Resonance Ensemble Presents: PORTLAND PROTESTS

PORTLAND PROTESTS - March 18-19, 2023 - Led by guest conductor Shohei Kobayashi, Resonance offered an evening of vocal music and poetry in dialogue with visual art and photography of Portland’s racial justice protests of 2020-2021, joined by a string quartet from Portland’s Fear No Music Ensemble, and concluding with a special Q&A.
The program included works by Margaret Bonds, David Lang, and Joel Thompson alongside newly-commissioned poetry and music by acclaimed local poets and composers A. Mimi Sei, Resonance Ensemble Poet-in-Residence S. Renee Mitchell, spoken word artist Vin Shambry, and composers Judy A. Rose, Kimberly Osberg, and Fear No Music’s Kenji Bunch, Audiences were invited to consider and intentionally remember our city’s past, collectively grieve, and dare to envision more just futures.
Completing the experience, selected scenes from Portland-based media artists Jodi Darby, Julie Perini and Erin Yanke's powerful documentary: Arresting Power were shown throughout the program.
A panel discussion will follow, inviting conversation and reflection.
