Just saying.. The thermostat noted under the coolant reservoir is actually the "coolant level sensor" and you can get to the lower water pump bolt with a 10mm spanner without removing the crank bolt. If you do want to remove the crank bolt you'll need a 3' long - 3/4 breaker bar and a special tool lock pin for the flywheel as it is torqued to 441nM
Nate, I've done a complete rebuild on my E38. I bought the upgraded Valley Pan gasket and used plenty of the Ultra Gray sealant. The damn thing started leaking crazy after about 700 miles. I was really disappointed cause it had never leaked/ seeped/ dripped up to that time. I keep wondering about the expansion and contraction of the Aluminium Block over time causing the new gasket to fail. Any ideas to completely secure this gasket. It's a huge pain to think about doing this over and over. I've correctly torqued the bolts. The ultra Gray has done awesome everywhere else and the engine runs beautifully after the complete rebuild. Just this damn gasket I don't wanna keep redoing. As I stated I bought the upgraded gasket. I will clean it up and reuse it cause there is less than a 1000 miles on the gasket/rebuild. Have you had repeated issues with any one particular install and if so, what was your final solution to FINALLY seal this for good? Also thoughts on the BMW coolant? I did use the blue coolant because it's a total rebuild. BMW says it helps "lube & protect" the cooling components water pump etc, but wanted your thoughts on the green/orange/blue coolant. I appreciate all the help and the vids are always a help. I have 3 Beemers at home and I check with your material when I can for help.
I just had an issue with my 2000 540i.... My upper radiator hose blew off the plastic housing where it clamps.. I removed the factory band clamp (non adjustable) and put a regular hose clamp on it which lasted for a week.... Then it happened again.... at this point I noticed the knurl on the plastic outlet was broken off which helps keep the hose from sliding off under pressure.... I have ordered a complete upper hose which comes with the new hose and plastic ends... Hopefully that will take care of it.
Hi there. How do i even get to the (2) hoses that fail that connect to the two ports on the Coolant pipes that run to the back of the engine? I can feel them one has a big hole in it and the other feels rotten. Any help would be appreciated. Many thanks for all the info and videos Nathan.
@Nathans BMW Workshop whats the line under the intake from the water pump called? Trying to find gaskets and o rings. I couldnt think of the name for this . And you just said "this guy right here" in the video lol.
thanks for the lesson one more thing i how to clean the Oil Sludge in my engine, Will the Oil pump be affected please advise if it might cost me too much than replacing the whole engine
Mine had been leaking where the two small hoses go to each bank of the top of the heads on the N62 engine. If using "blue BMW coolant it will coagulate" where it's leaking when heated. especially when dripping down the engine block.
Hi NathanFirst to say regards to all your work and effort you are putting in every video! Q1: which coolant liquid do you recomend for M62TU, usually in all my bimmers e- series i had blue, now in e38 i found red liquid.Q2: my water pump on e38 740i m62tu has a small play on shaft can be felt when fan clutch is moved up down , pump works properly and there is no issues regarding leaks or overheating, also from outside it looks brand new probably replaced by previous owner. Usually i do all maintenence by myself so replacement is not a problem bud i dont want to spend Money on new one if this is common item to all of them after some time...Brg
Nathan, you mentioned a weap hole in the rear that drains when the intake water pipe leaks. Are there freeze plugs in the back of the head on a 1997 740iL ? I'm looking at a BMW for sale and the owner said the rear head freeze plug is bad. Owner said the car overheated & he poured cold water into the engine while running which is always a bad idea. Is it possible he's right about the pug popping out or the leaking intake under pipe ? Could the plug be replaced without pulling the engine ? Seems like a tight spot but the price is $1200 assuming it sounds good as claimed. Thanks
Hey, I've got a really strange problem with a leak. Can found steam coming out out area near front window/driver side. I don't find cooling line there (at least not visible at first sight). Do You have maybe any ideas where can be a leak?
@NathanDIYGarage, is it ok to run green non bmw coolant in a bmw. I run it and mine and haven't had a problem, but I had posted pics of my valley pan gasket job and it had green coolant in it and the bmw guys went crazy on me. What's your take? Thanks
I have a 2003 bmw 745li and my engine overheated yesterday and the coolant is leaking it has a aftermarket exhaust and there was a lot of smoke coming out of the front of the engine. I’m thinking about ordering a bimmerfix coolent kit.. has anyone ever used that kit or is it good? Comes with a lifetime warranty
OK. Nate I got one for you .I have a 2003 range Rover with the m62 I bought 2 weeks ago .the people gave up on it. it was real rough starting.got some codes .it had a k& n filter.on it.so I started with putting the original air filter system in and it started first turn . sounded and operated smoother then before about 45 miles of use it dropped to the red.i limped home .I suspect a hose split in back .it's got 98k..instead of fixing the hose or where ever it's leaking from .would it be wise to just do a timing chain job and all the necessary repairs to get it up to road worthy.or should do a compression test first.before the investment.of coarse I will be doing it all myself.with the help of your videos .can you give me your wisdom to do the correct thing and save this beast of an engine ? thank you for your videos .
What codes and what shape is it in usually a motor swap is Easyer then a timing chain job so fix what's needed run it to the ground and buy a low k motor ....to do the chain is hard work and usen chines parts are not a good idea
Nathan I wish I could send you my 2003 Range Rover, dealer wants $7,000 to fix my timing and a light coolant leak, I wish I could get it done by you instead.
great video thanks .just bought a 2003 540i m will be replacing waterpump and valley pan gasket and misc seals

I was able to do water pump w/o removing crank pully
Any idea why I would suddenly have a rear engine coolant leak triggering the transmission fail safe
you dont have to take the crank pulley off. you can reach it with a racheting wrench
That was very helpful. Thank you. I have the squeal on startup and water pump leak. Now I know what caused the squealing.
No need to take the crank pulley off, you can take the bolt out without removing the pulley
Yes, a pain to get out with open end wrench, but possible.
I did it, wasn't that bad...
You don't have to take the crank pully off unless you want to. but 10mm racheting wrench or closed end of open en wrench 2 hands to not drop the bolt.
Can you do a video on how to remove the electrical box and clips from the M62tu engines?

Did that work?

tks for the video - highlighting all the potential "leak" area's
Thermostat in the expansion tank?
Did you mean the coolant-level sensor?
Pretty sure my 2002 Morgan Aero8 has this same engine...terrific sound
You forgot the transmission thermostat aka voltage regulator . That thing is notorious to crack . That’s what is blowing up these cars

Like ever other video about the cooling system, you missed the most common-but-not-obvious leaks: Alternator and auto transmission cooler lines

How do know when to replace the thermostat?
thank you for the information 👍
Great video!
FYI, 1997-98 non-vanos (USA) and remaining years TU.
What is the part call?
Nathan I wish I could send you my 2003 Range Rover, dealer wants $7,000 to fix my timing and a light coolant leak, I wish I could get it done by you instead.
The coolant system on these cars aren't make for warmer regions. Horrible design by BMW
Pure junk .. try having one of these cars in the south . Rolling the dice on long trip
Easy shit man!
