This video series is EXACTLY what I needed, I'm about to build an AR for the first time and I want to know what the pro's and con's of each kind of optic are. Thank you guys for doing this, and its prefect timing for me.
@@ViolentbyDesignYou have a very skewed view of reality. Not sure why you’re so bothered about what other people say on a yt video but do your thing.
Like the video. My two cents. If this is a CQB test the LPVO should be at 1x. I really like when anyone talks about the potential of both eyes open shooting. It is by far the best thing I ever decided to train and learn.
For CQB (zero to 50) dot plus magnifier works best for me (I've tried all 3). Everyone is different, find what works for you and master it.
What do you need a magnifier for at 50? Unless you’re trying to stack dimes, a dot is more than enough for 50.
@tolebelon I'd imagine he's nit using the magnifier at those ranges but just wants the capability lol
@@tolebelonI have a magnifier, I just leave it in the up position and use it all the time. No reason not to use it all the time.
I swear they are reading my mind. I was just thinking about this last week and this morning on how I want a video like this, to help choose for my new builds.
Dot and Magnifier for me. I love the ability to drop excess weight if I want or use the latter for some target identification without actually pointing the gun that way.
Also! My eyes suck. Magnifiers work way better for me than the diopters on LPVOs and prisms for some reason.
This video is some nice asmr and brought me so peace today. Loving it. Peak aesthetics. The weather and backdrop. All of it.
I always found it funny in the Marines after making adjustments they would tell us to slap the acog to make sure it was set lol
When I was originally sighting mine in I wasn't smacking it and my POI kept moving around. There was an older Marine at the range he came over and he's like "You gotta slap it after you adjust it" Did as he said and it worked.
When running CQB room clearing competitions with an LPVO vs an Eotech, the time gap is dramatically different while transitioning between multiple targets. Not even close. LPVO is much slower to use.
this is definitely true. I'm a huge LPVO proponent. I think it's actually a very fair consideration to do a LPVO with a cant/top mounted red dot to really cover this short coming. Even though the answer is truly "it depends", I choose to run just an LPVO as it is capable in most situations that the average 16" rifle will be put through.
In real life, cqb means frag party and point shooting. Get the optic you're the most comfortable and stick with it.
@@grazianism
Not all CQB is inside a building and not all indoor firefights are CQB. Still, you're definitely right about the grenades & point shooting.
This is why I bought a 1-8 power LPVO with ACSS reticle for my 6.5 Grendel Hunting rifle but I bought an EOTech EXPS2 w/ G33 3x magnifier for my recreational Fun gun or my just in case gun..
@@grazianismWe civilians (including ex-military) will never be doing anything with frags. You MIGHT manage some flash bangs of some type but frags? I would expect that if your LPVO has a nicely illuminated reticle, shooting with both eyes open would be capable of being as fast as with an EOTech. You just want the red (or green) LPVO reticle on your target and go.
Love this to be a continuous series. You’re always leaning towards one thing but seeing it in action makes you think it all
I like this discussion. Would like to see more discussion on the different optics.
I'm fortunate enough to have all three optics that you featured here. I find that life is usually always easier with the good ole ACOG. Just my opinion.
What works for you is the answer! Whatever you’re going to be proficient with is going to be best and you must try to find out. I do Love EOTech my personal opinion with or without magnifying.. Great video loved the comparisons!
LPVO all the way in this particular rifle setup. The others have their place, but I prefer LPVO. And if you get pirates eye from a 5.56, you are doing it wrong.
They're all great choices, but it would depend on what the situation you're using it for is.
I agree with other commenters too that the REAL difference is going to be when in close and moving from one target to another in totally different directions and at unpredictable angles. That’s where an EOtech is really gonna shine.
SBR = Red Dot
GPR = Red Dot & Magnifier
SPR = LPVO 1-10
Long Range = Real Scope
Just bought my DDM4A1 and was wondering what type of optic to go with. Might just go with the Holographic and magnifier. What are other good mods for this rifle?
100% ! Anything under 600 meters use red dot / magnifier , over 600 meters LPVO with offset red dot.
To answer the main question I enjoyed this video and would love to see more, but then again I always do lol. I’ve run dots and prism optics for a hot minute. Either 3x or 5x. Just got my first lpvo, and sig tango msr 1-6. I really like it but haven’t got to shoot it yet. I see myself using that on a deer rifle but not an ar for a few reasons. It’s a little too big for me personally and fast eye relief isnt the best. So the dot or prism works for that. While hunting with a bolt gun I don’t need fast eye relief so I can swing it. Idl just my personal thoughts. I’ve never tried the magnified dot, seems silly heavy and bulky though
Really liked the video. I just purchased my first ar and am currently having the same debate as to which optic to go with. I really appreciate the video and the time you put into this. Much appreciated
Why does the eotech get to add a magnifier to compare but the acog doesn’t get to add an rmr?
Most likely going off of prior service experience. ACOG fixed issued on a rifle but no RMR backup. Pretty standard in GWOT.
I’d love to see you do this comparing the front running suppressors on a well gassed di ar and your MCX spear lt (RC3, slx, huxworks, etc.)
There has been many videos on this topic. I like this series because you're getting into different situation where all 3 can shine.
If you're in an urban area, Eotech and magnifier all the way. The acog can be good for a DMR in an urban area, but would need a piggy back red dot.
Running in the woods with some open areas, acog with a red dot would probably be best, especially if it's a end of days situation, where batteries are hard to find. Would be limited to the piggyback dot under NV though, so make sure to get a good one.
An LPVO would be good at open area, with chances of short shots as well (ie hog hunting). You can also utilize a clip-on NV for capabilities at night. Just make sure you also get a 45 offset or piggyback dot. This can be used for back up, as well as quick target acquisition at decent ranges, when magnification is dialed up.
For duty/defense, I really like the EoTech despite an astigmatism when I don’t have my contacts in or wearing glasses. With three on three go-to ARs, two 11.5 and a 14.5 p/w, it only made sense to get a 5x magnifier. It’s amazing on the 14.5 slinging 77s out to 384 yds., the furthest I have to shoot, lol. I like how I don’t have to keep it on the rifle to save weight or to dismount for an impromptu “spotting scope.”
been using vortex LPVO, with flip up irons. Works solid.
Im thinking the same, but how do you get the LPVO out of the way if you need the irons?
You found a good quick detach mount or what?
@@JamieR2077. There might be a quick-detach mount, or he is using offset iron.
LPVO with offset ACOG
I'm a fan of a fixed power optic like the ACOG and having an offset red dot for CQC. I feel like it makes the most sense, having an optic that's so well proven and having no battery required being the main optic. While an offset little RMR style sight for those close quarters with only one battery type to worry about. Although, there is the See All open sight that like the ACOG is fiber optic and tritium powered, only needs a little more training to get used to than a regular dot.
big advantage to a scope is an etched reticle
To me for a do all SHTF set up. I would have to say red dot/magnifier would be the way to go. If you move to a cqb situation you can pop the magnifier off out the way. And if you need to engage out to distance you have that option as well. Acog is good to. But to me LPVO is for a setup your are going to be running more long distance than anything
1x prism with magnifier, no batteries required. What I run on my 14.5".
@@InexorWoWWhich PRISM do you run? The one I bought the company said it can’t run with a magnifier.
For shtf the last thing you want is something dependent on batteries....
@@justinmurray4652 that's why u keep fresh batteries I'm your optic and on u
@@timothycain4512I guess that’s where people’s wildly different beliefs of what “shtf” come into play.
Appreciate all the videos. I'm still jelly that you get to call that work, though.
I get a chance to work with marines on a daily basis. They are not happy with the VCOG, says it’s not dependable and they can’t trust it over the time they’ve used it. They say its prone to leaking letting water in and thus fogging up in the field and very heavy. And why didn’t you do the drill with it on 1x power verses 2x for close shooting? Nice review overall and good comparison.
It’s all circumstantial. LPVO is most versatile. Holographic isn’t practical for home defense due to battery life. ACOG is a nice in between
Have you guys tested that plate carrier with night vision ? The black areas of rubbery material and buckles I wonder about. Thsnk for your great videos.
I've only ever run an lpvo. I just feel it's the best of both worlds
I love my Eotech + Magnifier but have been using a 3x micro Prism lately and am really liking it as well. Nice comparison video and beautiful area for a range.
I have been down this road...'Gave my VCOG away to a friend who was LE/Mil. He loves it, but complains (every once in a while) about the weight. I had the thing mounted on a JP 300 AAC and it totally canted the weight of the weapon. I run an ACOG with a Trijicon red dot on my AK (side mount). It works very well. My favorite setup for an AR is a Swarovski Z8i (HUGE eyebox) mounted on a Geissle Super Precision 30mm scope mount. This has a Reptilia front top (forward) ring which allows me to run a Trijicon RCR. It is the best setup I have found.
Eotech batteries not really an issue…my surefire weapon light runs on the same ones and I carry extras in the Magpul stock storage tubes😀
This was fantastic. It would be fun to send a newbie out with these and see what works best for someone with far less experience. Like me. Just a thought.
RDS + mag: primarily
Why not use 1x on the LPVO at close range instead of 2x?
Loves these comparisons seeing how I got the 4x ACOG and my brothers got the eotech.. but I think your swinging target is causing you to wait onnit to swing down before your follow up shots, no? Weigh the target down or do it on one that doesn't swing..
Definitely like the series, I think it works for new people entering this guns world. Myself just ordered an AR-15, and would like to know what accessories work best for it. Keep them coming!
ACOG + Red dot is an option as well. Trijicon makes a version where you can mount an RMR pistol optic. Throw a trijicon SRO or that new HD on there.
Make CF great again, Clint covering all the videos
This is a very practical description & demonstration. Very, very helpful.
Is expense comparison a relevant factor for many folk in this realm?
I know at this point for me & mine I am running a basic/standard LPVO with no illuminated reticle. This is partly to keep it cost effective.
Looking forward to getting my first Modern Sporting Rifle soon as soon as my semi-auto license comes in (New York. Boo!)
My last experience with optics was a fixed 4x on a Ruger rimfire 35 years ago.
I’m very glad for these comparisons because I’m about twelve generations of technology behind and have some catching up to do.
Much of what is available today was science fiction the last time I bought a firearm. What a time to be alive! 💯👌
Love it! Eventually I would love to get one of those optics however my finances at the moment won’t allow them just yet. Can you recommend an entry level option? Thanks Clint.
I was thinking of adding the ACOG 4x32/RMR combo to my FN M16 Military Collector. But lately I’ve been leaning towards that same VCOG you have in this video. Wanted to add that the zoom adjustment is literally everything!
Go with ACOG 4x32....no RMR needed. RMR only if you have night vision on your helm.
@@ΛεωνάνδροςΠεργαμενός why would you limit the piggyback RMR to just NV use, it's a great close range optic. Magnified optics suck at 10-25 yards
@guitarthrasher2176 I got the acog 3.5x35 led and I shoot in 25 meters as fast as with an red dot. Maybe like you said in 10-20 meters a red dot would have a slightly advantage but not enough for me to put an extra red dot on my rifle.
Someone did a video and they found that they were a hair faster, and just as accurate with just the ACOG and without the RMR. Not sure how well versed he was with the top dot or canted. He did both. It was one of the Guntubers, just not sure which
The ACOG has to b a fan favorite just from reputation.
I have a Romeo msr and I love it, wish it was shake awake but still very nice, I just bought a firefield reddit for a second upper just to mess with it bc it was $40, and it hasn't failed me yet
I would probably agree. I was running a 1-6 FFP LPVO on my 16" and found that at 1x the reticle was that of a red dot but the odds of engaging at 1x was null and found with LPVOs you're either all or none meaning all the way pushed in at max mag or at 1. Why? If you are taking fire as example you're not gonna spend time trying to find that sweespot mid zoom. I was given a 4x fixed prism and like that a lot so I replaced my LPVO with that and run a 1x red dot on a 45 for like a cqb close type thing. On my 10.5 I'm running a 3 dot with 3x mag and on my 6" PCC 9mm I'm running a holographic. Realistically having been in actual combat in an actual urban like environment your engagements most likely won't be beyond that 300 meter range. Most will be 50 to 200 actually so that long range isn't necessary unless yours just trying to get PID before engagement. Long range stuff I leave that up to my 6.5CM bolt action with a 9-23 scope on it
LPVO & offset red dot. Covers all the bases & faster to switch than red dot + magnifier.
Just sighted a new red dot today, then mounted a true co witness mag with side mount. Easy to do, works nicely
Not surprised with the results considering you're 50 yards and under. Hope you plan on doing the exact same drills say at 100 to start and even possibly 150. It would be nice to see the comparison between them and then I final tally of all of them.
love my 1-10 lpvo with 45deg green dot. basically keep lpvo over 4X and use dot for anything close works amazing
I have G33 and thought it was great until I saw that a person around 100rds away dressed in camo around standing in trees/shrubs and 3x did not give me great threat ID vs 1-6X LPVO. If I could do it all again probably go w/ 4x led ACOG w/RDS as minimal magnification for use in hardwood forest mixed with open fields. Your mileage will vary but also don't need 8X or higher either.
Big fan of prism scopes here. 4X on a 9mm rifle and a .22lr. So much fun.
I run a 3-9x with a top dot on my GPR. Went with the Shepherd Rugged 3-9x, 30mm tube and a decent BDC reticle. Fantastic glass, fantastic turrets.
Absolutely! Keep them coming. Really good info.
It all matters on the job you're intending it for, if I know its mainly long range use with some urban usage or within 100 yards I'd choose an lpvo with a canted red dot, where as if it were mostly close range usage out to roughly 2-300 yards than I'd go with the magnifier combo. What i wish someone would come out with is a support for your forward arm to help support more weight on a rifle to lengthen your usage and curb fatigue
Im currently running a sig tango msr with an offset mounted kraken green dot. For night vision capabilities also a better zero for cqb and a much quicker sight picture. May swap the lpvo for and acog at some point though
That lmt is one 5.56 i will pay the price for. I never liked the short handguards, but something is beautiful about that rifle. The guy who won the givaway is blessed. My other favorite is the spear and even the spear Lt.
Green Prism+magnifier for astigmatism individuals
On the last exercise it was interesting to hear you pick up the holographic and say, "I'm going to run with what makes sense.. no magnification." In fairness, you can run the VCOG with no magnification as well.. when it makes sense.
I'd like to see other shooters, possibly with different life experiences. Possibly less subjective, go with five sets, average best three on the two-shot exercises. Granted I am a total new shooter but want to get an AR15 this year and will rely on your videos for the optic. thanks
eotech with the G45
Great video, looking forward to seeing more of this series.
Different optics for different jobs. I find the EOTech with magnifier the most versatile. I run different optics on different AR's for different situations. But my SHTF rifle is the 11.5, 556 with the ACOG.
For apples to apples, you should try using the same # of rounds. Say 10 per optic. That way you get a good and easy hit percent ratio
EOTech plus magnifier will remain top dog until there is something like the VCOG but more affordable.
For a 16"+ rifle I like the LVPO for a SBR I like the ACOG.
Keep it up Clint! Appreciate the comparisons.
Hi Clint I just bought myself an eotech last week I’ve been shooting iron sights for a few months now would you recommend me to get a riser for my eotech or is it fine sitting directly on the rail how it is
Why doesnt the sight with no magnification have a etched in redicle for use if battery dies
What are the best options for prism, ACOG clones with no batteries?
I use the monstrum forward magnifier. It is only 2x, but in front of a 3x prism, it gives me 6x.
You should provide links in the description to your website for the sale of these items 😁👍
Clint.. SF brother and happy 248th! I like ACOG’s , what are your thoughts on that new HWU Saturn ?? ( Futuristic Acog).
If you had to have one for the rest of your life, LPVO is probably the best option.
I love Eotechs... but I bought an LPVO for my SCAR and I love it. I have to go with the LPVO.
The ACOG is hands down the best.. but it all depends on what you use it for.. I’m about to pick up an Eotech for home defense.. but if I wanted an all around gun, I’d probably go LVPO
Great video. Gives me some ideas for drills I can run. Did you forget to do the movement drill with the LPVO - or did I miss it?
Great intro into sights
Try out the PA SLX 1X Microprism Gen II (and 3x)
Did all optics have 50yd zero?😊
Sorry, I still can’t find an argument for an LPVO that works for me. (Obviously YMMV). I just don’t see the need to be able to instantly flex from 1x to 8x-10x; to me the distances where I’m going to want 8-10x demand a set-up that’s different from 1-4x mag that I’m looking at a different rifle, not just cranking up the magnification. To each their own, and clearly a lot of people love LPVOs, to me they just aren’t worth the size/weight. Either go for small 1x red dots, small 3x prisms, or go for real magnification that full scopes provide if you’re hauling the weight. 🤷♂️
you have to make the best with what you have! nevertheless an lpvo with an antimatter scopeswitch has the widest range of uses.
I run red dot and mag on my shtf general purpose build. It’s a great medium and easy to remove if I don’t need the magnification for whatever reason. Unrelated but how your likening the firemaxx pros lol?
I have the vortex strickeagle 1x8 and I have never been happier
All great choices but damn I can’t afford any of them. That VCOG is amazing but at $3000, never going to happen.
I love etched prism optics, simple and reliable.
How about a HPVO plus micro red dot either top or offset mounted? That's my future AR10 build plan.
Thank you they are all literally sitting in my shopping cart cause I can’t decide lol
I would like to see you try out some of T Rex Arms’s drills they have available for free on their website. The equipment shakeout one puts you through some challenges
Hello. Which one is best for hog hunting, generally in short distances (30-40 meters) and dense areas?
Maybe consider adding MPVOs w/ offset red dot. That gives you true short, medium, and long range capabilities.
Like so many of these videos online, it's clear as mud.
Scenario: AR 10, .308/7.62 NATO, keeping iron sights as backup(I'm 59 so learned to shoot w/out optics on everything), all around home defense rifle, shots from 1 yard out. What's the good general purpose optics system?.???
I have scoped long range shooters, ie Browning A Bolt, medallion with Leupold vari X 3-9x40 in .300 win mag. So I'm not looking to turn an AR 10 into a sniper rifle.
Great video, I really wish you had done 1x on the LPVO. I love my EOTech but I am really looking at buying a LPVO and trying to figure out is it worth it vest the holo which this video seems to suggest no.
17:49 that math ain’t mathin’ 😂
Great stuff Bro!! what would u put on a 16" AR15?
LPVO with ACOG mounted at the 12 oclock sporting a piggyback reddot. And an EOTech on a 45 degree offset.
And carry an AK for when the AR fails
This is the way
😂😂😂
Don’t forget 45° offset irons on the opposite side of your EoTech 👌
lol no better way to make a 6 pound AR 3 times the weight but have all the capability! You definitely need one of the optics on a 8 inch riser for NV and that set up would be perfect!
