- This song and video are nuts! Embrace the chaos with me for my FIRST TIME HEARING "Let's Talk About Menkata Cottelee" by Maximum The Hormone.
This band and song was recommended to me by a painter and decorator who shares a love of Japanese metal music with me. He kind of warned me in advance, but nothing could prepare me for this!

Yeah - I read up about this preparing for the video. He looks great and his health is number one. If the fans would rather he be overweight, unhealthy and die, then they clearly aren't real fans.
I never have any idea what Maximum the Hormone songs are about. I feel like they're all inside jokes.

Some background to the video.
The girl at the start is a fan reminiscing about 'the old' MtH. The first song playing in the background with the greenscreen dancing is 'Koi no Sperm' (love of sperm). The second song with clips of the band is 'Chisana kimi no te' (Your tiny hands). The band had taken a hiatus whilst the drummer (and singer in the gym parts) Nao had children. When they came back they trolled the fans with that song, saying that now that Nao had kids, they would be making softer, radio friendly 'pop punk'. This can be seen in the video for 'Maximum the Hormone', the actual comeback track 🙂

Around the same time or shortly thereafter, Maximum the Ryo-kun (the guitarist) was having health problems (gout and early signs of Diabetes), and was advised to lose weight. Some fans didn't like this, and wanted the old cuddly Ryo-kun back. This video is the response 🙂

SoaD was less of an inspiration as both of the bands started around the same time. They were more inspired by bands like Red Hot Chili Peppers and Rage against the Machine. Btw they JUST dropped another song, you should definitely check it out!
Yeah - I can definitely hear both of those bands influences in there, but the SOAD similarities, apart from the J-Pop chorus, are what instantly comes to mind. Nothing wrong with that. I love SOAD!!! Definitely need to get my teeth into some more MTH. It's frigging mental!
It pains me as to how many "reactors" to music who cannot identify a disco beat. The two bits with Nao the drummer are not J-pop or K-pop, it is disco. Come to think of it, all music is ultimately disco.

The woman who sang the pop insert is the drummer of the band Nao. In Maximum Hormon all are singers, with different voices, and in different styles.
She's also one of the band members sister isn't she?
@@melvinthinks Yes. Guitarist Ryo is her younger brother. Nao is the group's founder and manager. The group was created by her and frontman Daitsuke (screamer, growler, rapper), who is also a drummer by the way.
I didn't realise she was the drummer/pop singer in the band until yourself and several others pointed it out. You can't see her face properly whilst she is on the drumkit in the video, so I immediately thought it was someone not in the band when the J-Pop chorus kicks in!

@@melvinthinks gotta love PRS guitars for heavy. I get lots of Tool vibes from them. Rage against the machine and SOAD too. They have a cool soft punk style in their music too which is fascinating.
100% SOAD, which I read they are heavily influenced by.
Everyone always compares MtH and SoaD, the interesting one is that both bands formed and grew at the same time, just on different sides of the Pacific
But they have also cited SOAD as one of their major influences. Hence the valid comparisons.
@melvinthinks oh definitely, it's just interesting how it isn't just older bands that can have influence on a style, but can help a band see the way they want to focus on in future

MTH is one of my favorite bands of all time, and is usually the "vibe checker" I use on people when getting to know them lol. I usually describe them as "genre whiplash". Truly unique and unapologetically themselves with no room for compromise, and I respect the absolute fuck out of them 😂

But im very sure they were inspired by another Japanese band called The Mad Capsule Markets. They even have a song called "Abara Capsule Markets Bob" which sounds like a Mad Capsule song.

@@melvinthinks Two good choices, there is a large talent pool of musicianship and creativity in Japan. Hitsujibungaku and Regal Lily are also really good bands. They are more of the Alternative/Grunge sound Hitsujibungaku just released a cover of the Shaun the Sheep theme somg a few days ago that is just so happy! Regal Lily's Twilight Ash is soo good. Both of them have a great catalog of music
Definitely agree with you about the Japanese scene. Weirdly, it was Dreamcatcher that started the ball rolling - who aren't even Japanese! lol But then I found Lovebites, Band-Maid, Nemophila, Ningen Isu & MTH. And I've not even scratched the surface! And now I've got to add these other bands you've recommended to my ever expanding list! 🤣 Not enough hours in the day to hear all this great music!
