I had to laugh when the term “buggy collar” was used for a mop fly 😂

    Good looking mop!
The fact that there is any controversy around this fly at all is ridiculous. It's tied from artificial material and looks like it imitates a handful of natural food sources.
It's embarrassing to me that so many folks from the fly fishing community have such sensitive egos, that they hate on anything that others have success with. I guess it takes away from the illusion that fly fishing is the most complex hobby in the world.

At this point I feel quite silly even keeping this thread going, but now you've gone and made me feel bad.
The main issue is that purists like yourself assume greater skill and knowledge than others, simply because they don't consider themselves to be above fly fishing with nymphs. If there is an opportunity at all to catch a fish on a dry, most of us will take it. But you and I both know that that often isn't the case. Just because I fish nymphs, doesn't mean I haven't also put countless hours into my dry fly casting, landing, and mending. I've read books, watched videos, filmed myself, made adjustments. Like I said, everyone knows it's the most fun way to fly fish.
Your Henry's Fork experience sounds like a lot of fun. I live for challenges like that. But nymphing can be challenging too. The fish on my local tailwaters will have nothing to do with a nymph that's dragging even slightly, and they're very particular about the patterns they will eat. It's a worthy way to target trout with a fly rod.
I'm sure you can't be convinced of that, but the fact that you drop into other people's blogs and youtube channels to condescend on and condemn others for their methods is what turns you into an antagonist of the community. It's off-putting and it gives us a bad name. Just fish and let fish.

Point well taken. Fly fishing's historic stuffiness sucks. But, sometimes in that stuffiness are some kernels of truth and insight. The old guy with a cane rod saying you should try out a Lafontaine Caddis pupa may be on to something. You just never know. I'll clean up my portion of this thread.

Very well put James. luckily most people fish to have fun. It's a weird concept, but I have been trying it out and it's working for me.

Fly fishing is the most complex hobby in the world, which is why some people get so mad that such simple, silly stuff like this and squirmies catch ridiculous amounts of fish

Great tie. Question for you, if this isn't it, which fly if you HAD to choose one is the "Super cheater pattern that calls in fish from 20 feet away?" I'm really interested in your response!
