  • This small tree is a Hardy Orange, Poncirus trifoliata. It is also known as the Flying Dragon, probably speaking to its unusual grow pattern with its tendency to zig-zag as it branches , producing large and curved thorns as it does so. The fruit is commonly reported as astringent and sour, probably a good deal more so than your average lemon. While I have not tried it for myself yet, hopefully I will this year, as the tree is finally in flower for the first time! This video I introduce this very interesting tree and describe what I am currently doing with id, and my intentions for it heading into the future.

Lol good luck covering the curly version for a spring frost. Lol i ripped the sheet to shredds that said the curly version will kill you if you fell into it. The original species has thorns but they arent deadly hooks like the other

Thanks! yeah some types of this tree can indeed have some pretty gnarly thorns for sure! Good to know, maybe using some sort of dome like protection around the trees that could be staked to ground at base if necessary might work I wonder. So long as the fabric over the dome doesn't actually touch the tree. So far I have not had to worry about a late Spring frost damaging this tree. But you share a good point and I will keep this in mind heading into the future, Thanks!

Apple trees are also not native and judging by the extent of their presence could also be considered an invasive. Ha!

A very solid point! And...we are helping them! Same could probably be said of lawn grass. At the end of the day I suppose its all about what type of value we put on these different plants.

I couldn't find a worthy way of disposing of the barbwire-bush branches so I refuse to grow them. They're sour & imo you should just setup a winter-greenhouse with climate-controls to have some evergreen citrus plants, I'm in Zone 9b & I'll never buy a citrus for this climate ever again b/c they never survive.
