines.
I’m just happy the assault rifle is finally useful for a weapon that is portrayed as the “main character” of weapons. Given the respect it deserves
5:00
"halo 3's ar trains people to use the golden triangle and is great in social slayer (auto starts in mcc)"
everyone on twitter: "ThE h3 Ar SuCkS, I cAn'T gEt KiLlS wItH iT, h3 Is A oNe GuN gAmE"
Im assuming the twitter crowd is use to other fps games ar and primary weapons being op
Yes sir!!!!! I’m obsessed with these evolution videos. Can’t wait to see you cover the rest of the enemies and vehicles
the series that got me into this channel and halo yt as a whole makes its grand return!
Stan halo Infinite AR
The CE/CE A and Halo 4 versions are my favorites. The sound really sells it.
Great video! Cant wait until he looks at the Halo vehicles across the games
I have to say the classic CE Assault Rifle is my favourite. Maybe because of the nostalgia or maybe because of the ridiculous 60 round mag. Whatever the case it just happens to be my top choice when talking about the Halo's ARs.
Bro these videos are a piece of handcrafted digital art. Well done, 10/10
The Morita III is actually from Starship Troopers 3 and it came 7 years after Halo: Combat Evolved.
Thanks for the correction!!
Evolution of the SPNKR
Glad to see you updating one of my favorite series on the channel, keep up the good work!
make an hour long evolution of the master chief and include books and movies please !!!
Halo 3, 5, and infinite assault rifle are peak assault rifles period
An ‘Evolution of Halo’s energy shield’could be cool.
For example:
Normal: 42-46 rounds
Longshot: 32-36 rounds
I always thought that the assault rifle would be able to have a rocket launcher attachment
These were the videos that first brought me to this channel. And I love the new take on it!
The M4 A1 is probably one of my favorite guns, so while I’m not a fan of bullpup personally I always have to make an exception for this beautiful beast of a gun
I love these evolution videos cos there’s always little tips and tricks I’ve never heard about before, like the CE active camo thing
"Even though it doesn't make much sense canonically"
Pretty much summed up all of Halo 4 right there.
Wait what doesn't make sense in 4? I thought it followed up 3's story pretty well for the first game of a new studio.
@@REALMARCHINADER Dude goes to sleep and wakes up wearing a completely different set of armor, in a completely different looking ship, full of completely different looking weapons than when he went to sleep - and that's just the first minute of the game.
@@harbingerdawn nanomachines son.
in all seriousness the armor changing is pretty much just an artstyle change. It looks different but it's not canon breaking. Hell some changes between 1, 2, and 3 are a lot more drastic. But I bet you don't notice those.
@@harbingerdawn Also have you seen how little the FUD is? Try making a 20+ minute level out of half the ship.
@@REALMARCHINADER One of the few things that must necessarily have been the same between any of the other games for the sake of continuity is Chief's armor between 2 and 3, and except for slightly different hand armor it is the same. What else changed dramatically between the previous games that had no plausible in universe explanation?
@@kapthas59 I really don’t think we should be praising long-shot burst firing at a head with the AR… thats not what the ARs role should be
@@LateNightHalo then what exactly should ar role should be? Good for nothing but melee combo? I do not mean to be rude here but I strongly disagree on that. The purpose of ar to me should the close to mid counterpart of the br as they both are very versetile, easy to use weappns. Any ar kill at long range is an impressive feat and near impossible. Not only you have zero aim assist and bullet mag, you need to land 3 headshots to the head to finish the kill.
I love all variations of the assault rifles in halo and everything about it right down to detail
CE and H5's ARs will always be my favorites, love that classic design, and fun factor.
I love the halo Reach assault rifle. Probably because I played that game quite a bit growing up. I must’ve put around 1000 hours in the campaign and firefight alone lol
Ce assault rifle is my favorite. It also lets you return back to camo while fighting faster than all other weapons.
Fun fact on the Halo 1 Assault Rifle: After launch, many called attention to the parallels of the MA5B to the real life weapon the FN F2000. Bungie developers later confirmed they never heard of the weapon and the resemblance was purely coincidental.
That screen flashing in the h2a trailer actually hurt my eyes there. Other than that great vid, loved it! ♥️
I’m so glade your updating the series
even though i started during the reclaimer saga, the og ce ar has to be my favorite, with the roar and ammo count having a significant impact on memories of playing thru the campaign with my dad
Babe, wake up, the evolution series has returned
Halo 4 introduced me to halo, so i have a massive soft spot for the Assault rifle from that game. That and the fact my brother never let me use the sniper rifle.
A close second has to be Halo Reach.
The evolution series is what made me find your channel!
Machine Gun Turret Evolution!
I feel like this idea has potential since every Halo I remember has one even if it's not detachable.
