Reggie Miller says Dražen Petrović is the best shooter ever, faster release than Steph Curry

  • NBA Hall of Famer Reggie Miller was known as a fierce trash talker to go along with his sensational shooting and scoring ability during a brilliant 18-year career. The 50-year-old Miller - who currently works as an analyst for the NBA on TNT - joined me on HuffPost Live to discuss LeBron James, the Golden State Warriors and the one player who had a quicker release than Stephen Curry. It might not be who you think either. It's Millers favourite player, the late great Dražen Petrović.

Petrovic was amazing player. Technically and tactically gifted, but his determination and desire to play and win were driving him! Legend! As i grew up with him, still playing in Cibona and later in Real Madrid, the legends about him were already present. The one that inspired me was that each morning, before going to school, he threw 300 free throws every day...Of course this was followed by more shots every day. Bulgaria still remembers Drazen!

I agree. He was this n that, good in all aspects of the game, talented, but what REALLY sets him aside from the rest, was his maniacal will to train and win. He really was a crazy dude, wanted to win even if the winner shoulkda get executed right after.
Too bad he left at one of his "up" periods, he would've grow so much in next two years.

Steve Kerr and MJ, both on the Bulls championship teams, have said how frustrating it was to guard Drazen. He wouldn't give up. No matter what happened to him. Kerr was an early three-pt and last minute shooter when 3 pointers werent big unless clutch. You cant tell me that Curry didnt benefit from having a Bulls championship player as his coach.

There is plenty of footage here on YT for those of you calling Draz a Great White Hope etc. Dude was the truth. And by the way, for those looking at just career stats, you have to throw away his time in Portland. He wasn't getting consistent minutes because he was playing behind Clyde Drexler.
When he did get in the games he showed flashes but his game flourished in New Jersey. Also in response to another poster, he wasn't a PG although he was very creative and an excellent passer. Kenny Anderson was the PG in NJ although he and Mookie Blaylock may have overlapped.
He had the quickest release I've ever seen as well so I agree with Reggie. But certainly Ray Allen and Andrew Toney are in the conversation. In terms of modern day players, the closest comp for him I can think of is actually Klay Thompson. Similar size, build, and skill set. Petro wasn't quite as tall, but has similar proportions.
In those days teams didn't shoot as many threes so of course he doesn't have as many in a season as the top guys now. But make no mistake, he was deadly in and he also shot 50 percent or close to it from the field in his last two seasons if I'm not mistaken. I don't have his stats right in front of me.
He was just entering his prime when he died tragically. But he gave every other SG in the league the business including Michael Jordan most nights. Plus, he could guard which is another similarity he has with Klay.
In today's NBA he would be a problem because he wasn't just a sharpshooter , but a guy who would punish smaller guys on the box. And he loved to beat guys off the bounce.
So I agree with Reggie and he should know. But I know too because I saw the man play.

Croatian Drazen was a godly shooter and a great scorer but to call him complete....hum no.

  • @juancruz-ne6jk

Reggie Miller, who was not only an intelligent player but had Larry as a coach, knows exactly what he is talking about. Because Dražen Petrović was special but not only in shooting. Yugoslav shooting mechanics have produced very great shooters both in the defunct Yugoslavia and in countries such as Lithuania and other countries in the Baltic area. Dražen was special because he wasn't just a shot, although obviously he had a wonderful shot of two and three. But shooters who if they had gone to the NBA or not would have had injury problems with that shooting mechanic. They would be among the best shooters in that league. Velimir Perasović, Predrag Danilović, Rimas Kurtinaitis, Arvydas Macijauskas, and without that shooting mechanics but the best Oscar Schmith Becerra and finally with a patented shot invented by Juan Carlos Navarro, the best Spanish basketball player of all time. The problem is that the NBA does not see European basketball and in the time of Dražen Petrović less. A shame some of them came to the NBA as old men and they were not even given a ball for having such closed-headed coaches. Today and with the shot of three being so important where would these players be.

And one of the best pure shooters ever, 3's or anywhere on the court, Reggie Miller's first player out of his mouth when asked who he would want to shoot a game-winning three would be Larry Bird. Greatest shooters of all time (Play-offs/clutch shots proven)
    Ray Allen
    Reggie Miller
    Larry Bird
    Michael Jordan
    Kobe Bryant
    Greatest shooters (regular season)
    Steph Curry

Petrovic was a pioneer and a legend to those who followed European basketball since the 80s or early 90s.Petrovic is largely the reason this flood of European players going to the NBA began.
Technically speaking, Petrovic was flawless. His basketball IQ was far greater than guys like Clyde Drexler, John Starks, Ron Harper, etc. His work ethic and will to win could be compared only to MJ. But he never got the chance to play with an NBA contender team.
Anyway, those who know what Drazen represents for European basketball consider him the best European player to ever play the game and even if other people have or will win more, Drazen is a legend just like MJ.
