    Love League but I live in the USA and I can tell you that Rugby League in the Midwest is almost none existent. Union on the other hand is starting to gain ground. A lot of that is due to the work union has put in to preparing the USA for hosting the 2031 world cup. They created a domestic league and a specific team to develop USA players. The promotion for the rugby Sevens here is growing. the popularity of Ilona Maher and the success of the women's team in the Olympics is huge. There is a local youth club in Chicago (where I live) that just got a new indoor and outdoor ground and kids are starting to sign up for it. The All Blacks have been doing tours and youth camps for years and when I talk to people about rugby (league or union) 9/10 will respond "oh yeah like the all blacks" They sold out Soldier Field when they played the USA, 60,000 people showed up. The NRL game sold about 40,000 tickets in a stadium that holds 65,000. If League is going to grow in the US market they have a lot more work to do then showing up in Vegas and putting on some games to collect gambling money. Most Americans had no idea it was going on. To be honest most Americans dont really have an interest in watching unless they feel invested. There's basketball, baseball, foot ball, hockey and soccer and Union is starting to make a dent in the market, if you want to sell your sport League is going to have to work on markets outside of the NRL. That means investing in international Rugby League.

      Happens in Basketball and hockey too. It’s not just that International RL is shit, it’s also that one country and league is completely dominant. The NRL is RL’s NBA/NHL. If you are the best player in the NRL, you are the best player in the world. If you win NRL premierships and Origin series, you have nothing left to prove.

  • @JaimieRain

    I grew up watching league in the 90's and the international game was great then. I'm remembering many 3 match series' between the Kiwi's and Kangaroo's in June/July, you know, when people ACTUALLY care, not the latter half of spring when everyone's switched off and players who have had long seasons opt out. We had a Lions tour in 1992, and they played NRL teams mid week, then came over here to New Zealand for a 2 match series (it was an epic series believe me). The game won't grow until emphasis and passion that is put into State or Origin is given to the International game.

      I remember being a teenager in NZ in the 1990s. We must’ve lived within different circles, because I only remember league being seen as a joke. And especially the international “tests”. It was always one-sided and in one test (in dumpy Palmerston North) the match ball got stolen.

      @danieleyre8913 4 місяці тому +4

      Well said.
      It is amazing how these Aussie league-ies are so alienated from reality and the wider world. And they don’t fathom just what a nothing sport league is in the bigger picture. Now I’m not saying that they should give up on their game (as much as it’s not my cup of tea). But just that they have no perspective on the wider world. It’s really not very big at all in England, it’s only played in the old coal belt and it’s slowly dying out (to association football, not Union). In New Zealand it’s really only big in South Auckland, West Auckland and among gang Māoris. And it’s played among some communities in southern France, where it is also dying out like in England. And there’s Papua New Guinea, the Cook Islands, and a lot of other insignificant pacific Islands.
      It has almost NO presence in Wales, Ireland nor Scotland. And as good as none in continental Europe beyond southern France. Almost none in South Africa nor the rest of the African continent. None in the Americas. And none in Asia.
      It’s only big time in two Australian states. And Papua New Guinea. And I can’t see that changing much.

    • @LomuHabana
      @LomuHabana 3 місяці тому +2

      Most people in continental Europe, even in France outside of French Catalonia, are unaware that there are two different kinds of Rugby. People here usually only know Rugby Union. Some Rugby die hards in continental Europe have heard or read about the fact that there is a second type of Rugby, but don’t anything about it. I have been to 3 WC games 2023 in France, talked to all sorts of European Rugby fans. No one knew anything about Rugby League. And I was there at the time of the NRL Grand Final and the SL play offs.
      It’s funny that the Netherlands are 12th Internationally. I am fluent in Dutch and follow Dutch sports, watch Dutch television, have a bunch of Dutch friends and visits the country every once in a while. Before I watched Leaguei’s video, I was completely unaware of the fact that league was played at all there. Union? Yes, pretty big niche sport actually. I have seen games on television and according to Wikipedia, there are 25k registered Union players in the Netherlands. But league? Turns out, it is as tiny as it gets. There are 4-5 clubs. And that’s it. I bet you that most of the players are originally form traditional league areas. And that’s the world’s number 12?! Tells you everything.
      Outside of it’s traditional strong holds, Rugby league is internationally comparable to AFL/Aussie rules. As tiny as it gets.

    • @galinor7

      Why bother? A tier two comp isn't a world cup, just a mino competition for poor teams. The Rugby Union World cup had loads of blow outs, it was considered a success and will be expanded. This mini world cup is a shoe in, just to not cause problems for the NRL. It's irrelevant.

    I get it's important to showcase a high quality game/s, but it's honestly entertaining watching semi pros competing against each other as well, just have a look at countries competing each other on youtube or the lower grades in Oz.
    So many of these other tier countries that just can't go full pro nor provide top quality talent to NRL and Super league teams can provide plenty of talent to compete in a semi pro/amateur world comp, maybe the winner progresses to the world cup. Surely the NRL can help the IRL fund this, these players wont demand much and it'll improve the landscape of the international game long term, it shouldn't be short sighted and only be about immediate returns.
    The olympics is full of semi pros to this day and grew, even the soccer world cup and Euros grew to this stage from semi pros partaking.

      You serious? They are pushing the NFL extremely hard internationally. They regularly have games in other countries and invest in infrastructure and programs abroad. American football has become a pretty solid niche/minor sport in many countries, especially in Europe, with good participation, decent competitions and a solid fan base. Flag football (the no contact versions) will be an Olympic sport from 2028 onwards.
