Nothing could overshadow news about a Kennedy back then... especially the last remaining brother who would be king. The moon thing quickly became a bore. John Lennon once said about them, "If you've seen one you've seen them all". Thank God we the people made sure Kennedy never became president.
50 years ago, Senator Edward Kennedy's car went off the bridge known as "Chappaquiddick ", his secretary, Mary Jo Kopeckne, drowned, he was accused of leaving the scene of the crime. 😐
One theory that holds plausibility is the one told recently by a former CIA agent. Ted was having an affair with another politician's wife. She was at that party. They wanted to be "discreet", so they went to the beach in his car. Mary Jo had a headache and, because it was too noisy in the house, slept in the back seat without telling anyone. Ted and his lover drove off the bridge but easily got back to shore. She, however, left her purse to be discovered by investigators. The lover went back to the house, but Ted went to Edgartown because they did not want to be discovered. The next day Ted was confronted about Mary Jo. It was either lie and make up a story about Mary Jo or tell the truth and be found out about this affair. Ted chose the cover-up...and it worked.
The purse found in the car belonged to Rosemary Keough, another of the "Boiler-Room Girls." All of the women at the party were under thirty, most of them well under; and none were married. All of the men were over thirty, most of them well over; and all but one were married. No wives were present. But the "MJ-asleep-in-the-backseat" theory still makes more sense than the "official" version.
