The problem with using pile worms and sardines, is the shakers steal on your bait. What we used to do, is catch live mudsuckers or shiners, a couple hours before we went out.

True...we used to use mudsuckers back then but even so, we still hook up 17 inchers too so we said heck with it...anchovies will do the work...lol
