No I didn't, you just need to brush it with oil but if you want you can make holes. Try it.

No, it won't. You have to dry it completely before putting it back in cupboard.

After boiling, the water turns yellow and smells like cooked bamboo. Is this a problem? I'm concerned that the steam coming from this and going thru the food.

Sorry for late replying. No its not an issue because water dries out too. If you still feel reluctant you can place a wire and place your steamer on top. But do add a minute or two of extra steaming because bamboo will not be in direct contact with water. I hope that helps 😊
