    Thanks for that David. As noted below I don't have this system but you've given some great insight that I can explore further, which I wouldn't have otherwise.

    Good job on the video David! very useful video for someone getting into the hobby and using brewing software. That being said I won't use it until they integrate water chemistry and yeast calculators into the software, it is such a hassle to juggle between different software and repeat the recipe info to dial everything in.

      Do not forget this is free, it is unlikely that it will feature such things. It's useful to use this for the GF connect. If you want such other features then use Beersmith then export to this.

    Great video David, i thought i knew all about the creator but you showed me something different. Good work. Suggestion for future video, how to use a refractometer. Easy when there is no alcohol but using the apps to work it out with alcohol just seems to baffle me!

    • @DavidHeathHomebrew
      @DavidHeathHomebrew  6 років тому

      Thanks Richard. I would not recommend using a refractometer with alcohol present. Use a hydrometer instead. Cheap, easy and accurate :)

    Excellent and informative as usual. Don’t mean to be rude, but perhaps an edit explaining the Brewing System drop down in the WATER INFUSION section. I have the 110v model, and I’ve tripped up on this and ended up with too much wort, and had to extend my boil by 30 minutes.

    Hi David, thanks for the vid. Question for you - If you adjust the “losses” box in the recipe creator does it actually do anything to the recipe? I.e. increase/decrease water volumes? and if so does it also alter the fermentables input so the desired abv is preserved? I always seem to end up with 1 & 2 litres less in the fermenter than the desired batch size despite adjusting this figure so not sure what it actually does.

    • @DavidHeathHomebrew
      @DavidHeathHomebrew  6 років тому

      Great, glad you liked it. Yes I believe it will change your volumes and thus abv depending on how much you change it by. 2L is about right though for the majority.

      I would suggest adding more water as you approach the end and can see where things are.

      @ryanwallace, following David's advice above: I don't have a Connect system, quite likely never will but apiece of advice I picked up here some time back was increase the sparge multiplier from .7l to 1.1l. Since then results always spot on. Just FWIW.

      I was having the same issue assuming it would increase my total water but it seems it does not. My last brew I checked by drastically changing the losses input from 0L to 20L and then going to brew recipe and looking at total water needed and the number did not change. Odd that GF would make the UX like this, as I was 3L short my last two brews. David please let me know if I'm doing something wrong and thank you for all your work.

      I would keep track of the differences in your brews and then make it up later in the brew.

    Hi David, great video as always. This might be a question for the FB page, but I think it fits here regarding the content.
    Do you think that it’s worth getting Beersmith? Ive only ever used the GF recipe builder, and I’m curious about the benefits that I could be missing out on.

    • @DavidHeathHomebrew
      @DavidHeathHomebrew  6 років тому +1

      Hmm tricky really. I use it myself still but then I have had it for many many years and have a great deal of recipes stored on it. I would suggest you try the free trial and see if you think they extra features are worth paying for. This free Recipe creator from GF is being upgraded with more features soon.

    • @AlanClarkLangbank
      @AlanClarkLangbank 6 років тому

      David Heath that’s interesting about the GF recipes. I’ll try the free version, but wait for the upgrade and then compare.
      Do you know if the upgrade will include water profiles, & additions? Or is it a secret 😉?

    Do you know where to find definitions of the dropdown options on the recipe creator? (Hop Stand, FlameOut, etc)

    • @DavidHeathHomebrew
      @DavidHeathHomebrew  5 років тому

      Sure, there is an FAQ within the recipe creator that I think handles all this. I have an idea that if you hover over the sections then there are tooltips? If not then let me know what you want definitions for and I will explain them for you :)

    Thanks David, I have a question for you about the recipe tool, the search or filter function. My stock of ingredients is limited, so I'm not interested in recipes with ingredients I don't have at the moment. Is it possible to filter on specific malts AND hops AND yeast and not showing recipes with ingredients I didn't mentioned?

    10/10 will use.
    unrelated, i have a conical now and want to make a pilsener. What fermenting schedule do you use for a bottom fermenter like that or any other bottom fermenters? :)

    • @DavidHeathHomebrew
      @DavidHeathHomebrew  6 років тому

      See my Bohemiam pilsner video, I share the schedule in full there. I would just write it but its lengthy!

    • @SeBastad666
      @SeBastad666 6 років тому +1

      O i have some time to kill, shoot. XD
      I just see a lot of them in forums, and most of them disagree with each other

    • @DavidHeathHomebrew
      @DavidHeathHomebrew  6 років тому

      Haha it's a question of taste ultimately but my schedule seems to please most that try it.

    • @SeBastad666
      @SeBastad666 6 років тому +1

      so yeah i watched it again, forgot it had a schedule in it. Didn't have the conical at the time then so it was probably a lack of interest >< I tune out when i cant use the knowledge provided, but got that part fixed :)
      so the last stage is a matter of taste, how long did it take for the bohemian to get where it needed to be?
      I think i might use your recipe without any changes. Sure looks fine!

    • @DavidHeathHomebrew
      @DavidHeathHomebrew  6 років тому +1

      You shouldn't need to change any of my recipes to be honest, I only share very tried and tested content. Much of it comes from commercial brewing. I lagered for 3 weeks, good sweet spot for my taste.

    Hi David, Great video - I thought I had worked out all of its uses until I re-visited this video again today. Would you recommend using just this software or creating your recipe on software such as Beersmith and then importing this into the Grainfather app?

    I wish there was a simple way the Creator allows me to switch the Imperial amounts to Metric. (in recipes created by others). Or is there a way, and am I missing it completely?

    • @DavidHeathHomebrew
      @DavidHeathHomebrew  6 років тому +1

      There is :) Put the recipe in edit more (save it to your account first) and then switch from imperial to metric. The toggle in near the top close to boil volume and so on.

    • @Pwrginger
      @Pwrginger 6 років тому +1

      oh, wow. Hidden in plain sight! Those cheeky Bastards! =p
      Guess I can stop searching for metric based recipes now. Thanks!

      Got another quick question. Your "CoW" is next on my brew schedule. Do you use fresh or dried lemon grass?

    • @DavidHeathHomebrew
      @DavidHeathHomebrew  6 років тому

      Either should work, fresh if you can of course :)

    The GF app doesn't seem to work with Android devices, it works well with ipads and ipod touch and no doubt iphones as well.

    • @DavidHeathHomebrew
      @DavidHeathHomebrew  5 років тому +1

      Very true though that whole eco system is quite broken currently to be fair. Ive moved over to Brewfather instead, which can be used for free if you do not wish to save recipes. I export to the GF app just for alarms and sparge counter but for everything else Brewfather has it more accurate and better.
