Caitlin Clark had another record-setting game in the Indiana Fever's crushing loss to the Washington Mystics on Wednesday. Despite Clark leading the charge to cut the deficit from 21 to 3 in the fourth quarter, guard Kelsey Mitchell and Coach Christie Sides waved her off, each in her own way.

I was at the game, CC was so upset coach called that time out at the min mark, She yelled "dont call that time out" we had the mystics on their heals and gave them time to reset. I have to agree with CC you have to let the game play out here. I want to like Sides and give her Grace.. but she is making it hard.
Don’t forget, sites has been pulled by Engelbert about what she can, and cannot do. She is complacent in the sabotaging. She might get fired by Indiana, but she has bigger fish to fry in the WNBA.
To take out your best player, best stealer, best shooter when you need a steal and a 3 point shot to tie? That is next level crazy.
The Iowa coach kept CC on the floor in games as much as possible, that was not favouritism, it was common sense.
Coach Sides' thinking: Man, we need a steal. Time to take out the girl who has five steals in this very game.

She doesn't guard a player well. She gets turnovers off of anticipating what on off player will do. Allen Iverson did the same thing. When you observe what the player or area of assignment that she has, and how much scoring is produced, that's where the liability is seen.
@@robertparker3586 finally! Someone is talking about plus/minus in regard to CCs defense. So, what are the stats in regard to her defensive assignments or area of defense? Who, exactly, is going off against her?

The whole team, especially the post players, gets cooked. If they actually play good, both Smith and Boston... they win!
Yup, Kelsey wanted to play hero ball. I don't like her unpredictability. And Sides is a joke. I can't stand her idiotic decisions...needs to go.
Sides should have benched Mitchell right on the spot and explain to her that she should have passed it to Caitlin since Caitlin was hot and Mitchell was not.
At Iowa Clark was the team’s general. The offense ran through her, and everyone was on board, coach and teammates. As a result, they far exceeded expectations given their size, talent, etc. relative to other teams. If the Fever would simply follow Iowa’s example, they would obviously be a better team and have more wins. I can understand their hesitation at the beginning of the season: giving a rookie full command. But now Clark has proven herself beyond a doubt. You can see she’s a five-star general on the court, but she’s being waved off and undermined by her lieutenants. In basketball and the military, breaking chain of command is disastrous to your strategy and morale. As a veteran, Mitchell is probably embarrassed to hand over leadership to Clark, especially in critical moments. Her act of waving Clark off was pure egoism. That’s very destructive. Even if they replace Mitchell with a lesser talent, the team would do much better.

Totally agree. CC was a spectator at the end of the game. The problem is Sides. Sides doesn't seem to see Mitchell's play as a problem. She's a shooter and doesn't see the floor. Meanwhile, Sides downplays CC's performance saying, " She's showing improvement". I wonder if Sides wanted Clark on her team. Fire Sides

If I need a steal, why would I take the player that understands passing lanes out of the game. Who had the most steals and blocked shots? Please explain how she is a liability.

Great evaluation. Bad mistake by Sides. Caitlin was hot at that point defensively and in offence.

Good defensive teams don't want to rely upon the gamble. The Fever will have to build around CC. Look at the GS model. Steph Curry isn't a defensive stopper either. Hence, you put people who are good two way players around your franchise. Draymond Green, Klay Thompson, ect....
For every 1 turnover she may collect, there are dozens of plays where she gets blown by on defense. You have to watch both sides of the game.
Sides' strategy:
1. We need a steal. Let's substitute out the player with five steals who's led this comeback.
2. We need a three. Let's send the player who is 5-9 (with 15 points in the quarter) to the far side away from the ball so we can set up a shot for a player who is 0-7.
CC had more steals in this game than anyone but you take her out in hopes of getting a steal??? Truly embarrassing level of stupid for Coach Sides. At this point, CC should only come out of the game when she asks for a rest. At this point, CC should be allowed to run this team as a veteran point guard is allowed to do in most cases. She is clearly smarter than the coach .

One other thing Coach Sides did which makes ZERO sense is changing the starting lineup after a win against #1 team.

Typical behavior from those 2. CC played well but im tired of seeing the league, her coach, espn and certain teamates work against her. On top of that seeing AR stat padding in a desperate attempt to keep her double double streak alive sickens me. Its bush league play and ruins the fair level of competition, it makes the W look bad and is disrespectful to the game.

Can't remember who the Sky were playing but it was ridiculous, she never even came into the frame until the ball was thrown the length of the court to her under the offensive basket.
She lets the other team go on a huge run,, without calling time-out, but when HER team is hot, she call time-out.
It's almost as she wants to humiliate CC by taking her out when they need something big. WHICH TEAM MATE HAS SHE CLEARLY PULLED FOR A SPECIFIC PLAY LIKE THAT.

Sides is undoubtedly trying to sabotage CC. Even a blind person listening to a Fever game on the radio would be able to see what she is doing.

I actually think it's more difficult than we fans think it is to manage the egos of an entire team of professionals who feel they are equally capable and should be getting just as many touches of the ball as the new fan favorite-girl.
This puts Sides in a position to make sure everyone is happy with how often they touch the ball. Which makes fans of CC mad. I don't think Sides is against Caitlin....she just understands the feelings of the entire team. Any coach they get will have to deal with that.
If we are this frustrated, I can't imagine how CC must be feeling.
She took her out. What an incompetent move. Like a high school move. Like trying to be a brilliant coach but instead proves incompetence. She had 5 steals already. No one else had 5 steals. Foolish
Christie Sides did an injustice to Caitlin Clark. Caitlin Clark has 15 points in the last quarter to close the 21-point deficit. She deserves to take the shot try in the dying seconds. To take her out of the last play is an unforgivable decision of Christie Sides. #FIREChristieSidesNOW

What's odd about Kelsy waiving CC off is Caitlin had given her 6 or 7 wide open looks during the game. Kelsey just didn't make the shots. Sides takes out CC late in game when she had 5 steals and 3 blocks that contributed to the comeback. Was Sides not watching the game unfold in front of her. It's inexcusable coaching and really poor situational awareness.
C.C , is the first woman to break a record , while getting an award for breaking a record she was the first women while winning an award at the ESPYS , and ESPN brushes is under the rug She was the first woman to ever win 'best record-breaking performance ESPY award .

Caitlin has more steals and blocks than both Cordoso and Reese, and the “general consensus” is that she can’t play defense. It was criminal as a coach to not run the final play through her, since she’s responsible for the most points in the W.

well I don't know if I"d go that far. they need to work on defense, e.g. not waive Celeste Taylor. and they need to buy in to actually using the 1st round draft pick they have, and use her as a point guard. but yes, the coach could be part of making that happen.
I’m an IU fan. Live here in Indiana. While CC was at Iowa, I disliked Caitlin of course. She complained a lot to officials. Still does, but now she plays for our team in Indy. THE number 1 thing I did learn is that if a team wants to win, you NEVER take Caitlin Clark out at the end of the game. If it was for defense, wouldn’t you want the player with the most steals to be in? It’s mind blowing. Kelsey was the best player on the team. Twenty three games into her career, Caitlin is among the top 20 players in the league. Someone needs to advise Christie Sides that.
She is the best player I have seen in my 63 years and I played and watched a lot of basketball in my life.
CC doesn't complain anymore to the refs than anyone else does. And most of the time, she is correct in doing that.

To be fair, there were/are many players who complained to the refs on a regular basis, Clark was definitely one, but the cameras were constantly on Caitlin, so it made her look bad.

I think Kelsey is talented but my problem is that she's doesn't see anything but the net and is not a team player. I'm not asking for her to be a play maker, just pass to an open player and don't hijack the ball for ten seconds in a possession.
I feel like Mitchell is what people who had never actually watched Caitlin thought she was. When in reality she’s probably the best playmaker in the entire league, already. Mitchy is a scorer and a good one unfortunately sometimes you’ve got to find a better play and she’s either incapable or is deciding not to. Would love if they had a coach that could help get the best out of her and show her when to drive like she does and when to see her teammates.

Thank you for breaking this down so well. Sides' coaching is inexcusable.
Sides is under a microscope with millions of people watching. She doesn't know that to be effective, the plays need to start with her point guard, whether she likes it or not. Watching her try to fight that concept is painful to see. It is like a football coach who doesn't like starting each play with the ball in the quarterback's hands. It shows a lack of fundamental understanding and makes her resentment of the point guard clear to everyone. That just can't be allowed to continue. It would be the kindest to remove her now and not force her to keep embarrassing herself on national television. I suspect they are leaving her, hoping her incompetence will get them another lottery pick, but that isn't fair to anyone, especially Sides.

I usually like Mitchell and her energy. But to think someone is going to finally get hot in the last 60 seconds of a game? Insanity.
Mitchell had someone wide open under the basket and instead of passing to them, she shoots a horrible 3pt shot
Having watched Fever only this season the weakness is Mitchell. A streaky, selfish player who listens to no one. Mitchell should be taken aside and told her purpose on the team, and that is to support her team.
All focus should be on CC running the offense. CC should touch the ball every single time up the floor (Magic Johnson). This gives CC the best view to see what the defense is giving them and react. Sitting CC on the bench in critical junctions is like taking the QB out of the game in the final 2 minutes of an NFL game. STUPID.
That's where a legitimate coach would put Mitchell on the bench until she learned to play team basketball.
As soon as Mitchell and Boston were named All-Stars, I would have traded them. They'll never be worth more than that moment.

Not only is Coach Sides acting like Caitlyn Clark is a defensive liability like you showed, she's also acting like Caitlyn Clark is a liability on offense! Why deny the ball to Caitlyn when she brought back in the game? She might as well bench her for the last minute altogether! Why put her back in the game with 16.2 seconds, only to have her set screens and run decoy!? Either she can't coach or she wants to limit Caitlyn Clark's potential for success. The only person to blame is Christie Sides and how can she be so clueless. She comes off of beating the best team in the league and changes the lineup as well as the game plan. What is that???? It is so frustrating I feel so bad for Caitlin, she doesn't deserve a coach that is so incompetent.
Sides killed their chances when she called a time out when Clark got fouled shooting a 3. I was at the game and it was very chippy. Also please credit Lexie Hull's defense in the comeback. She had to defend HinesAllen and Dolson in the post and she got deflections both times the Mystics tried to get the ball to them.
YES! Hull always brings the intensity. I didn't say it in this video, but I did talk about it during my live of the game. Good point!
I was at the game, too. Did you see Clark’s frustration when the Sides called the timeout? I don’t blame her. They had the momentum. Sides makes bad decisions, bad substitutions and she doesn’t stand up for her players or use her challenge. Dolson clobbered Samuelson, and I thought it could have been upgraded to a flagrant, but Sides hardly said anything. Clark got fouled on a block when she was taking the ball to the basket in the 4th quarter, and Sides didn’t say anything but yelled at Clark about he inbounds play as the block had went out of bounds. The way Clark looked walking off the court at the end of the game reflected what us fans were feeling…disappointment over a missed opportunity of Clark taking the final shot. Sides needs to go!
Yes, her frustration was very evident. I'm guessing the Fever management will keep Sides through the end of the season and look for a new coach during the off season.

Sides actions reminded me of the game not too long ago where Caitlin scored 5 points in 14 seconds and Sides called a time out immediately. She doesn't seem to be able to keep up with Caitlins game... Yet she watched 17 points happen against them before calling a timeout in this game...

Trust me these dummy fever management people like the general manager and the owner think this young coach is doing a good job. Caitlin Clark is not shooting the ball when the game is on the line all season coming out of time out you have to set something up for her. She doesn't have to shoot the clutch shot every time Mitchell can help with that or somebody else but this is ridiculous Caitlin never shoots when time is running out in the game and the game is undecided.

Yeah. That was a weird last play. Give it to your playmaker who both leads the team, is by far your best passer, is your scoring leader, and is currently hot in the game. And you live or die with that. Jordan kicked out to an open Steve Kerr. You give it to your playmaker, and they take the shot, or they kick it over to an open player.
This coach just doesn't have a clue what she is doing she just needs to be FIRED! Caitlin Clark should never be out of the game at the end of a game, Sides has never watched her college games and sees what she can do under pressure. Sides is PATHETIC! As a coach, I used to let my best player inbound the ball and then get it back immediately. That way he’s going toward the basket. Sides had Clark trying to run a back cut, which they double-teamed, and Mitchell still couldn’t run the play.🙄

CS said that she had studied CCs game before draft.. I dont know if she missed her best highlights , where she won games time and time again at the buzzer or she sent it to overtime and then won the extra time almost by herself by assisting and scoring like she did yesterday in the 4 Q…she is killing that self confidence that made CC the espectacular player the world got crazy about…and the whole indiana organization is looking the other way, including CCs boyfriend. Caitlin needs to stand up for herself and not be do submissive about these decisions by the coach not to have her shoot the last shot. Enough is enough, this is not the first time the coach hasn’t gone to cc on the last play. Has sides seen Caitlin play at Iowa where she has won games in the last second?
The problem is the same with the coaching staff as it is with the folks in the comments. Everyone tries to softshoe their approach to criticizing Mitchell. Being quick and out of control with no more to offer than a streaky best attribute should result in an invitation to ride the pine. Her presence is a hindrance. All it takes is one apple to go bad. In this case the team will never follow Caitlin Clark because Mitchell continues to upset the power structure. The game against the mystics was a one off. Caitlin can do that more often than not. However she won't because she's always placating Mitchell. It needs to be said simple and plain that the entire offense runs through Clark. If they don't like it ask for a release.
I just typed this about the benching... she's competing with CC. That's a damn problem.
Realistically it's not a fixable problem and it shows every time Mitchell touches the ball. They have to deal her away along 4 to 5 other players. The rookie on the Washington team would have played well with Clark. Until then it's about trying to make the playoffs.

I want you to watch sides on the sidelines when Clark is asking and gets waived off by Mitchell. She turns her back on the action and is walking back towards her bench, so strange. Like nothing to see here 👀

Mitchell despises that this team belongs to a much better player. And that isn't gonna change. If she was on the Liberty, she'd be benched /traded for this kind of play with it being Ionescu's team. Send her down the road sooner than later. Get a G that will play CC's game.

Forth quarter come back was led by CC, Lexie Hull’s great defense, and AB. Without Lexie’s great defense they wouldn’t have stopped the Mystic’s. Some how the Fever needs to get their act together playing defense.

Sides has made called these same silly anti Clark plays in every close game this season. These anti-Clark, last minute plays will definitely cost Sides her job. The sooner the better for the Fever!
