  • Cortot is famous for his interpretations of Chopin and rightly so, but he also recorded some great pieces from other composers, like this one. The recording includes some remarkable rubato and voicing. The rubato may seem a bit excessive to todays standards, but I do quite like it.
    Recorded February 5, 1923.

Omgg I love this interpretation tremendously, it opened me up to the great lyrical value of this piece. Honestly I was soo stunned with the mainstream way of playing this piece, that desperately hides the great sensitivity that really has.

Worlds apart in concept from the now almost universally standard Lisztian, driving Horowitz/Sofronitsky approach to this piece, Cortot emphasizes the lyrical, almost feminine, Chopinesque aspect of the work. A revelation.

It's a shame Cortot didn't record more Russian music. He was known to play Rachmaninoff but never recorded any... Thankfully we have this though.

Agreed, and I love how interesting the ''Russian crescendo'' (dim. when cresc. is written) is used. Besides, 'patetico' does not necessarily mean agitato, Horowitz always plays things his way and it works, but when others try this kind of dramatic and overly romantic approach, it is hard to listen to somtimes.
