Congratulations on buying your own place!! We have 20 acres in the central valley of California. We tried planting some trees on the 12 acres that the cattle are on after we put the cattle in. I should have planted the trees first. The cattle destroyed them because we didn't have any way to protect the trees. We tried steel posts, wood posts and wire. But grass inside was better than outside. So establish trees as soon as possible. Your story is awesome!

In Western Pennsylvania if you go to the emergency room at the hospital, a automatic test for Lyme disease because of the likelihood of being bitten by Ticks. Your idea with the gates in the driveway is a good idea and it will work. If you have a crawl space under the house I would suggest that you lay cloth in the bottom covered and put some sand over the cloth. It will keep from the problem we had with mold in the house when we got married in 1965...
