On the knight forks thing.. one trick that has really helped me is if your pieces are on 2 different colors they can never be forked by a knight or bishop. Makes end game calculation a lot easier
Another very helpful tidbit is a knight changes the color square he's on with every move, so if your king is currently on the opposite color as your enemy's knight, the knight can NEVER move with check. Another thing I did which was VERY helpful was to pay attention to the patterns where a king and knight can be positioned such that the knight CAN move with check, and then avoid those. Specifically, the patterns are opposite corners of 1x5, 3x5, 2x4, and 4x4 blocks (by "block" I just mean "squares on the board in that arrangement"). If your king is on the corner of these arrangements with an enemy knight on the opposing corner, he's in danger. Every time the enemy moves a knight or I need to move my king, I check for these patterns. These are also the positions in which your pieces are forkable by a enemy knight. This sounds a lot harder than it is when written out, makes a lot more sense when you're looking at the patterns on a board. Just place a knight so it's checking your king, and then look at all of the options he has for where he could have gotten to that position from. It's a very pretty pattern IMO! (Note: there are also the trivial patterns such as 1x3 and 2x2 but those are simple and don't take as much focus to catch, thus they seem to be less helpful when considering enemy knight moves with check. However, they are still helpful to file in the back of your brain under forkable piece positioning to help you recognize danger you're in or forks on the enemy. I seem to miss these ones a lot less than the other patterns though.)
Different colors means they can't be forked by a pawn either. Similarly, knights change color on every move, so if you want to get to a square the same color as the one you're on, you know it will take an even number of moves.
@@ahmedkhaled6797 lmao 1100, so maybe take my advice with a grain of salt or two 😜 There's this great little roguelike called Shotgun King and actually despite the fact that it's a VERY different game than chess (in case you didn't catch the "Shotgun" part lol), I did get a ton of practice moving my king in such a way as to avoid knight checks. The king is your only piece so managing getting checked is a big part of the game. I actually didn't even notice these patterns until playing that game, but I haven't put that much time into Shotgun King and still found it a very effective training tool for this concept specifically.
The thing about boys and girls playing chess differently is so freaking true. I had a strong girl in my age group playing tournaments and all the boys (including me) would play hyperagressive chess. Congrats on the retirement. My favorite part of that GM attempt was your explanation of how you analyzed your potential plans at different stages of the game. Hearing your thought process helped me think though my games better. Hope you can still do that with non-competitive games for us.
I think many of us spend 0 time in longer time controls because we’re just making the most immediately intuitive move. We (or at least I) struggle to differentiate opening, middlegame, and endgame, so we want to have plenty of time for “later.” Kinda like when you don’t use rare consumables in a video game.
I kinda get that and I was like that too when I started out. I guess over time you start to get a better grasp on when to spend time. Basically if you’re between two moves that look extremely similar, just play the move your intuition tells you. If you’re in a mundane position, just stick to the basics and develop. However if you feel like it’s a “wtf is even happening” position or you think there could be a possible checkmate or a way to win material, that’s when you should be spending the bulk of your time. There’s no use in “saving it for later” when you’re incredibly lost. A winning position takes way less time to play so if you spend your time accordingly and gain an advantage, there’s a very high chance you’ll gain all that time back throughout the rest of the game since your opponents moves will be much more difficult to find

Over the course of a game, many different squares will make for great knight forks, so it’s good to be aware when and where they are and, most importantly, whether a knight can teach them. Pins and skewers are similar; be aware of when you create something that is “pinnable” or “skewerable”.

4:22 Good to hear that disclaimer. I'm sure no one wants some guy at court saying "Gothamchess told me to"
no longer retired!!
23:17 can feel the disappointment radiate through the screen.
Congrats on retiring. Hopefully you'll have time now for the how to win at chess series and rating climbs.
please win at chess series yes
Aaaaaahhhh Guess the Elo! I'm always so looking forward to see the next one, it's the best series on the planet!
The commentary during the last game was absolute gold. LMAO😭
Thoughts and prayers go out to Gabriel. No one should ever have to go through that. So sad to see.
Guess the ELO is an amazing series.
Levy I love your sense of humor. Makes your videos so much more entertaining
Those that can't, teach. But it's not all bad - where would Hikaru be without his father? You may not be a great chess player, but perhaps you could be the teacher or father of a great chess player!
Lmao he is a great Chess player just not a GM
bro he is literally an international master. That's like telling a multimillionaire "You may not have much money, but..."
Shut yo disrespectful ass up
He is a phenomenal chess player, when it comes to top players, well Carlsen had no titled players in his family yet he is the best
That's a good quote, can you send me where he said that?
Tbh i only watch guess the elo for watching levy and the games played by people whether they good or bad i learn so many new tactics and mistakes aswelll idc if levy is wrong or right on guessing the elos of players but i love watching this series as some players are on my level and some on above of my level it makes my chess skills improve so thank u for this series bro👌🏻
Currently building a time machine to save Gothys ELO!🤣
22:00 I like to just keep an eye out for deadly squares. Over the course of a game, many different squares will make for great knight forks, so it’s good to be aware when and where they are and, most importantly, whether a knight can teach them. Pins and skewers are similar; be aware of when you create something that is “pinnable” or “skewerable”.
Geometry dash
Yes! This is the stuff we need. Forget other stuff. Guess the elo for life!
Levy: what am I supposed to guess?
Two people in chat: The elo
Gotham worried after his last tournament that people will play Guess his Elo
I hope and pray their son gets the surgery and makes a speedy recovery!
Imagine having to explain to your parents that when they heard the words "c4" that it was just a guess the elo GothemChess video and it was referring to the space on a chess board
cool story bro
Imagine your parents hearing someone say "c4" and then questioning you about it.....
@@conorohagan9947 imagine instead of your parents its the police...
If the police asked me why someone on UA-cam said c4 I would assume they were joking....
Those last two games. Fantastic!!
Hope the best for the Georgian family and their son.
Very good initiative Levy, I proud to follow you. Hope you keep the good work for many many other years
"A dude played that move!"
Yeah, he is right. I'd play that move. My girlfriend doesn't play chess, barely know how a knight captures and she wouldn't have played that move.
I loved the way they simplified to an endgame in the last game :-D
Levy , really appreciate this act of yours !
There are times when life puts you in situations which one even don't wanna dream of.
Indeed Neuroblastoma is a cancer , though it's survival rate is pretty high ! Which ofcourse is a soothing fact !
The quote that they received from Spain was €450,000 and its a pretty damn high amount .
A Gofundme page has been created for Gabriel by WGM Nino Maisuradze. All the money collected there will be used for Gabriel's treatment.
Their friends started fundraising for Gabriel and in the last few days the amount of money that was collected was about €60,000 Euro.
They are selling all of their properties but unfortunately, it is not even half of the amount that they need.
Guys kindly save this 1 yr old and donate .
May god bless you all !
huge reason why countries need universal healthcare, disgusting to let a child die for financial reasons when he can be treated
@@jordanjanice1 exactly , there should be a organisation for such children , i mean i understand that private institutions cant run without extracting money outta people's pocket , it's their job , but atleast dont let a 12 months old die because of this !
I don't think I've laughed so hard in my life. Thank you for what you do.
I'm retiring as a sub if you do this.
00:16:48 that is the noise of a rook
Now you're using children with cancer for clickbait! Absolutely horrible!
Don't be a garbage human, Tim
you belong in the hall of shame

That's just sad
I love watching GTE twice, once live and another time here on YT.
"I'm retired and I wouldn't even play that move."
Love it.
I'm surprised. In a good way.
That title was actually _not_ a clickbait.
Way to go Levy!
The thumbnail is just perfect
Please make some more openings videos like the Blackmar Diemer or Jänisch! Love those
Great episode. Top notch comedy and a good cause. Best of luck to Gabriel and his family.
This was one of my favourite ever eps of GTE.
There was at least a few moments I genuinely couldn't stop laughing.
35:55 some surreal casting there, totally amazed me man!
One of my favorite gte videos ever. Game two was so funny
