  • ❗❗❗This video is mainly about the last moments and death of Kurt Knispel. The events described in the video - specifically the German counterattack. Also, the accompanying armored and support vehicles depicted may not agree with contemporary reports.❗❗❗
    Regarding the number of destroyed tanks:
    Kurt Knispel often let another tankman take credit for a destroyed tank. There were many such cases and therefore I am convinced that he was able to destroy many more tanks than is officially stated.
    I made Knispel's Tiger 2 as exactly as the editor allowed me to do. And according to the book: Šikovatel Kurt Knispel: Vítěz bez vavřínů - Vlastimil Schildberger a kol. - www.zbozi.cz/v...

    According to Otto Carius, German panzer commanders almost always went into battle with their hatch open and with their head outside of the tank. They did this to better see and hear threats and detect ambushes. Carius said the only reason the Germans had so many kills against Russian tanks is that the Russians fought "buttoned-up" with all hatches shut and therefore with terrible visibility.

      And German cupolas generally had better all round vision than allied tanks. The Sherman cupola, for example, is almost flush to the turret roof, encumbered by turret roof fixtures and fittings in the way.

      Well, yeah, that's pretty much doctrine for US Tankers today (ok, I was a tanker in he mid 1980s, which isn't exactly "today" anymore, but that's still correct I'm sure). The tiny little portholes and sights in the turret make it very hard to see other tanks. The gunner usually can't find other tanks until the tank commander lays the gun in the general vicinity of the enemy. The only time you button up is when there is a significant small arms or artillery threat. Tanks don't aim for individual crewman, so it doesn't make you that much safer to button up in a tank vs. tank fight. Yes, there was that time in "Fury" when a tank commander was beheaded by a main gun round, but that was pretty much just bad luck.

      This was exactly the same doctrine clash twenty years later between israelis in Centurions and commanders in open hatch, against buttoned-up T-55 and T-62s (Jom-Kippur war). German panzer commanders even sometimes scout on foot before they went in with vehicles.

      @@libertycowboy2495 I was stationed at Fort Hunter Liggett in California in a non-TO&E unit. We were dedicated to acting as the red force for new military equipment that the Army (or Marines) were testing. I was the second platoon leader; my unit was simply known as "Armor Company, USACDEC, later USATEC, for "US Army, Training and Experimentation Command". Later on, I transferred to Military Intelligence, and went to Germany with HHC, 2nd Brigade, 8th Infantry Division, stationed near Mannheim. After the Gulf War, 1st Armor Division came back and was demobilized. Politically, however, they wanted to have two tank divisions in Germany, so overnight, with no changes other then the colors (and we got their Bulldog mascot), we became 1st AD. I don't think I ever realized until that point there was no difference between a tank and an infantry division besides the name (unless you are a specialty unit like Airborne or 7th ID (Light).

    While Michael Wittman was probably the most famous tank commander during the second World War, Kurt Knispel is really one of the great, relatively unsung. commanders. 168 kills is mind-boggling, and the fact he survived as long as he did when so many of his peers had fallen is also incredible. thanks for bringing his story to light.

    For everyone who is asking why is Kurt Knispel´s name mostly unknow althought he had so many kills is that he wasn´t much popular between his commanders since he kicked ass of some soldier for beating soviet POW, another reason was probably in his visage, because he had long hairs and beard which also wasn´t popular in German army. He had a blocked his career path.

    Excellent, well done. Kurt had a great smile and was a maverick of his time. He upset some people only because he had great morals and ethics. He should have been awarded the Knights Cross and maybe even Oak Leaves for the amount of damage he and his crew inflicted on the enemy. He at the very least should have been promoted above Feldwebel. Kurt will always be one of my favorite Tiger Aces. May he and his crew RIP.

    • @natveet7557
      @natveet7557  Рік тому

      yes, he should have received an award for his merits, but as in any totalitarian regime, loyalty to the regime or the right mindset is more important than a person's abilities.
