Reggie Miller says Dražen Petrović is the best shooter ever, faster release than Steph Curry

- NBA Hall of Famer Reggie Miller was known as a fierce trash talker to go along with his sensational shooting and scoring ability during a brilliant 18-year career. The 50-year-old Miller - who currently works as an analyst for the NBA on TNT - joined me on HuffPost Live to discuss LeBron James, the Golden State Warriors and the one player who had a quicker release than Stephen Curry. It might not be who you think either. It's Millers favourite player, the late great Dražen Petrović.
only real basketball fans will know who Drazen is
And people from Ex-Yu
My ancestors are Croatian growing up was told Yugoslavian my great-grandfather came to America from Trieste Italy.
Ezra77 word I remember he mike soooo fucking pissed off a few times
For real he was amazing. Too bad he died too soon. I could imagine how is career would have went.

Petrovic was amazing player. Technically and tactically gifted, but his determination and desire to play and win were driving him! Legend! As i grew up with him, still playing in Cibona and later in Real Madrid, the legends about him were already present. The one that inspired me was that each morning, before going to school, he threw 300 free throws every day...Of course this was followed by more shots every day. Bulgaria still remembers Drazen!
Curry doing that now shoot every day like crazy..even send jersey from NBA Final 2015 to Petrovic museum in Croatia
I just stumbled on this video and decided to leave my comment to your post...Amazing fact is that Curry's father played with Drazen and Drazen's mother was babysitting Stephen during the games :)...Just year ago Stephen sent his signed jersey to Drazen's mother as a gift...it is hanging now in Drazen's museum in Croatia...
GSW Croatia i have seen it in the museum but it isn't from the finals.... finals jerseys dont have adidas logos and other things are missing ("the finals" on the back under the neck, ...) but still a cool gesture by steph
I agree. He was this n that, good in all aspects of the game, talented, but what REALLY sets him aside from the rest, was his maniacal will to train and win. He really was a crazy dude, wanted to win even if the winner shoulkda get executed right after.
Too bad he left at one of his "up" periods, he would've grow so much in next two years.
Life is flying by captain...

dell never played with drazen. the picture that you saw is from the 3 point contest. it was a one time deal. she held him while his father was shooting.
Without any discussion here, I just miss Drazen so much...

Drazen is top 5 shooters of all time
King Savage Would have been if he didn’t die so young
@King Savage? Who is ? lUkA dOnCiC
Steve Kerr and MJ, both on the Bulls championship teams, have said how frustrating it was to guard Drazen. He wouldn't give up. No matter what happened to him. Kerr was an early three-pt and last minute shooter when 3 pointers werent big unless clutch. You cant tell me that Curry didnt benefit from having a Bulls championship player as his coach.
I remember when European plsyers first came into the league. Sarunas and Drazen. They were the start of European basketball players coming into the NBA.
Trailblazers, indeed.
I remember an old story about Petrovic, it said he once wanted to know how many shots he would need to take to reach 100 threes. He took 104.
wow......i didn't know that....but it's true that he was not a man on the court. He was killing machine.
He took 112 points in a league game back in the 80's, he was always hungry proving himself, that made him aspire to go after one of the best.
Jack12today so has Gilbert arenas when he was playing nick young in a three point contest he only missed two shots so it’s really not that impressive many shooters in the league can do that

Netflix introduced me to Petro.
He definitely lit fools up back in the 90s.
Netflix? How?
There was a Petro documentary on Netflix.
He died in his home country - from a car accident - I believe.
Elias he actually died in Germany. After a qualifng game in Poland
Once Brothers from ESPN 30 for 30 was a nice documentary about his friendship with Vlade Divac.
You wish he lit anybody up. The only fool he lit up was you. I mean no one heard of this nobody so what are you saying?
The way y`all in USA feel about Kobe now, is how we in Europe felt about Dražen in `93.
In the gold medal game in the 1992 Olympics Croatia played the Dream Team guess who had the most points in that game it wasn't MJ it was Drazen I'm a knick fan what when we started turning on net games we saw how good he was and I started tuning in 2 net games just to see those perfect 3-pointers from the corner and anywhere on the court
And i must tell u smtin...we are the nation that counts 4 million people.........like the one of your 50
Petrovic the legend!
There is plenty of footage here on YT for those of you calling Draz a Great White Hope etc. Dude was the truth. And by the way, for those looking at just career stats, you have to throw away his time in Portland. He wasn't getting consistent minutes because he was playing behind Clyde Drexler.
When he did get in the games he showed flashes but his game flourished in New Jersey. Also in response to another poster, he wasn't a PG although he was very creative and an excellent passer. Kenny Anderson was the PG in NJ although he and Mookie Blaylock may have overlapped.
He had the quickest release I've ever seen as well so I agree with Reggie. But certainly Ray Allen and Andrew Toney are in the conversation. In terms of modern day players, the closest comp for him I can think of is actually Klay Thompson. Similar size, build, and skill set. Petro wasn't quite as tall, but has similar proportions.
In those days teams didn't shoot as many threes so of course he doesn't have as many in a season as the top guys now. But make no mistake, he was deadly in and he also shot 50 percent or close to it from the field in his last two seasons if I'm not mistaken. I don't have his stats right in front of me.
He was just entering his prime when he died tragically. But he gave every other SG in the league the business including Michael Jordan most nights. Plus, he could guard which is another similarity he has with Klay.
In today's NBA he would be a problem because he wasn't just a sharpshooter , but a guy who would punish smaller guys on the box. And he loved to beat guys off the bounce.
So I agree with Reggie and he should know. But I know too because I saw the man play.
You told the truth. I'm a die hard Bulls fan, but Drazen was special, elite talent. He could ball, handle the rock if needed, get his shot off then tell you about it. I was crushed when he got killed, what a talent.
I am Greek, we were raised during the Petrovic and Gallis era. I can assure you that there wasn't more difficult opponent than Drazen. Competitive, energetic, restless, hardworker, winner spirit all of them together. What a gifted talent he was. He surely deserved much much much more in the NBA. so sad he passed away so young.. 😢😢

Draz, Kenny Anderson and Coleman. The three headed monster. DC was probably the most gifted out of the three but Draz I think was the only one out of that three that really had winning mentality.
People don't even know about Drazen... he would pump fake... up and under and hit nothing but net. He was one of the best shot makers ever hands down. Go watch. If he didn't pass that NETS team would have been a major major force in the east. I think they would have beat Knicks and Pacers. They were becoming stacked.

Drazen is still #1 all time in 3pt % from current NBA 3pt distance. Everyone who's ahead of him padded his stats during the mid 90s
Reggie is so respectful and retrospective. Kudos. Bird, Curry, Petrovic etal....But I have to say, if a shot has to be made from anywhere, you'd have a hard time giving the ball to anyone other than Jordan...it's just he's made like a burned image in my mind of 'clutch'.
Awesome Reggie giving a shoutout to the late nets superstar!

Drazen Petrovic was really clutch when defence was wey tense and the handchecking was out of this world .
He was already a big star in Europe. I was making his name in the NBA. Sad sad heart breaking.
I'd take Robert Horry. That dude is in his own league of clutch shooters.
I met Drazen at an autograph signing a few months before he passed. Amazing guy and one of my favorite players ever.
Every respect to these two all-time greats, but I think Curry edges Petrovic ever so slightly because of his in human range and how he's managed to remain so accurate while shooting an unprecedented high volume of 3s.
Dushan Fernando just like how players from the 90's would struggle with defenses deigned to stop them
Curry would get bullied back then lmao he complains even over little slaps to his hand, and giving him an edge because nobody would even shoot from there, when they probably could, until Curry came.
Dan Liu petrovic was shooting beter then stwph in NJ he shot almost 50%
The range! demar derozan would be a great 3 point shooter in the 90s long 2s counted for 3!
Mark Price. Petro and Reggie were great, Price gets my vote. He gets Steve Kerr's too.
For anybody that wants to learn about drazan as a person and a player go watch once brothers on espn 30 for 30
Fix the title - he didn't say the best shooter EVER, only the best shooter he ever PLAYED AGAINST
I’m surprised he didn’t say Robert Horry
Steph Curry is the greatest shooter ever consistently hitting from 30 plus feet off the dribble smashing every 3 point record shit he even has the the NCAA record for threes in a season lol Steph had 402 threes last year he got 313 threes this year with 3 games left
You should check what Isiah Thomas, Gary Payton (best guard defender ever), Reggie and rest are saying about todays NBA, and that is that, there is almost no defense being played. Rules have changed so much, just to benefit guards (because of Jordan), and you just can't compare the defense from 20-25 years ago and today. In todays NBA Reggie and Dražen would drop even more threes than Steph...
jrstudio it don't matter the facts are facts there is always gonna be old timers with the " my day was better than yours" attitude the fact is Steph Curry has shattered almost every 3 point record there is the dude has 1,001 made threes in the last 3 years alone on 44% shooting!! he's on pace to break Ray Allens 3 point career record before his 33rd birthday Steph is on another level period Even Ray Allen said he's in his own category
if curry drops 44 against the goat and other great defenders then steph is the best but...
jrstudio They had to remove the hand checking because it was slowing down scoring too much.

imagine if petro had more time to play in the nba. he would be the hall of famer just like Reggie
he is in HOF
Reggie Miller, who was not only an intelligent player but had Larry as a coach, knows exactly what he is talking about. Because Dražen Petrović was special but not only in shooting. Yugoslav shooting mechanics have produced very great shooters both in the defunct Yugoslavia and in countries such as Lithuania and other countries in the Baltic area. Dražen was special because he wasn't just a shot, although obviously he had a wonderful shot of two and three. But shooters who if they had gone to the NBA or not would have had injury problems with that shooting mechanic. They would be among the best shooters in that league. Velimir Perasović, Predrag Danilović, Rimas Kurtinaitis, Arvydas Macijauskas, and without that shooting mechanics but the best Oscar Schmith Becerra and finally with a patented shot invented by Juan Carlos Navarro, the best Spanish basketball player of all time. The problem is that the NBA does not see European basketball and in the time of Dražen Petrović less. A shame some of them came to the NBA as old men and they were not even given a ball for having such closed-headed coaches. Today and with the shot of three being so important where would these players be.
Dale Ellis,Ray Allen,Reggie Miller,Dirk Nowitzki, and Drazen Petrovic are top tier three point shooters of all time.

Funny how JJ Redick said that Larry Bird was not a good 3-point shooter, LOL. And one of the best pure shooters ever, 3's or anywhere on the court, Reggie Miller's first player out of his mouth when asked who he would want to shoot a game-winning three would be Larry Bird. I like that JJ said Bird is not a good 3-Point shooter, yet Larry wins the NBA 3-Point contest 3 times in 3 consecutive years, making him the greatest 3-Point shooter of his era! WTF JJ

It is interesting to see Reggie considering Petrovic the hardest oponent of his carrer. And arguably he is one of the greatest guards of all time. However, just imagine that Petrovic himself considered another European guard above him. Nick Galis! And as Drazen has said: "If I'm the devil's son, then Galis is the devil himself"
Drazen never said that

Petrovic was a pioneer and a legend to those who followed European basketball since the 80s or early 90s.Petrovic is largely the reason this flood of European players going to the NBA began.
Technically speaking, Petrovic was flawless. His basketball IQ was far greater than guys like Clyde Drexler, John Starks, Ron Harper, etc. His work ethic and will to win could be compared only to MJ. But he never got the chance to play with an NBA contender team.
Anyway, those who know what Drazen represents for European basketball consider him the best European player to ever play the game and even if other people have or will win more, Drazen is a legend just like MJ.
Yes, MJ is the GOAT and Drazen is the GOATIE - greatest of all time in Europe

No question Petrovic was better than Galis, probably better than Dirk. As for Sabonis, we'll never know how good he could have been. Both those guys btw, Sabonis and Petrovic, had to deal with prejudice against european players in the NBA of the time.
Reggie knows the game. It's good for him to respect Drazen.
I remember the battles Petro had with MJ in the early 90's... he was legit and a lot of fun to watch.
This is what I absolutely love about Reggie....he is not so caught up in his own story that he can't give big respect to other great players. That's the mark of an ego in check, a man who has enough self-esteem that it doesn't all need to be about him.
