ABOUT THIS VIDEO
I was so happy when my buddy Greg Phillinganes surprised me by jumping into the ARP Foundation Booth in the middle of my talk at NAMM 2024. I'm always ready to turn on a dime and adapt when the unexpected happens, especially when the unexpected means Greg is bringing a wave of energy my way. I'm confident you'll be very pleased if you stick around for this entire video. It's a rare opportunity to receive a first hand demonstration about how to play a synthesizer keyboard from a master who is most likely the most heard keyboard player in the world. Greg lays out definable things that make his parts funky, the role of "good taste" when playing fills, picking your moments for parts to enter and go away, single trigger keyboard technique, trills, palm slides, ribbon pitch bends and more....so glad to spread the joy that illuminates from this one-of-kind musician and beautiful person!

Greg is one of the greatest musicians of a generation
Mom, wake up! Anthony Marinelli just dropped another video!
Yo momma don’t know what dropping a video mean…
I live on my own and when I see an upload I'm staying 'yeah!' out loud and there's no one there who would benefit from me shouting out. 😄
SO COOL!! Thank you, Anthony and Greg!!!!
Greg Phillinganes is one of my favorite keyboard players, I've followed him throughout his career with Stevie, Anita Baker, Donald Fagen, and Michael Jackson, just to name a few. Looking forward to seeing what you guys put together. As always thank you Anthony for the content you and your team put together.
This is pure education, Greg needs a channel or just lecture at some music school. He’s knowledge needs to be catalogued 😀😀😀😀😀
THIS is what I use and praise synthesizers for, it's not just 2 fellas on a 2600: it's THE synth duo everyone should listen to and learn from.
Never stop playing !!!❤
You are very convincing. I shall heed the lessons of ebony, ivory and the mighty 2600. I've wanted to learn proper patching on a virtual classic synth and this is the catalyst to start this new phase of my sonic legacy. I studied under the tiny screens and convoluted user manuals from the mighty Roland and now shall put my skills to the test. 🙏
This is mandatory studying for all striving keyboard players and musicians. Love his insights & information
In the 80's I had subscriptions to every singe music magazine like Keyboard, Electronic Musician, Rolling Stone and I was always reading to pick up tips on how the musicians played and came up with those great songs. Thanks for your channel it takes me all the way back to those times and I am still just excited to learn new things as I was back then when I had more hair.🎹🎹🎶🎶🎵
NAMM - Neato Anthony Marinelli Music. 👏👏👏👏👏
I just feel like Anthony Marinelli is a real genuine, kind and creative person. Always inquisitive and comes from love.
I’ve never seen a better description of single trigger mode phrasing. 👍
These two should do a worldwide tour. "Thriller for the Masses"
Two universes of music in the starry sky tell us about their illuminating abilities to bring music to life with soul and spirit. Abilities that seem superhuman seem unattainable. But on the contrary, the two beacons are so close to the people, open and humane, which is why they are true superstars for so many without any airs or role models. If all people with extraordinary talents were so open to sharing their knowledge, it is hard to imagine what potential PEOPLE COULD HAVE TOGETHER and NOT AGAINST EACH OTHER!!! THX SO MUTCH FOR YOUR HUMAN BEING!!!
Anthony, you are doing such great, heartfelt work. Thank you. I am a well-known Australian keyboardist and Greg is one of my "main guys" for a long time. Thank you, Sam McNally.
It still gives me the goosebumps to see two wonderfully kind musicians sharing their knowledge from working with the greatest, who made such an impact on pop music! Thank you Anthony and thank you Greg...
So you glad you caught this because I missed it while at #NAMM ! Thanks Dante, Anthony and Greg!
I simply cannot believe that happened.
Oh man Anthony, your work here is amazing
These two need their own show or podcast.
Excellent content!.
Spending some minutes with tou guys is "invaluable".
It's all about sharing, thank you so much for your passion.
This is amazing! You're such a talented man!! Wish i could be there too😢 sending you much love from Greece!!
We are all soooo dman lucky. Thank you sir
Super cool! You can just hear the difference when Greg's playing. And as a recovering woodwind player I appreciated that explanation for the single-trigger mode. That's what made the concept really click in my head.
thanks again for such a great information resource. big fan here
Loved this. Greg is the man.
Here we have two of most unknown… well known artists of our time explaining sounds they created and played on the most selling album of all time. What a treat! Please come to Germany, to Frankfurt Musik Messe this April🙌
Great news will look forward to seeing it.. Lovely to see Greg PhIllinganes again too. Thanks 👍🏻
Greg is the best ❤❤❤❤❤
Three of my favorite keyboardist: Greg, Phil, and Ganes. 😜
I'm learning lots , my first ever talk box is turning up tomorrow, and this will help me with keyboard playing thank you guys for uploading this video❤
Also I saw Greg at London Wembley Stadium on keys in 1988 Michael jackson Bad Concert, was amazing
love this so much
Thank you both, this was awesome
That's awesome!
Great vid! Love Greg too!
Thanks so much! This was amazing!
So cool that Dina had Anthony come by for a demo but pure kismet that Greg swings by to make the demo the complete package. Great vid and what U-Toob needs to be more like, more often.
I would be insanely jelly I missed the raffle if I hadn’t just bought a 2600M recently. It reminded me, though, that I promised Dina a donation to the foundation when I bought one because there isn’t any licensing fees transferred on new Korg ARP gear back to the ARP Foundation.
Killer stuff Anthony
🌸🌸🌸
amazing!
My keyboard heroes! 🤩
thank you for sharing these pearls!
Greg is a legend
Greg Phillinganes is deep!
Thank you for this wonderful Information Anthony!!
This is awesome stuff Anthony! God bless!
Another amazing video. I'll be right back just need to go do some patching now. Thank you 🔥
💛💙
Always great to see and hear the one and only Greg Phillinganes!
Greg's basslines are just epic !!!
Big thanks for the palm-slide tip ...
From MJ to Toto to David Gilmour.
Frkn legend.
Can't wait Anthony!
Thanks, Anthony - another great video, and it is especially so for people just learning this stuff. I wish I had the kind of resources you're supplying on this channel back in the day, when I was healthy and just learning about synths (Buchla 100-series modular and ARP 2500 and 2600 being my first ones). You're always driving home key lessons that used to take people years to figure out, unless one found, like Greg, miracle teachers like Stevie Wonder.
This is so great to be able to watch and listen to people like you who were the hidden heroes behind the music that shaped our lives when we were teenagers and young adults. Back then we were focused on the main star, and gave very little attention and credits to all the other people involved in the music we listened to. Thank you for taking the time to make these incredible videos Anthony.
I really appreciate that you're doing this and 'getting back the band together' so to speak. I'm just a general music listener and a consumer for so many years and getting to watch you work and seeing the magic behind it and how it really was magic, and how so much of the sound design/performance is taken for granted. It's been a genuine treat to watch what you did and hearing the story behind it and the ways it was done.
Right on Anthony, thanks for sharing this! I've never met Greg but he comes off like such a positive life force and he's such an amazing player. He's great to watch in the Spectrasonics videos.
It just so happens that I was learning about single-trigger set-ups.
Thank you for covering it!
Two great men, great players. Thanks!
This is magic!
Talking Book was mindblowing for me, and I somehow always felt a strong urge to reconstruct / deconstruct it and learn from it.
To see Greg lift the curtain on these techniques is an absolute gift!
And the fact that this is all off the cuff is just insane! You guys make a great comedy duo :D
I had the pleasure of seeing Michael Jackson live twice and Greg Phillinganes with him once. We viewers owe you our gratitude for having a look into the kitchen. Everytime I watch I learn something and it's not just about music... it's about friendship, mutual respect and magical chemistry! Didn't you meet Mr. Wonder? He was there. I saw a video of him visiting the SWAM booth.
Thank Antony for the parallel between synths and brass instruments.
The term that you are looking for in order to describe the articulation is "slurring" the note from one to the other without tonguing again.
Great appreciation for everything you do, can't wait to see the video with you and Greg recreating the songs from Thriller!
Anthony: I LOVE your videos. And your INCREDIBLE skill shows so naturally that is just amazing and endearing. Thank you!!!
Anthony, what a gift !! Thank you 😊
Nothing but finesse. You guys make it look so easy!
the fill at 5:48 is truly incredible lol
Love this! Thanks, Anthony. Thanks, Greg.
What a wealth of great info in just a few minutes, thank you for this!
That was coooool Legendary!
Cool! 🎼🎹🎶🎵
Hi Anthony, thx again for this great video with Greg. Loved it !
Any idea when the one with all the instruments will be available ? Can't wait to see it now ... ;-)
♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️ I say: do the Greggy
one of the best concerts I have ever been to was Stevie. if you get the chance take the whole family
Hi Anthony !! What a great channel you have and what a great guy I m 110% convinced you are. Thank you for sharing your brilliant history and knowledge in such a passionate way, that you always make my day when a video is released. You made history, and your love for synthesis shines through you. Cheers from Brazil.
Thank you for sharing your passion! Fantastic information and great tips.
Very special indeed
Great video demonstrations! Thank you Anthony!
Single/multi trigger is a feature on the later 3620 ARP 2600 keyboard. Don't think it was around when Maybe Your Baby was cut. Wonder if TONTO was modded or if that one was just done with Moog components? Very cool to hear Greg work it out on Stevie bass stuff, and thank you for bringing up the trill Anthony!
Looking forward to the Margouleff episode and I continue to sincerely appreciate you sharing your knowledge with us! I have always marveled at the way you can relate things perfectly to laymen and seasoned pros.
Fun stuff and great things to know! Gonna be looking for the Thriller deep dive. Nice to learn about Greg and see him in action.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Great timing! Greg just shows up, unbelievable. Also, the intro and outro tune is awesome - can you please do an album with guest synth players? I'd trip over my wallet to give you money for that.
Please recreate the Victory album too !
@6:30 nice demo of trigger mode on phrasing
@9:50 expl of stevie wonder cs80 ribbon hammer-on trill. can do same & more w/ touchpads like the old korg z1. years ago tried to explain the concept to carson day @sequential to move beyond pitch/mod wheels - no traction even though he obviously used the tempest strips
This slider sound on the 2600 sounds so much like the effect on superfly sister from Mj on Blood on the DF. Anthony Greg, were you involved in that song ?
Cant seem to find that Thriller recreation video?🙏
Ah they didn’t bring the Froggie keyboard, I bet the crowd would have loved that!
!!FIRST!! 😅😂
He and Donald Osborne look like they could be brothers!
I think UA-cam needs an Anthony Marinelli - Alex Ball collab (Or better yet, a little series!)
👀🤫
If you want to watch Stevie do that keyboard pitch bend technique go to this video and watch from 3:50 ua-cam.com/video/t0dyjatxWAk/v-deo.htmlsi=liD8lYVYhvtnDvY-
I cannot find the recreation thriller video for the life of me. All I find is shorts. If you promote these types of videos please link them in the description. Just waisted an hour and even searched re creating thriller with your name and Greg’s and still couldn’t find it.
A Man called "Mouse"... nasty!!!
Maybe that guy behind Anthony could get a little closer........... Cringy... Give the talent some space as a priority over your phone recording....
Greg is like Steve Lukather or Mike Landau....they are in thousands of records!!!!
