This is the 18th episode in a UA-cam Series Pros and Cons by a Piercer. I wish I saw this in the earlier stages of my monroe piercing. The amount of swelling I had in my piercing was so concerning. I wish I knew swelling was normal.
It is normal to see swelling and your piercer should have told you what to expect.
The thing with swelling is its often hard to know the difference between normal and when to be concern. I plan to add a video on the subject in the future. So, how long did the swelling last for you?

I can't quite remember but my family seems to remember it lasting from a couple weeks to a month. I had some puss issues as well but they didn't seem too concerned about it since it wasn't yellow.
The welling was ridiculous though. They gave me the second largest post in the shop and the bead started embedding itself into my skin. They changed my piercing three times within the span of the first week having it because nothing worked for it. (The longest post wasn't even long enough so for a few days I had a barbell in it 😂).
I always seem to have clients complaining about the post being too long. Mainly because it looks like overkill. However I've learned over the years starting with 3/8 to 1/2 post and then downsizing early is better than dealing with a post that's too short.
When the post isn't long enough, it creates this prefect storm where the swelling only seems to increase and prolong. It swells beyond the jewelry length, the body considers it abuse and the piercing just swells more. It's a vicious cycle.
I'm guessing one of the reasons that you saw swelling longer than usual is the abuse and having to change the jewelry so many times. The only time I will suggest changing the jewelry if it's getting caught on teeth or causing issues. Especially if the piercing is still swelling.
Jewelry sizing is not an exact science. I've had some clients that due to their health, diet, habit, etc... Just swell more than normal. There is no way to predict this but the standard is 1/8 or larger than the width of the piercing. This is especially true of oral piercings. Some piercing that are less prone to swelling like navel piercings, don't require that wide of jewelry.

Oh yeah definitely! There's some scaring and flaky skin (probably from the embedding of the bead) but I'm definitely almost out of the storm. Thank you again!
Thank you - this is exactly what I needed! What are your thoughts on bioflex jewellery and what is the minimum length that one can downsize the bar down to, once the piercing is fully healed?
I'm not a fan of plastic jewelry. There is still the risk that the jewelry can damage your gums, it's as durable as metal and there is the risk of ingesting plastic and the known side effects of long term exposure to plastic.

It's hard to say without seeing the piercing first hand. Usually 5/16 or 7mm are the most common.
@@BodyPiercingTattooing I tried downsizing mine to 8mm (I have 1cm now), but it feels too tight and lost 2 beads in 2 days (yeah...) because of the tightness. But the one I have now (1cm) feels too long and gets stuck in my teeth sometimes when I eat. What should I do? Should I remove it and have it redone in another area?

Do the surgical/covid masks hinder the healing process on this? I want to get one but will wait until after the pandemic is over and masks are no longer required if that would be better.

Just got my angel bites and now my top lip looks like I got a lip injection lol
How long will it be until the swelling goes down (had the piercing for 5 days so far)
Sometimes the swelling will come on in the second or third day and last 3-5 days. If it doesn't seem to be subsiding or gets worse in the next day, see your piercer. Do you have any metal sensativity?
Body Piercing & Tattooing I am not sensitive to any metals. The swelling has gone down a little since this morning. I have to see my piercer tomorrow anyways since I swallowed one of the balls in my sleep.

Hey I just got my Munroe done yesterday and my lip is so swollen and I think my bar is too short.should I take it out ?it feels like my skin on the inside and outside off my piercing is going over my bar.my lip is so swollen
If the swelling is exceeding the length of the jewelry, see your piercer and have them put a longer post. They should be willing to do this free of charge. Otherwise remove the jewelry.
Can I use prescribed mouthwash like chlorohexadine?
I'm not a doctor or a medical professional. So I can't prescribe any medications. Additionally that would be to harsh and biotene is more than effective for healing.
Do these piercings ever close completely? (Incase I decide that I no longer wanted it) or would I have a permanent hole in my face? 😅
Another question: I wear a retainer every night, would this get in the way?
You will always have a mark if you decide to take it out. I had one and removed it and 15 years passed I I still had the mark. It did close, but the mark was always there xD.
Now I recently reopened it, but now I know that the maek/scsr will always be there lol.

It should be done above the gum line or well above the bottom of the top teeth. If it is catching on teeth it is more than likely placed too low. One of the precautions we take is to have the person smile, make different expression and talk after we mark the placement and observe how the placement moves and interacts with the mouth.

hello .. I have a low monroe, and when I smile, the inside touches the teeth a little ... will we have to change places? It has not given me any problem so far, and it has been on for about 8 months .... only if I feel it a little when I smile .... what do you recommend?
If your teeth start to get sensitive or you notice and damage, remove the jewelry.
