You have no idea how much I enjoyed the tour you gave of your home. I loved learning so much on the subject of old Japanese houses from you. Thank you.
Old Japanese houses are fine save the traditional Japanese toilets which are none but a curse. You may wish to renew your tatamis once in a while, which is a must for an owner of this sort of houses. It would be a challenge to cover 17 rooms, though.
The house is a true gem. Characteristics remind me of older homes in this part o the American south. You are so correct with the bedroom verses value in the United States. With banking set up to support this model, new houses are build to match the loans that are available. I wonder if the changes in Japan are more of a reflection of banking/loan systems as well?
I love these older homes. The craftsmanship and design surpasses the modern ones. Thank you for sharing your home and expertise.

Why do Japanese typically lay bricks or cement blocks in a straight grid with vertical grout lines aligned (
very interesting
Living as a gaijin in Japan, I can empathize with how many people want to come to my house, but never invite me to theirs. It gets tiresome.
