The bass guitar in this tiny desk is absolutely phenomenal, legitimately insane.
He is!!!
I gotta agree, that guy is an absolute monster and slays this tune.
matt ramsey
That’s Matt Ramsey on bass
Matt Ramsey SLAYING it, incredible tone
A jazz studio breaking down a gospel song. Now that’s what I’m talking about ❤❤❤❤❤
I CANT BELIEVE IT EITHER !
Bruh, i couldnt believe it either. These cats are already sick, but bringing in gospel as fair ground for tutorial material - its a wrap. Done. Over. These dudes and sean wilson are at the top!
@@shiloh4184 sean wilson is the Man.
Pretty closely related genres!
This is hard
Kirk is an underrated keyboardist! He is a superb player and I wish he will sit at the keyboard more when ministering. Great breakdown!
Love Theory: May 2019
All I Need: May 2020
Yep. Jacob Collier definitely listened to some Kirk Franklin.
This groove reminds me of the syncopated "partido alto" or "telocoteco" rhythms in Brazilian music (namely samba and bossa nova), except piano driven. I love it!
Exactly what i said in another thread.
Sounds like Come With Me by Tania Maria, and she's obviously very Samba influenced
@@astrotheages2914thank you so much!I'm really into Jazz and Brazilian music, but I didn't know her! It's amazing music! Have a nice day 😊
It was hip that you played phrases that match Kirk Franklin's ad lib vocals. In the parts where it didn't match, it was in the same rhythmic ballpark. Coming from a Pentecostal background, this is a beautiful take on the music from someone outside the culture but connecting to it through Jazz. Much respect!!
YES!
🙏🏼
Matt’s bass playing just rewrote what bass players do.
That Boy was tearing it up man !

I've been thinking about joining. I really like Adam Maness's videos
Matt Ramsey is truly phenomenal in this. Dude is all over the place in an amazing way
This has been one of my all time favorite Gospel tunes from Kirk Franklin so thank you Peter for breaking this down so beautifully and for the inspiration! 💖💖💖
This is one of those times I feel happy and privileged to have known about Peter Martin over the years. Seeing him breakdown gospel songs now is just to say the least 'awesome'.
I remain inspired by you daily.
I hope to see you do more gospel song breakdowns, especially with that Jazz feel that is inherent in your playing.
Thank you Peter.🙏
I literally show this to everybody. One of the best things in the last 10 years for sure lol
I love Shawn Martin quoting the “I can’t go for that” keys part
This is so similar to Jacob Collier's 'All I Need' opening groove.
That's what I thought when I heard Jacob's song
That's what I thought when I heard this song
Dude!! That was fire!! Im very familiar with the song being a predominantly gospel musician but seeing your take on it was immense! Seemed like you were really having fun in there... more gospel grooves my man!!
Wow. Fantastic breakdown. That's enough material for many hours of in depth study. Beyond the chords and rhythm, I was struck by the feeling that this was a fusion of gospel and funk. Certainly the right hand alone has a very gospel sound and feel, but the left hand and the bassline bring the funk, and they play off each other brilliantly. The way they land together on those "home" notes is so sweet. The bridge sounds very characteristic of classic Stevie Wonder harmony to me, in my limited understanding, but I know that's a whole world right there, and he was just one of the bright lights in that zone. Thanks!
I remember when peter did this on Shelter in Place. So good
Great choice! One of the best Tiny Desks of recent years, no doubt about it!!
Such a dope video! The smooth ass way Peter Martin is shot walking to the piano and vibing in perfect time 🔥
I agree! This concert floored me and left me in tears of joy!!
THANK YOU PETER, OPENSTUDIO
I've been waiting for this one for a long time.
You do such a Fantastic job of plating and teaching rhythmic piano
I can't wait to jump on this one ❤
Amazing!
Great Content in here!
God bless you Open Studio!
You guys are killing it!
This breakdown is amazing!! One of my favorite tiny desks and your break down has already made me understand theory so much more. Thank you
Peter, great explanation, as usual. Fantastic song choice as well. Love the updated video production values. Nice job by all involved.
Killer breakdown, man. Some serious groove and breakdown skills yourself, sir. Cheers and thanks for all of your videos. Benjamin
Beautiful breakdown and presentation, brother Peter! Bravo! Your excitement is contagious!
This one of the best breakdown/instructional videos I've seen! Well done!
The joy you bring is an important ingredient for one way to make a beautiful day. Thanks, Peter!
Very underrated thanks for covering this!
That song always stuck with me, it's probably that Michael McDonald-ish piano line
Exactly ... influenced by What A Fool Believes ... but awesome though😊
@@tonyjackson7599 I wouldn't agree with that. Seems more like Michael McDonald was influenced by this style of music. I think Kirk Franklin is pulling from the vast roots of Gospel piano here - as was Michael.
Seriously thank you for this! I love this track and a little help in getting it in my hands (even a little bit) is really appreciated!
Sick production on this video, love the intro Peter and team ❤
Love your passion about music and all its aspects. I feel the same only that I can't make such energizing videos, hats off Peter! Thanks!
Great breakdown Peter! Those chords!
This is insane ! You are SOO talented , wish I was across the pond , lovin it 😊
Great stuff. Thank you. Great set up. You know what you‘re doing. Keep it up and have fun with it!! Peace and piano
this channel is just insane - was randomly listening to Kirk Franklin this summer and came across this song. it slaps so hard
Listening to this again, and I can hardly wait to take it to the piano (I’m on vacay). I love how everything percolates under the melody in such a groovy way. Such a great tune!
man peter, i remember when you used to make very simple "2 minute jazz" videos. You're content and teaching scope and the look and feel of the media has expanded crazy. Thanks for what yall do. It keeps me in the music headspace everyday.
Great breakdown man...very exiting indeed! You are intricate!
This man is a genius!... I just love the way he breaks down the whole song whilst adding a whole lot of flavour to it and making us not loose any bit of interest along the way.
you guys are awesome! love kirk's tiny desk concert and it's wonderful to see it featured on open studio ❤peace
this was beautifully presented with a lot of heart.
Goals. This whole tutorial. Filled with goals of what I will eventually be able to do on piano. Thank you! It's so good.
Good job Peter very useful. Thanks
goddamnit Peter, i love you. I've been saying this is the hardest thing i've heard this decade for years.
Love that piano groove
DUDE, the freestyling at the end was NASTY smooth! My goodness!
Definitely making me wanna join again. Love Peter’s playing
I missed this on Tuesday, so thanks as always for posting. Wonderful production values, by the way.
Yes indeed, Open Studio videos are always brilliant edited

Man this is Awesome I would have never guessed y’all would be doing one of my favorite artists of all time Kirk!
Man I could go on for days about how genius Kirk is man
What a great resource - thanks for making this!!
Mr Martin, YOU ARE THE BEST....👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Love it! Great lesson, sir! ❤
Thank you for pointing me to this. Love finding an artist I've never heard before.
I don’t play piano but find this so fascinating. I don’t understand how people can be this good at piano. It feels like it’s an extension of the body when you play.
Yeah it is talent, but It's also just what happens when somebody plays and practices hours and hours, years and years. But yeah it's fascinating what humans can do
Loved what you did at 6:32
Ginga - Robson Jorge & Lincoln Olivetti
Released in 1982, very similar groove
Brilliant stuff! Love the outro Peter! The way you pros blend in perfectly, your pocket, use of space… would love to hear you play the entire song!!
Yes agreed, a solo piano version!
@@maramazone ua-cam.com/users/liver75AvbOiQQg?feature=share&t=1776 ❤
I loved this breakdown. I definitely going to practice this song of Kirk Franklin. Thanx!
Practicing right now, and boy let me tell you as a guitarist, it's really exposing some of my weakness in gospel music.
I love this! Thank you, Peter! Will you be doing anymore solo piano performance livestreams?
Props for making this video... and yeah, the bass!
This rings as a really cool 70’s sound. ❤️
Matt, the bass player, is in another dimension to be lickin' them riffs like like.
this is Epic - I sent this tiny desk concert to several musician friends. My favorite comment back was from a pro drummer who said this groove is rearranging my DNA!
Thank you for covering Kirk Franklin!
Much respect for this.
I just discovered this channel and it's amazing ✨
The intro reminds me alot of all i need - Jacob collier
I believe Love Theory came out first ... but to me sounds like it's inspired by What A Fool Believes by Doobie Brothers/Michael McDonald
@@tonyjackson7599 yeah ofcourse
PETER! Pls do a full lesson on this one in JPM ... and please unpack some of the bass playing and work us deeply through developing the bass line. Thanks!
Wow você toca muito! Congratulations!
Thank you! Hyped to have found your channel…
it’s been a while but I studied music theory (just a highschool diploma). Never grew appreciation towards classical music but always felt blessed to have a deeper grasp on the fundamentals of music theory (both as a listener and a recreational musician). Since my wife got pregnant I wondered how to get myself back in shape in time to be present and involved when my daughter picks up her first music lessons (spark up her interest whenever she gets stuck) - you’re going to be a lifesaver! 🙌 🤍
I don’t play an instrument, I just absolutely love this song and this breakdown made me love it even more 😊
This is almost identical to the groove from Jacob Collier's All I Need, or am I missing something?
Super similar!
Yeah indeed, but this song came out before All I Need
Sounds like it's inspired by What A Fool Believes by Doobie Brothers/Michael McDonald
That's exactly what I heard when Jacob's song came out - I thought - that's Love Theory!
@@tonyjackson7599 I hear that too
This was beautiful
Love theory has that African American Gospel music, Jazz, Soul, R & B, and VIBE.
Bro that’s straight fire❤ 🔥🔥
L O V E ❣❣❣ this tiny desk concert since it came out!
Awesome sir!! I had a feeling when you played the song during Shelter in place you was going to do something a take on it. Peter Martin you the best...
Thank you so much for the tutorial. Tried…but couldn’t figure it out for myself. THANKS!
Just so good! Thanks.
Now I need to go and watch the actual episode for the 14th time :)
Great master class about Kirk gospel Franklin
that bass tho!
Great analysis, thank you
So good to hear OS doing some contemporary piano need more.
Man , i love this place ❤🎉
As if you read my mind what content should come next! Incredible!
Thank you peter!
Dude, I just ran across your page... I love it.
groove from the previous decade. this was a hit in 2019...
Peter Martin, get your groove on! I never thought you had it in you. Just need to loosen those hips a little bit more and you will be ready to put it out there. Go dude! 🤟
That's a Tania Maria Groove
Identical to her Come With Me
I remember.... The Palo Alto Sessions 1981-1985. Dianne Reeves
...интересно что качество звука в этом блестящем уроке творчества Питера лучше чем в подлинной записи Кирка ❤ Спасибо за сложный 😍 и интересный разбор ❤❤❤
Awesome .... thanks for this !
Sounds like 山下達郎's Sparkle, love it!
Open Studio Gospel 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Let’s Gooooo!!!!
his intro in this video felt like a tribute to kirk franklin's videos
This is great, PLS!!more!!
Peter is a legend
