    This seems so obvious, but schools still wonder why kids come to school at 7 am unenergetic and half concious after spending most afternoons forced to do something and having like 5+ assignments due the next day with a sprinkle of tests throughout the week. Then have the decency to berate the children on their laziness. 🤦‍♀️

To make it worse - it was PE, so we looked like a group of unmotivated zombies running around with a ball then. If it was supposed to make us more energetic for other classes, it didn't work at all.

    I grew up in England and for me secondary school started at 9 am and went until 4. And then I moved to America and my high school started at 7:25 am and ended at around 12 or 1, I can’t remember exactly. Either way, I noticed I was just absolutely exhausted with the earlier start time, and would always nap for at least an hour after coming home, when I never took naps when I lived in England. I thought it was awesome that I’d get more hours to myself in the day with the earlier school day finish, but it makes you so tired that you end up actually losing time.

    As a former teen (27 now) who became suicidal due to these issues.. i still dont understand why schools dont adapt to the biological needs of the youngsters.
    Long story incoming;
    Your teen years are some of the most important years when it comes to personality-, brain-, social-, mental- & physical development. Sleep is ESSENTIAL for healthy, functional adolescents.
    I only fell asleep around 4:00, had to get up at 6:00 and travel 1,5 hr for school. It was utter hell. I was shit at tests and learning due to the sleep deprivation. On the odd days that school started in the afternoon, i suddenly excelled at tests and learning and i was "a whole different person" according to the teachers and peers. There were a few months when school only started around 12:30 due to teacher shortages, and at the end of that period i got the advice to go to higher ed levels, from practical+theory to advanced theory
    (we work with different educational levels within high schools here; practical, practical + theory, advanced theory, & theory + science).
    But as soon as the shortage was fixed and school started at 08:00 again, my grades dropped from 9's & 10's to pathetic 6's. They still wondered why I "wasn't doing my best like before" whilst completely ignoring my sleep deprivation problems. 🤦🏻
    Anyhoo, i dropped out in 1st year of uni since i became psychotic and suicidal. Had to be admitted in MH hospital for 2,5 yrs to become somewhat stable again.
    Later heard that 7 other classmates went through the same struggles, and 3 others unfortunately succeeded in canceling themselves.. This is an issue that shouldn't be ignored any longer.
    The safety & stability of our young ones are at high risk!

      @@Urmapleleaf Those "boring subjects" are NOT the problem but more how they teach them
      I mean first of all dead languages are almost never REALLY dead (there are still tons of people who speak Latin which I think is the stereotypically the most taught "dead" one) but also learning a second language is probably (aside from adequate sleep, which school ALSO doesn't allow for) the single greatest thing you can do for your brain
      It's like chess but if it was 10000% more effective
      People DON'T use math but they absolutely SHOULD be able to. This isn't so much an issue of "WhAt If YoU dOn'T hAvE a CaLcUlAtOr?" but more just getting used to thinking. People have no ability to remember information or think for themselves anymore cause they can look everything up. It's just good for your brain and your ability to think to do it yourself
      All 3 years of High School English we didn't even learn English it was just Black History by Liberal teachers. If you're liberal go for it (I think you're wrong but it's your right to choose a side) but don't try to push that on my kids. I THINK this one is more of a anecdotal issue than a systematic one but I'm still salty about it cause it wasn't until I graduated that I realized ... English/linguistics is a REALLY cool subject

The same goes for other sensitive issues like mental health, its really easy to dismiss any idea of change in habits and behaviour of people.

      It's a flaw of the culture that we see not wanting to have unnecessary difficulty as being lazy. Suffering, hardship, & hard work are guarantees in life, yes, but that doesn't mean that we can't make it easier where we can. Is it lazy to use a power drill instead of a screwdriver? Of course not, that's just being smart to achieve the goals of saving time and bodily wear & tear. Why should something as essential as sleep be viewed any differently? That exists mainly because our brain doesn’t focus on struggles from the past. If we dwell on problems and those negative feelings form the past, we won’t be able to focus as much on the problems we are currently facing. So, most likely, they did just forget how bad it was

    this video is just a cope for lazy teens who are trying to come up with an excuse for not going to sleep early and getting a full nights rest, this video is complete bs and how i know its bs is because i (a teen) struggled to get a full nights sleep, recently i found out that it wasn't some dumb circadian rhythm that was stopping me from falling asleep, its because right before i went to sleep i would be staring at my screen and then i wonder why i cant fall asleep, also a lack of discipline in my life was also a big factor, stop lying to yourselves this video is harmful in so many ways, its telling people that their bad habits aren't something that they're in control of and can change but instead saying its due to some dumb circadian rhythm that they cant control, the research on it by the way is questionable at best, by saying this they're removing all free will from the equation and giving people an excuse to live like slobs, don't believe these lies, you are in control of your life and you can do something about it

    • @braincuriosities
      @braincuriosities 6 місяців тому

      So if I understand well, decades of research and science aren't true because you used your phone?
      There can be a discipline dimention, of course, but the study of Gideon Dunster showed literally that there's a limit to how much teens will stay on their phone, and that limit is driven by biological factors.
      Besides, your experience does not discredit the video. You could have been staring at your phone for hours BECAUSE you didn't manage to fall asleep, and then growing up that reversed.
      Finally, research on it is very solid and chronotypes have been known for years, there is even a genetic component in how chronotypes function and an evolutionary explanation.
      Finally, not everything is black and white, there can be behavior and biology interacting, just because you disagree with something it doesn't automatically make that thing a lie

    • @sprouts
      @sprouts  6 місяців тому +2

      Sure, just how excessive screen watching before bedtime and lack of discipline could be reasons for teens to get a proper full night's sleep. Change in their circadian rhythm is as well. It's biology! It can also be that the impluse for screen watching before bedtime is an outcome of the change in circadian rhythm.
      Being aware of our biological changes only makes it likely for schools to implement better strategies and for teenagers to better control their impulse and organize their sleep.

    • @braincuriosities
      @braincuriosities 6 місяців тому

      @sprouts there's also the changes in executive functioning due to asymmetrical development of the prefrontal cortex that leads to less impulse control and more revenge bedtime procrastination in teens

    I absolutely think that this is a wonderful idea! I also personally think that the entire school system needs to be completely overhauled anyways as to not only give more information, updated information, but also help its students not only reach their full potential, but also help them realize what that potential might be, how to apply it to the real world, and how to function in a modern society. We can clearly see that a blanket curriculum is not the most effective solution for our schools, worse still it seems to actually be doing worse now than it has ever been before (thanks to several factors which I will not get into here). The current system by and large hasn't been updated in any meaningful way since its inception around 150 years ago in the Industrial Revolution, wherein its primary purpose was to raise the literacy rate and move people directly into factory positions. Now that the settings have for the most part changed a small section of what is taught has changed, but the underlying system remains the same.
