This song has always made me cry. At 58, still does. Not just bc I admire Marilyn....Sir Elton's line about "never knowing who to cling to, when the rain sets in..." hits hard. I learned the hard way, when the rain sets in, some of us only have ourselves to cling to. Loneliness IS tough.
    Stay strong, my sisters.
Rest in Eternal Peace, Marilyn, my sister.

This song will always be such a beautiful tribute to Marilyn.
As much as I love & adore Princess Diana, I wish Elton could have made a song specifically dedicated to her.
Both women deserve their own songs from a legend like Elton.

Sir Elton was grief stricken at the death of Princess Diana, they were friends, and he didn't have much time to come up with a tribute.

Her grace and sorrow went hand in hand. Such a tragic life she had. She wanted to find the ultimate love...wrong men wrong time. A child was not to be ...that may have helped her mentally. Such a beautiful soul..so misunderstood.

... and her smile was absolutely dominating. No one stood a chance against it. ❤❤ With her ethereal beauty and mesmerizing presence, Marilyn Monroe embodied the essence of Hollywood glamour. Her legacy is as lasting as the stars themselves. You can't find a single photo in which her beauty is "more or less"... She is always beautiful, exuberant, radiant and sexy! Few people understood Marilyn. She was an archetype of pure love. In addition to being beautiful, she was intelligent, witty and very noble. She was a woman well ahead of her time. The world was definitely not ready for her. A star that will shine in our sky forever. And it's sad to know that there are people who only see the dark side of her life. 😢😢

Though Marilyn Monroe died a few years before I was born her name was still very popular in my childhood. Her name and that of Elizabeth Taylor were some kind of a royalty, a legend always mentioned on radio, tv and by the grown ups. I could only imagine how much more reverence she enjoyed during her lifetime.

    Goodbye Norma Jean
Though I never knew you at all
You had the grace to hold yourself
    While those around you crawled
They crawled out of the woodwork
And they whispered into your brain
They set you on the treadmill
And they made you change your name
And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never knowing who to cling to
    When the rain set in
And I would have liked to have known you
But I was just a kid
Your candle burned out long before
    Your legend ever did
    Loneliness was tough
The toughest role you ever played
    Hollywood created a superstar
And pain was the price you paid
    Even when you died
Oh the press still hounded you
All the papers had to say
Was that Marilyn was found in the nude
    Goodbye Norma Jean
From the young man in the 22nd row
Who sees you as something as more than sexual
More than just our Marilyn Monroe

I so love this song.. She was SO beloved and still is.. it is so sad that the many legends that have died at such young ages far before their time... and so many of those individuals so often felt during their lives that they would he forgotten and that they would not be remembered.. Similar with Elvis Presley.. he had said in interviews about how he wanted to do so much more and he was so afraid that he would die before he could be MORE and felt he would not be remembered..and he as well is still remembered and a legend.. same as the beautiful Norm Jean.. she had also made statements in interviews about wanting to do more and being so sure she would be forgotten...I wish she and all the other young people that died far to soon had a way of knowing during their short lives just HOW much of am impact they did make in the world and how they are still so MANY years after their leaving this earth they are STILL beloved and still remembered even by those born for after their deaths.. Her, Princess Diana, Elvis.. the list does to on.. this is such an amazing tribute song.. all of it is moving but for me personally I felt the line of him saying how he saw her as something so much more than sexual was a huge and profound statement considering that she WAS often seen only as a "sex symbol" while she was alive and she always wanted to be seen as so much more than that... hope she is able to rest easy knowing that she IS SO MUCH MORE than just that and IS REMEMBERED now as MUCH MORE than just that.

A dedication and a great masterpiece from one of the very top musicians and singer performers of all time…and maybe the best in his category-time based on the number of “his-created masterpieces”. and he was just producing one after the other….with the great voice that as a young man he had….and all his credits and achievements in music are …undeniable…….and now…….there is no one or “replacement”. on the horizon….

I'm not an Elton John fan, but I'm going to have to admit that this is a befitting tribute to the most beautiful actress who has ever lived.
    Great song. Great song.
    Well done Elton.
However, I would like to add this.
I found it rather surprising that this song was " recycled" and used as a tribute to the late Princess Diana.
Why? Why couldn't a new tribute song have been written for her and Candle in the wind remain unique to Ms Monroe?
Don't get me wrong, I'm not bagging anyone I'm just curious.

Marylin should never have gone near president Kennedy, that was her downfall

It didn’t help her, but that wasn’t the only wrong influences she had. Frank Sinatra claimed her as one of his girlfriends too…

@user-ez5bq6zb7s - Marylin was Marilyn's "DOWNFALL". Kennedy just helped it along.

Who does these lyrics?! It's not "you crawled out of the woodwork" like Marilyn was a roach. It's "crawled out of the woodwork," referring to "those around her that crawled."

I don't like this song, I found it hypocritical. Marylin Monroe was anything but defenseless, and she ruined her life herself.

As we mourn our Queen of England this song stands to mark the terrible loss that we also feel for the lesser born amongst us-and to give them praise in life as well as death.
