Americans reacting to foreign music always say something like "I don't understand what they are saying". They are not used to listening to non-english language songs at all. It is amazing how isolated they are in their own bubble.
It depends on where you're from in the US because Spanish music and k-pop is prevalent in some areas. Plus some old people enjoy classic french and italian music.
I mean, america is a whole other continent with like 3/4 languages total so its normal that they dont hear as much songs in other languages compared to europe which has a lot more different languages. Plus, most people just listen to whats popular on their radio, so except spanish and korean songs, its pretty much only english
@@seasonsgreetings2707 When I say America I mean it as the English speakers mean it. The US. It is a big country on another continent. Which doesn't matter. In my country there are popular songs on the radio that are not in English, the local language or Spanish. They are not the majority but they are definitely played. Radios play what their audience likes. In the US even Spanish songs are a trend. First wave was in late 90's early 00's and second wave was after despacito. When the trend goes away Spanish songs remain popular between the Spanish speaking community. I'm not talking about that, this is common in every country's immigrant communities. I'm talking about the general population which is culturally isolated.

You don't have to speak the language to enjoy the song. I'm danish and I listen to music in French, Spanish, Italian, German etc. and I don't speak those languages.

yes, but i think that knowing the language (and the culture) takes it to another level. for example, in zitti e buoni damiano sings “vi conviene toccarvi i coglioni” which literally means “you’d better touch your nuts” that doesn’t make sense to a person that doesn’t know italian/italian culture. In italy “touching your nuts” is a superstitious gesture, to “get rid of bad luck”, if you know what i mean. Or like when someone says “the end is near” and is being pessimistic, you touch your nuts. so it is important in order to truly understand a song. it is better to do research when you listen to songs in languages you don’t know!

The stage is the same for all the contestants but they change scenario for every song. They are very fast! Just 45 seconds to change the scenario!!!
Yeah they are putting everything into place behind the stage while the other song is still playing and then just wheel it out onto the stage and quickly build it up during the short introduction video that plays for each country. The stage crews there do amazing jobs every year

Those seats in front of the stage is called 'green room'. It's used for the delegations and artists of different participating countries so they can see other performances and cheer for each other.
Usually the green room is much farther oit and they put a live audience not only at the sides of the arena but also on the floor (where the green room was this time) but they couldn't have that many people in due to covid

That's pretty much what Italian, Spanish and other Romanic languages sound to the non-native ear. Like the rrrat-tat-tat-ta in "Begging", so many syllables and strongly pronounced consonants, it's mesmerising.
That's also one reason for me to keep listening to the other Eurovision contestant from Iceland, Daði Freyr, who I am following since FEB 2020. His songs in Icelandic, especially "Skiptir ekki máli", are entertaining for the exact same reason. It's so fast, it's so pleasing to the ear. Give it a listen, you won't regret it!

the contestants can choose whatever they want setup wise for their performance, they can use what they want, also I love eurovision so so so much i look forward to it every year and I’m so glad Italy won!!

there are limits to what is allowed, and it is up to the organising director what they will allow
this year's director was very liberal in what he was going to allow, because he himself was told no quite often when he asked if things could work for the Dutch performances
For the longest time I've tried to make people understand (I live in the USA) that you don't have to sing in English in order to rock n roll and some claimed that it can only happen in english. Finally after seeing this band setting the stage on 🔥 and their bodies moving to the sound, hit by the energy waves emanated by the music, they understand that music is universal.

if i'm not mistaken, Eurovision is the biggest non-sport-related competition in the world. And this year, they were the first to be legally allowed to have a live audience for the shows.
the thing with ESC is that it's very very expensive to host it so some countries don't even try to win the competition, they send bad songs just to make sure not to win because they couldn't afford to host it the year after.
as for italy, obviously being one the big fives (and amongst the biggest european countries) they can afford it so they always out on a good show.
the little bubbles in front of the stage are the areas reserved for the other participants this year and it looks pretty good
The big five aren't the biggest countries, but the biggest financial supporters of eurovision, because they invest so much money they get to go straight to the final. And really there's really no reason to want to lose, yes it is expensive to host, but countries make back the money in ticket sales and increase in tourism. In 2016 sweden hosted with a relatively small budget but it was one of the best events.
@@LadySioma well, yes you are right but sort of are the biggest European countries (italy, France, Spain, Germany and the uk)... and Sweden can hardly be counted as one of the minor countries... it’s well known that countries like Cyprus, Malta, Macedonia etc... couldn’t host the ESC... they don’t have any place that respects the criteria of the esc committee and if they had to build one, it wouldn’t be a smart move... of course it would boost tourism but that’s unfortunately sometimes not enough
I think that's just a myth. I think it's more likely that some countries just don't spend a lot of money on the acts they send and don't have a good selection to choose from; or some have a poor understanding of what would do well in Eurovision. Hosting Eurovision is expensive, but the revenue and the advertisement for the country are worth it in the end. Look at Azerbaijan who paid to win. Also, I'm sure a country can decline hosting if they're struggling and let another country do it, I think it's happened in the past.
Also, the examples you gave of Cyprus and Malta don't make any sense. Cyprus tries to send good songs, Fuego almost won and El Diablo sounds very commercially friendly. And Malta spenst an enormous budget on promoting their entries everywhere and any way they can, and are even being investigated for artificially boosting odds to create hype. Both of those countries clearly are in it to win it despite having to build an arena ot whatever.
Italy don't choose a random artist to send to Eurovision.
It's always the winner of the Festival di Sanremo, a competition on original Italian song by Italian artist.
That's also way it's always a song in Italian, it's required for the Festival di Sanremo rules

The name of the band is actually danish since the bassist Victoria is half danish. æ, ø, å are Nordic letters and honestly I wish people presenting would look up the pronunciation more often with the danish entry having ø as well. It just sounds weird in Norwegian ears. 😅
The base obviously changes, but the stairs were specifically for Italy. They were also the country this year with the most amount of pyro.

So basically there's a stage, everybody comes up with their own staging depending on the budget that country is ready to put into Eurovision, next to the stage - is so called "greenroom". That is where all the are siting with there team. In between acts some interviews can happen, sometimes artists come to each other to hang out in breaks, etc. That is all visible to the audience. And than audience. There used to be a fanzone right by the stage but this year is was impossible to do due to safety reasons. And yes, there was a life audience but it was much smaller than capacity of the venue (about 3000 people in total)
You also had to submit a recent negative Covid test to gain access to the audience with all contestants and their entourages being tested every 48 hours. The poor Icelandic guy missed out because someone in his group tested positive - he had to submit his rehearsal footage in the final. The previous winner had to record himself at home as he tested positive too.

I think those of us not from English speaking nations are so used to listening to music not in our native language (mostly English) from such a young age that we find it a lot more natural to continue doing so. Like even when we start learning English, looking up lyrics to make sure they are right is something many of us do. And even before knowing what lyrics mean we can still vibe and sing some gibberish that seems right. My little sister was 2 when she first started singing along to Rihanna in the car- it would be years until she knew what she was singing but that didn't matter.
I think the same is true for movies. I cannot count the amount of times I've heard people from English speaking countries say they don't watch movies with subtitles and thus no foreign language films. Meanwhile in Norway where I am from, the Disney channel stopped airing dubbed versions of their shows at 9pm and suddenly you had to learn subtitles if you wanted to watch in the evenings.

This year Eurovision took place in Rotterdam which is a city in the Netherlands because Duncan Laurence with his song 'Arcade' won the contest in 2019 (great song and live performance btw). You should really consider reacting to the rest of the top 5 (or something like that) from this year since the performances and stagings (2. France, 3. Switzerland, 4. Iceland, 5. Ukraine) are all so cool and original and give you a pretty good impression of Eurovision in my humble opinion 😊

The stage setup is totally up to the contestants. And usually the hosting country sets up those incredible multifunctional stages. Holograms transparent and semi transparent moving screens. This one has ful LED screen ceeling floors and all of the walls in the whole arena not jsut the stage. Pyrotechnics. The whole shebang.

Also note voices have to be sung live on stage. Instruments are on playback for verious reasons. But Italy nailed the performance as well. They really perform exactly like that on stage.

The local performance during the show absolutely filled the space. (not the contestant ones but the ones Rotterdam made)

Rotterdam is in the Netherlands. They won the competition in 2019, then were scheduled to host in 2020, but it was cancelled due to the pandemic. What you were asking about the space before the stage, it was the artists' green room. Usually it's positioned elsewhere, but every year the host country chooses what they want to do arena-wise, and this year due to the pandemic again, they had to have the arena at half capacity, so there was plenty of space for the green room to be in front of the stage. I think it was an awesome idea, it added up to the overall involvement of other artists in the competition. Shoutout to the Netherlands for hosting with such restrictions and still managing an amazing show!

It's even bigger than the superbowl. 185 million people watched the 2021 edition. The superbowl reached 100 million +/-.
The contestants do choose their setup, the background, the stage and even the camera placement which makes Maneskin's performance even more incredible because they chose every single detail down to how the camera follows each of them and cuts to the others. Honestly the best performance I've ever seen at Eurovision and I watched every single one every year so that's saying a lot about these guys!

rotterdam is in the netherlands. its like the second biggest city of the netherlands. amsterdam couldnt organise the contest because they did not have enough room for all the artists dressing rooms and you alse need to have a lot of space for a press center. the venue in rotterdam had a lot of big halls around the actual concert venue so that came in very handy because everything would be very close to each other. the little benches that you see on the floor of the arena is the green room. that is were all the artists will be during the show when they are not peforming. so they get to watch all the other countries peform. there was some audience in the arena. lucky i was one of the people in the audience. everyone got tested and you had to wear a mask whenever you started walking around to get a drink. i actually didnt know that you are unable to watch eurovision in the united states but i have some good news because there will be an american version in the near future so you kinda will have your own eurovision.

Rotterdam is in the Netherlands. As they won the Eurovision in 2019, they get to host the competitio, which is the common 'bat being passed on' every year from the winner the year before, to the new winner.
They all use the same stage but each country can do whatever they want with lighting, leds, props, camera angles, pyro and stage scenery (so like that extra platform where the drummer sits in this vid is just brought on stage for italys performance). There is a minute between each performance where like 20 people run up on stage to change everything for the next country. Some countries do basically nothing extra and some have huge and elaborate sets. Some of the craziest ones in recent years are Australia 2019, Russia 2016 and Moldova 2018

Every year the country that won last year's Eurovision hosts the Eurovision at their own country so every year is at a different country. Another thing is that not only countries from Europe are participating there are other countries as well like Australia that compete there! It's really exciting and every year you can experience and discover lots of different types of music and people!!
The Eurovision takes place in the country that wins the previous year. Italy wins in 2021, in 2022 the Eurovision is gonna take place in Italy.

At 6:54, the things you see in front of the stage are the places where the other artist are. So in the finale of Eurovision all 26 countries that got to the finale compete in one big show, one after another, so when they're done performing they go sit in those things you see at 6:54. And so after all 26 countries have performed the jury and the people get to vote on who wins, and that country will organise Eurovision next year. So this city is Rotterdam, in the Netherlands, because the Netherlands won the previous time (with Duncan Laurence - Arcade, might be a fun thing to react to as well)

I loved that you said it was "like Superbowl". When Madonna, Justin Timberlake and other American artists started performing during the vote verifying break in Eurovision, Graeme Norton who has commentated on the show for the BBC in the UK for the past fourteen years said "Finally, they are realising that this is Europe's equivalent to performing at the Superbowl half-time interval". The audience for Eurovision is huge, across Europe, into Asia and the Middle East, (particularly) Australia and some parts of America.

1:40 Every one has the same space, the same stage area, but they can put there anything they want and can afford... I don't know if Eurovision gives them a budget or if that is on each country though (how much resources they have for the staging)
But every one can move around or use the whole or only part of the stage as they wish.
Some of them don't even care about what the audience see, and only focus on what would appear on camera, which makes sense since this is a televised contest, between the active members of the European Broadcasting Union (and non-member associate guests such as Australia); it's not a competition of European countries, but of members of a multinational TV broadcasting company.

Rotterdam is in the Netherlands, I live 2 streets away from where it was hold this year. So I could literally see the building from my balcony, the whole area around it is decorated and prepared for it. Like the metro, some buildings, walls and more.

They have different stage setups
7:03 That is the green room, it's where the contestants hang out while they're not performing.
So, the stage is the same for all contestants. In the latest years the visual effects are a mix of in loco effects (with the screen behind the artists and the floor) and post production effects (which is pretty sick since the show is live).
Besides that, every country does multiple rehearsals with the production team to adjust the overall performance. They can have some props on stage as-well. For example, the invisible men performance was made with green clothes and green stairs.
The amount of props is limited usually, because the show is live and there’s only around 45 seconds between performances. That’s why most bands have their instruments on podiums, they can just wheel them all out really fast.
PS - They sing LIVE but all the background music is playback (they might be playing but we are not listening the instruments Live, just the voice)
At 7:10 these places are where the singers from the different countries sit with their team & watch the rest of the contest
The couches you saw in front of the stage is what we call the green room. Singers/bands sit in the green room after their performance waiting for the voting results. Sometimes the green room is in a different room in the arena/stadium/theatre, depending on the venue. This year they placed it right in front of the stage. Usually that is where the live audience would be but because of covid the audience is sitting on the sides.
At ESC they can literally do whatever they want with their staging. There's people with dresses that fill out the whole stage, people dressed as mountains, people swining around on sticks and literally whatever you can come up with. You should react to "the weirdest/ strangest ESC performances". There is some CRAZY ones!
The things in front of the stage, that light up, are the couches where the other contestants sit. It's like the "contestants lounge" or something like that.
The country who wins is getting to host the Eurovision Contest in the next year!

This is the actual ESC performance in the grand final, the previous video was the recorded music video of the song, which has to be released before the actual contest :). Every country has to send in their song before 13 march or something, and usually in the second half of may, the actual contest takes place, with two semi finals (on Tuesday and Thursday) where both times 10 countries of the 16-17 qualify for the grand final which is on Saturday There we have the 20 countries who qualified from semi final 1 and 2 together with the 'big' countries UK, Spain, France, Italy and Germany, and last but not least the host country
They use the same stage, but they design their performance themselves, so camera shots and props etc. are different
After that, jury points are counted (the jury consist of music professionals coming from each of the competing countries. Usually each country has 5-6 jurors). they call the countries one by one and then they give the points from their juries
After the total of the jury voting is counted, they move on to the public voting. Here they count the TOTAL amount of televote points a country gets (for example, Italy got 318 televote points. That's the total they've got from ALL the competing countries together). The hosts start giving the televote score from the country who finished last in the jury voting and then they work their way up, until finally the country who won the jury voting, gets their televote score.
I know it sounds complicated but it's actually very simple and VERY exiting. For example, Switzerland got the highest score from the juries (268 points) so they got their televote score last, and they got 165, which at that moment was not enough to pas Italy. You should watch the voting if you have time, it's on the ESC youtube channel!
Stage setup takes 45 seconds. There is a big crew behind the eurovision stage setup. Each act can design it as they wish. Italy also picked the biggest amount of pyro available. 🇮🇹❤️

You really need to react to Iceland's performance. That one seemed to confuse you in the all songs reaction, and it does seem to confuse many Americans, but it did place 4th overall in the competition so clearly well loved by us Europeans
so I would love to see you react to the full song, even if you don't end up loving it us much as I do

This song is my favourite of this band. before listening to the song I suggest you to read the lyrics because it's so beautiful, authentic and meaningful! Rotterdam is in the Netherlands. The Netherlands won in 2019 so they were the hosts this year. (It got moved up a year cus of COVID).
Also the staging changes per country depending on what they want and how much they can spend. The Netherlands are one of the best in the world when it comes to stage design so this year was epic! 🥰

I used to listen to mostly English and Dutch songs when I was younger (When I was like 8-12 years old), but now I don’t really care what the language is as long as I enjoy it, it’s going in my Spotify playlist. But I do have some languages that are more common in my playlist like: English, Korean, Thai, Chinese, French, Spanish. I don’t like songs in my own language (Dutch) most of the time so they don’t make the playlist, but I hear them on the radio😂

The stage (physical space wise) is the same for everyone as all artists perform in the same "arena" but each country gets to design their own stage (lights, fireworks, stairs in this case, a gigant moon in Spain´s case...).
Also, each year´s winner gets to host the Eurovision Song Contest the next year. In 2019, in Israel, won the Netherlands with Duncan Laurence (song name: Arcade, really recomend it) and so ESC 2020 was supposed to happen but then all this s**t happend and so they postponed to this year. It was celebrated in Rotterdam and, as Italy won, next year´s will be somewhere in Italy.

Ahoy Rotterdam was decked out for these artists, led screens, pyro, lighting and more. The artists could basically stage their performance however they wanted, only limit is imagination and current technology. Max people on stage is 6 though. One guy got a giant inflatable moon, another artist got a lot of greenscreen effects, there was falling sand at some point...I could go on...
Rotterdam is in the Netherlands. It was organized as a 'test event' since the country was not yet out of lockdown at that time. The whole audience, all artists, media and other crew where tested for covid every 48 hours at least. When tested positive they had to go in quarantine. The band from Iceland tested positive so during the finals they were not able to do their performance, audiences at home didn't notice btw, because they played the video of one of their rehearsals on location so the stage looked exactly the same as the other performances.
