Monteverdi's music, in its purity of line, seems like the dawn of the miracle of the music of the later greats of music. Monteverdi certainly belongs in their company as well.

Monteverdi for me epitomized the greatest composer of his day. The beauty of his combining of the melodic/harmonic elements to express deep human emotions is jaw dropping..stunning. There would be no bel canto...no Verdi without him. One of the highlights of my life was to visit his grave in Venice to pay silent homage and prayer for his eternal rest.

Frankly, he epitomizes the greatest composer of any age; he certainly epitomizes my own soul! And those human emotions you speak of he can turn on a dime. My tomb stone will say, "I miss music the most" -- and it's Monteverdi of whom I was thinking. ... That said, I don't think this is the best interpretation, though: give me that baton....!!

There is no opera my ear can tolerate. I have no taste for long vocal solos or shrieking sopranos. However, the only opera I can gladly listen to, is L' Orpheo. Composed by this man. Including some heart touching solos but also choral pieces of such magnificent beauty, my spine rises every time I listen to.
If anyone could grasp the idea of a musician with unearthly talent, It would definitely be Claudio Monteverdi. The pastor who had an ancient Greek themed opera held in a catholic church.
Sometimes people at these ages seemed to be so ahead in ideas than now.

Exactly, Stelios! My wife loves opera but I, like you, cannot tolerate it. EXCEPT, as you say, L'Orpheo. Opera began and ended there! [OK, maybe one or two of Mozart, but even there I will take Monteverdi -- to the grave and beyond.] And his madrigals...Oh My!

C'est parce que sa musique a un profond ancrage terrestre qu'elle est si apte, si propice aux ascensions. Monteverdi est réellement incarné.

No, madrigal is the typical genre of Renaissment, but these madrigals are part of the last period of madrigals, and they are composed following the baroque style. In Renaissment (and in the earlier Monteverdi's madrigals) madrigals were composed for many voices and also often without instruments): these are made for less singers (often also for only one, as you can hear), according to the baroque tendencies (think for example about the earliest italian operas, like Euridice by Jacopo Peri); they are composed for many instruments. The revolution of madrigals (the last period before their "death") is in these madrigals nearly complete. In the eight book of madrigals by Monteverdi madrigals are completely made following baroque style :)

From the perspective of the great modern scholar María Rika Maniates or of the Monteverdi brothers In1607 themselves, Monteverdi represents the Late Manneristic era, Mannerism being synonymous with the “seconds practica” or second practice in which they include De Rore and Wert, and might have included Nicola Vicentino with his assertion that any dissonance or unusual melodic interval may be justified to express the emotions of a text. Book 7 is an interesting context to reflect on Monteverdi’s mastery of Renaissance counterpoint as a resource in his modern works like the concerted madrigals of Book 7. This isn’t such an original analysis since an anthology of articles called The Monteverdi Companion takes this line of analysis, and I was reading it back in my graduate school days of 1973.
