I am baffled that its real but not suprised. It really should be outlawed. Time off is beneficial for EVERYONE. Companies that cant look past the immediate benefit of pinching pennies don't get long term gains.
In my country if the job is legit (like registered under all regulations) pto days are intransferable AND have to be used the following year after you earned them, so the company themselves can get in trouble if they don't let the people use it. Companies can literally give more to someone in need its not a physical thing limited in any way, I think its outrageous to ask people to "donate" theirs
I had a co-worker whos father and brother in Guatemala got caught up in a hurricane. he used his two weeks of saved PTO searching for his father and brothers body. he found his brother but when he couldn't find his father, he asked for more time off, and then HR brought out the PTO donation forms. Ridiculous. And people looked at me like I was the A-hole when I started asking why HR cant just give Victor more time off to look for his fathers body.
I like how this subtlety addresses how despite working a 40 hour corporate job, these two individuals don’t have access to healthcare that can cover serious illnesses nor paternal leave despite working at the company for many years. What a beautiful way to point out how messed up a system this is.
“These are complicated executive matters, you wouldn’t understand” No I understand perfectly actually. You can do whatever you want as an executive, you could give Jimmy more PTO with the snap of your fingers but you choose not to. Bureaucracy doesn’t actually matter, due process doesn’t actually matter, things can happen instantly when it involves rich people, and it does. Bureaucracy and waiting is a facade to keep poor people in place, you don’t actually need to wait at a bank for hours and hours or wait anywhere, company policy is a tool to keep poor people in their place, it can be disregarded at any time when it comes to the CEO’s son. Being an executive isn’t a complicated job, it isn’t an important job, it’s a job where you get paid millions to do nothing.
I don't get it. Does John think PTO just grows on trees? What is HR supposed to do, go down to the ol' PTO shop and get Neil Jameson or whatever his name is more of it? Boss is out here trying to do some good and he's having his good intentions thrown in his face!
At my first office job I saw a donation for cancer treatment for a coworker that had been working there for nearly 30 years via a raffle. Winner got $100 out of the "lottery." I stared at it for so long that my boss asked what was up. "Why doesn't the company just donate another $100?" She took a moment, re-read the sign, and then after a while walked quietly back to her office. Millions of dollars every year and they wanted people who made between 20-50k a year to donate, to possibly win $100 of the donation for someone's cancer treatment. Later that year they made a commercial with the CEO showing off a classic car collection, and I truly began to hate some folk. This gave me a flashback to that.
In my country, if you have cancer, you are out of the workforce, (most cases). Your employer have to pay you for 72 weeks (I think) and after that you get 70% of your pay from the insurance. And some how the sky is still on his place and didn't fall on our heads for the blasphemy of taking care of our sick more then taking care of the numbers of a company.

Insurance companies like to make the burden of keeping someone with an issue like cancer on the policy so huge that companies will find excuses to fire seriously sick employees and cut off their health insurance
The USA needs the UK system, at a bare minimum - mandatory minimum paid time off, plus unlimited sick days (we have to show evidence if we take more than 7 days off).
