I strongly agree with the lyrics to this song: it resonates with my life in the day, especially when cousin Lawrence Shelton, Jr. & Sr. waved goodbye 👋 as they journeyed back to Champaign, IL, Monday morning, July 18, 1977: Pat Moody spun it that day (a lady, Brandi L. Atkins also debuted)!!

The symbolisms used in the song are really powerful. It's how we always put on a happy face whenever we miss opportunities in life. And although we try so hard, we sometimes get disappointed or failed still. It means we have to put on a brave face in life. After all life is a stage and we are all actors in it.

When you put the most destructive and deceptive kind of advice to lyric. Has it occurred to you that real people who have real life honest experiences exist outside your box and you sound to those people like a liar and a fake? This must be what Kurt Cobain was referring to in heart shaped box.

Some people are too open with their feelings.. I really do believe it's especially weak for a man to cry in public, I mean unless it was because of really tragic unexpected news like maybe an unexpected death of a loved one I could understand.. I never want to be an open book..

She was a back-up singer for Bette Midler, The Harlettes, in the early 1970s and released her first album in 1973 at the age of 22 and is still making music at age 71. Hers is not the only famous version of "Don't Cry Out Loud", but the most famous, released in 1978 when she was 27 years old. She has been featured on many television shows and specials.

It's originally by an Australian artist called Peter Allan who wrote it about his mother after his father shot himself with a gun and she had to keep it together for the sake of Peter and his sisters.
The song is written from Peter's view on how his mother kept herself strong for them.

Just heard a replay of AT40 from 1979 and this song debuted at #37. It was beginning a run to the top 10 and would eventually assume a place in history as a timeless and powerful American pop song. It wasn't introduced in the show as anything special, because such songs were simply what charted then.
...and then I look at the songs in the charts today :(

My parents have taught me that hide my feelings inside my heart since i was a child.Once i cried in front of my parents and turned out they didn't have any reaction.(My mom said i am a faker for crying once)Then,i have been crying by myself these years. To those who feel lonely, love yourself and go your own ways no matter what.Your self worth no need anyone approve. You are smarter, stronger and braver than you think.
'Fly high and proud. And if you should fall, remember you almost had it all.' If they say you can't do it,prove it you could do.

I used to love this song about 40 years ago when they played it over and over on the radio. Looking back today, I can see this as a really dysfunctional song. It's telling people to bottle up their feelings and to be emotionally constipated. Repression is not healthy.... 😅😅

It depends on the circumstances, sometimes it's a sound message. Trust me, I've raised an autistic boy for 21 years, single handedly, this message helped me keep my dignity and l kept it together: I am a college professor. Over the years, I've traveled the world (with him), learned latin dance, l took up piano, learned a new language, cultivated a garden, skating, baking , ... I have and am living for two. I couldn't be prostrate and feel sorry for myself. And I have cried a river also. 💕

Too many people internalise their troubles, and then find release in dangerous (or tragic) ways. Though the song was a huge hit, soon to become a cult classic, Carol Bayer isn’t exactly keen on the lyrics she penned about hiding feelings and putting on a brave face. In her autobiography, she explains : “For years after, when I would hear [‘Don’t Cry Out Loud’], I would question if that was how I really felt. I mean, didn’t I believe in sharing my feelings? Letting people know how I really feel?”
Well, Miss Bayer, thank you so much for those enlightening words. Many of us were wondering WHY…, weren’t we⁉️ 💜🎼💚

Love Manchester’s voice but I couldn’t agree with these lyrics. Jesus cried tears of blood...there’s no such thing as hiding our feelings from God or “we almost had it all”…with Him, we surely have it all...even when we fall! Beautiful tune but pretty sad and warped message.

    Hi Everyone 👋 🤗
I used to sing this song when I was much younger 😁
I loved this song...I didn't fully understand the words..I loved the "Don't cry out loud just keep it inside and learn how to hide your feelings ..and if you should fall remember you almost made it " 😁❤
Now at 61 I thought about it...found myself singing it and decided to UA-cam it and I love it!!! 😁🎶🎤🎵🎺🎙🙌🏾❤

Well... it's NOT a bad advice at all. It is also good on its own way.
You don't always need to cry out load and show your feelings, because we know, not all people around us really cares, even our closest one.
Learn how to hide your feelings, for they might use it to bring you down.
And if you should fall, just remember you almost have it all, so get up and fix yourself. Be proud.

I heard the song but did not know Melissa sung it. If you lose a loved one, it is hard to not cry out loud. God understands such feelings. Good enough.
