The acoustic drum sample is mixed to sound like a electric kit so it wasn’t really a good comparison

agreed. The acoustic kit sounded way too tight and had no dynamics in the sound. it was definitely a biased mix. also, they played two completely different styles and different songs. I'd love to hear a side by side of the EXACT same thing play by the same player in the same style with NO effects or alterations other than volume mixing.

As a drummer and the lead sound tech at my church, I pushed for an electronic kit just to be able to control dynamics better. I totally understand the “40%” quote. The consistency and easy setup/tear down, makes it great. It absolutely forces me to play differently, and is nowhere near as expressive, but the vision is more important than my selfish desires.

This was an excellent video that will help others, who, like me are in a smaller church, trying to bring it into the modern age without becoming a big theater type of church but more importantly, helping without breaking the bank.
I have been a drummer for a long time. And that has by default (because most people in our church aren't musicians of any type) become the worship directer, (without title or salary). I've been playing in front of people since the early 1980's, so I'm an old guy. When our church first started making the switch away from organ or piano and hymnal singing to a more band oriented type of worship, it was a struggle. At first I brought my small Gretsch jazz kit to the church but honestly, unless I used brushes, it was over powering for the space and for the congregation.
It was causing a lot of problems within the church about guitars, drums and noise that they bring with them. We bought a Roland TD-25 KV and replaced the acoustic kit with it. Not only did it remove the loudness problem, it removed anyone's excuse about the band as the problem and showed that it came down to personal preference of music as opposed to the new set-up being "NON-CHURCH" music. We even tend to play older hymnal type of songs except in a modern band style arrangements along with some of the contemporary songs.
The ditgital drums not only fixed the loudness but are responsible for the church now having a praise team band. That allows our church music and singing to be something that, when people that aren't believers or that have no church background visit, can relate to musically if nothing else at the start of their visit. We have to remember that first and foremost, we are to go into the whole whole and make believers of lost people. It's not about our wants, our preferences or our comforts. It's about being salt and light to the broken world around us. Music speaks all languages all at once. It's a door through which searching people can find a home and people that care about them.
Back to the digital drums. I have since bought two Roland kits for myself. One that stays set-up and one to play out with. They're basically Roland TD-25 KVX kits except they are fully custom. They both have 22" converted acoustic bass drums, 10" and 12" pads and are mounted GiIbralter racks. I use the same module for both because of the ease of use of the TD-25. I love them now that I'm used to them. I too at first hated the idea of digital drums. But, like guitars, you accept that each, whether acoustic or digital have their place. Do they have the millions of subtleties of real cymbals and drums? Not even close. But a Fender Stratocaster, a great guitar in itself, wouldn't make that great of a Flamenco style of guitar either.
I encourage anyone in a smaller church environment to give the electronic kits a try. Remember that it is important not to go bottom end or too cheap. Expect to pay at least as much if not a little more for digital drums to acoustic drums for similar level of practice, intermediate or professional levels of quality. Trust me on this, anything less will just make everyone mad. No one wants to play on toys.
I would be willing to help anyone with any questions or problems they have make the change over to digital drums. Let me know if I can help.

Had a very similar journey with the digital drums late last year. First laughed it off, then started researching and testing and was very surprised! We ended up buying an ATV set as well, but we paired it with the Pearl Mimic Pro. It has been amazing how much better sound quality we get without having to fool with mics, tuning, and the drum cage. Our drummers also love being out in the open air. Changed the game in terms of stage energy. Love the video!

AWESOME. I'm from Brazil and we actually use an Edrum. We converted an acoustic to E-drum using a Roland TD-25 brain module. The feeling is awesome 'cause it sounds all the ghost notes on the drums. With a good module and a lot of work, we solved the excessive noise on the stage. I can say that Front Church have been blessings us here in Brazil. Some of changes we are making on the local church comes from this channel.

I've been using a Roland TD-12 kit with various VSTs (mostly Toontrack) to record since 2009. The drum sounds you can get out of a setup like that are worlds better than what probably 99% of churches can achieve with their acoustic environment and drum setup. But, yeah, unfortunately the look of e-drums puts most people off so they stick with acoustic drums even when their venue isn't suited for it. It's great to see this church emphasizing sound quality and consistency over "the look".

Our church (about 300 members) uses Roland TD17kvx digital kit. We love it! I’ve played with a variety of drummers outside church on Roland kits and acoustics. As a guitar player playing along side a digital Kit it is way better. I’ve got tinnitus thanks to an acoustic ride cymbal in a small rehearsal space. Beware a drummer that sets up then puts in ear plugs before the first note is played! Lol! Goodbye volume wars! Goodbye drum aquarium! And don’t forget the cost. Digital will always get you way more for your money as well as the set up / tear down advantages.

Our church uses the ATV kit as well. LOVE IT. However, we didn't like the sounds of the ATV brain. So we paired our ATV kit with Pearl's Mimic Pro. The reason for this is that Pearl Mimic Pro uses sounds from SLATE DRUMS. Slate drums are the leader in drum programming and trigger sounds and drum replacement technology. They're nuts. So pairing the two together is a match made in heaven.

We use an e-kit at church for the sole reason that its easy to setup and breakdown. Its a KAT KT-4. The downside? No dynamics during the slower worship songs, which can disrupt the flow of worship. But other than that, does it's job pretty well.

    • @ScottGiorgini
      @ScottGiorgini 4 роки тому +3

I use an Alesis Strike Pro, which has some of the BEST SOUNDS of any e-kit I've heard (see expansion below), and it's mesh heads are velocity sensitive. So those soft strikes and hard strikes come right back in to play. Hello dynamics!!! ヅ
OK... about the sounds >> Like any other e-kit, the vast majority of the thousands of sounds in the control module are ones you've heard before (like the 808 drum machine, basic kits, cheesier sounding kits, etc.). But over the last few years, Alesis have made a concentrated effort to add high quality drum samples to the module. They've actually recorded some of today's most sought after kits and cymbals at The Power Station Studio in New England, and I can tell you from experience that these samples are absolutely superb! If you get a chance, go check out a kit.

Thank you for your work and the Videos.
If it’s possible for you and you want to improve your skills for those types of videos, i would appreciate it, when you work on your filming skills, especially the Interviews with two cameras. There is a 180 degree rule to dont cross the axis. So if the Person is Talking to you, you have to be with both cameras on one side of him and the person he is talking to and not cross the axis with one camera to the other side of the two persons. So the speaking person talks in both cameras in the same direction.
i hope you understand what i mean :)
all the best and blessings to you from a filmmaker from germany

Man, as someone who not only plays worship but writes and produces it, I've fallen in love with GOOD electric kits running through something like Superior Drummer 3 where the samples are just professionally mic'd and produced acoustic drums anyways. Maybe it's just the IT tech in me. We use an acoustic kit with a cage and mics for church, but then I use electric for my home studio.

28:35 I think electric kits can be just as good as acoustic kits, however, as a drummer the reliability, dynamic range, and overall tone and feel of acoustic kits is unmatched. Electric kits are great and amazing practice tools for the home and really small rooms, but the cheaper kits like the Roland TD-11 line, the Alesis crimson, and the Yamaha DTX562K, just sound cheesy at times in a live room environment. Me personally will only play acoustic drums live in front of a crowd not electric, but for my personal practice will happily play electric.

Luke Ramlet as a drummer and previous owner of 2 different e-kits, reliability can be an issue as well. I’ve had issues with double triggering, hitting cymbals that don’t trigger, cables going bad... I’d prefer an acoustic set any day. No need for power or amps. Cymbals always work, and there is no greater feeling than bringing your own snare that’s tuned to your “sound”.

Likewise, our drum kit at church is digital. reliability is definitely an issue. there's never a sunday the triggers worked like it did from last week. dynamics range especially on slower, intimate songs are so limited to the sound samples the module can produce. It lacks the finesse and the intricacy of your input to the triggers. Swelling cymbals sounds like a 16th note crashes. The overall feel and your touch as an individual drummer, are amiss. but the sounds our production team is able to achieve further outweighs all the cons. so we use the digital drum kit. definitely a love/hate for me. acoustic drum set any day, if I had a choice.

While some of the other tech tours have shown very technically impressive setups, this one feels more down to earth (or up to heaven? lol). They seem to have spent their money in pretty sensible ways (although their sound desk is criminally cheap compared to everything else!). The drum kit thing was interesting. Must admit the feel is the bigger issue than the sound for its purpose as it doesn't sound "bad" i just doesn't sound as natural, its the same as the Amp VS Modeler in the guitar world its probably the same situation the modeler is getting 80% there, the amps are temperamental depending on mic placement, tube/valve health , temperature etc.

Yep - the drummer & maybe one other person is the room could notice a difference. Ours is the same. Minor down side for drummer - big plus in other areas. So overall , as long as the drummer isn't losing it big time, the digital drums are a great idea.

@Kevin O'Connor I would say as a drummer I am far more picky than the average electric guitar player. I've searched long and hard to find the best acoustic gear possible to find the perfect cymbal, snare, or kit. I want to use what I find is the best and what I like to use, not what a worship leader finds. Now, there might be some consequences i.e mic bleed, drum shields, and the other issues with live drums, but if you find and use good and well-seasoned drummer they should be able to play the kit appropriately. So at times, drum issues can be because you're not working hard enough to find a good drummer who can play to the room.

We use a Roland TD 30 with a shell pack from drum-tec.
We don‘t have really much space in our worship area so an acoustic set would be way to loud and uncontrollable since we have many different drummers and most of them aren‘t used to play in small churches like ours.

The one dead giveaway with Electric Kits is insurmountable: digital consistency. Listen to that bass drum long enough and you can feel the natural inconsistencies of Acoustic drums compared to electric ones. That sort of "natural" feel can only be replicated by a trigger setup using trillions of samples.

Key word - DYNAMICS. If your electronic kit can't effectively build, wash, die off, resonate with cymbal tones, then it doesn't work the same. The dynamics shouldn't solely be coming from the sound team, it should be the feel of the drummer too. I do know however that they do make e-kits nowadays that come pretty close, but the price certainly reflects that as well. I'd love to hear a comparison of a strong buildup to a powerful worship song - Electronic vs acoustic.

We use a Yamaha DTX kit. I personally love them. They sound the same as a real kit and the sound engineer has total control over them. I've always played Yamaha DTX kits in music stores and never in real life. They sound really good, but I can't imagine myself with them on stage/live. Probably because of the kits that come on them.
Do you use the stock kit in them or do you MIDI the drums to Studio Drummer/EZDrummer for a "realer" sound?

    • @Suzyrn601
      @Suzyrn601 4 роки тому

@@tonylancer7367 We actually tweek the inner stock memories to get the sound that we want. I like a really boomy bass drum with a pop to it. ( A lot like Austin Davis kit with Kari Jobe) I have also tweeked the sound of the toms slightly and we worked on the snare sound for several hours before we got it like we wanted it. The DTX kit really does give you a lot of great sounds and ways to tweek it to your liking. I am a purist so I would really love to be playing real drums. The only thing I don't like about the DTX is the snare click. It doesn't sound as snappy as I would like but I haven't figured out a way of manipulating it yet.

Our worship service meets in our church's gym, which has all hard surfaces (tough acoustics) and needs to be taken down after every service. Although an acoustic drum kit is always my first choice, in this situation an electronic kit served the space better and gave us more control over our overall sound. I converted a cheap, used acoustic kit into an electronic kit using a TD-11 module connected to EZ Drummer 2, Jobeky cymbals, Remo Silentstroke heads, and Roland RT-30 triggers. A little more work, but way more affordable for a full-sized kit with more of an acoustic "feel" to it. It's served us well so far!

The ATV drums are nice but I prefer Roland, Alesis strike, pearl mimic drum module to the AD5 from ATV. It’s sounds are ok, a bit dry for my tastes. I love acoustic drums but can not have them in my apartment living situation, I don’t have the money / ability to afford a rehearsal space or have a car to get to the space. Hybrid kits are really the best of both worlds, adding samples to thicken a bass drum or snare, Toms or being able to play backing tracks and use samples from the album to make the live experience as close as possible to the record. Electronic kits don’t need tuning, or mic setups , easily control stage volume in smaller venues. Then recording the midi data along with the modules sounds to do post production work after can be very nice tool. Of coarse they are not a replacement for acoustic drums however soon the technology is going to be so good it will be just like guitar. Do you play electric or acoustic guitar. Do guitar players say oh you don’t play acoustic guitar you not really playing an instrument.

The biggest hurdle to an ekit isn't sound, it's getting a church to understand the importance of purchasing a good one and the good ones are several thousands of dollars. High end Roland kits will rival the price of the entire PA system for some churches. Modern e kits have come a long way though, plug them into software like superior drummer 3 and it's pretty indistinguishable from an acoustic kit (sound, not feel).
I was also able to tell the difference, but only because I've been familiar with the tech and messed with it for the past 13 years.

Thanks for creating these videos. Very interesting to see what and how other churches do things. Re E drums .... look at the big picture, if you are only getting 40% of the potential acoustic drum sound for whatever reason and you can achieve a higher level with E drums then you should use e drums. Having been a musician and sound tech for 34 years, personal preference is acoustic drums and tube amp for guitar. Properly mic'd and set up/eq'd there's no digital instrument I've come across yet that can match it. But the real key is in the set up. Many a sound tech don't have a musician's ear to bring out the sound in the FOH that the musician has created in his instrument

Played this kit for 8 months it’s not too bad for the price. But the drum heads are junk, I blew out kick drum batters multiple times live in service. The wiring harness wore out fast and had to be replaced. It had a decent “real feel” for and electric kit. I like the rim on the snare, and the module is interchangeable. You have to buy the actual good sounds for the module after spending a grand on the module itself. I consider the kit to be just ok. I would spend the extra on a Roland or a real kit with baffles personality.
