I'm hearing a wide variety of influences on this album. First and foremost is Psychadelic Funk like George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic. I also do hear a slight Rick James approach to vocals on this particular song. I think a lot of the rest of the album is heavily inspired by Prince and Pink Floyd especially with the instrumentation. This is one of the best albums I've heard this year and I'm enjoying this a lot more than Starboy. Not to say Starboy was entirely bad because it did have some great songs(I feel it coming, Reminder, Sidewalks, Stsrboy) however it wasn't as consistent and unique with the sounds as Awaken my Love is.

The best thing about this album its familiar yet sooooo far left of todays sound. I love when an artist can bridge old and new into their own. Hes not the first to make an album that is sonically like this however he was inspired and influenced by funk and soul music. Its something we really need to bring back in a really explosive way. I was so dumbfounded by how great this album feels and sounds. His abilities in vocal range was fucking phenomenal. The homage he really paid to parliament funkadelic and all those 70's soul bands that were the soundtrack of that era was done so effectively it makes me want to listen to one of those albums. Kendricks to pimp a butterfly had that feel of soulful hip hop. I feel this could be the soundtrack to what is to come in the next 4 years. Throw this on at any cookout, at a party, just chillan and it makes you feel so fucking proud and glad to be black.

My absolute favorite off the album. They’re all masterpieces but this paints the perfect picture of the devil and his entourage for some reason. Just a dark cave with a single beam of moonlight shining through from somewhere in the ceiling. The villain stands there with these women behind him just singing as he circles you with this malicious intent
