Rumbelle was my first main fictional ship, and I’ll always love them, both individually and as a couple, when written as they originally were and in-character from S1-S3 ish, in certain scenes after that when they were in character after that, and in canon-divergent/AU fanon scenarios. Unfortunately, just like every other remaining main character and couple on this show in canon that lasted past the first three ish seasons of the series, they were subjected to major instances of cheaply shocking, flanderdized, inconsistent, repetitive, and wildly ooc character assassinating bad writing that I cannot excuse for the sake of contrived plot twists/devices and Drama™️, which made them come across as melodramatically toxic, unsympathetic, and ridiculously stupid at certain points post S3 ish out of nowhere, so that they could derail them to re-rail them, and/or prop up Zelena, Regina, and especially Hook/CS in their laziness to actually write character development to make their redemption arcs more believable. To be fair, like I said, it’s not just Rumple and Belle who got dealt ridiculous, ugly, and unfair blows of character assassination and/or repetitive storytelling on the show after S3. It was Emma, Hook, Regina, Snow, David, and even Henry, too. Zelena was essentially a Jerk Sue, so besides her soft spot for her daughter, she was pretty consistently portrayed as a loathsome, unsympathetic, and one-dimensional cartoon villain, who never expressed any remorse. Kitsowitz and these writers clearly only had development, growth, and story planned out through the Neverland arc. After that, they had no idea WTF they were doing, stopped trying altogether, broke their own rules willy nilly, retconned everyone in the remaining main cast’s original character development from S1-3A over and over and over again, and/or committed mass character assassination to redo their S1-3A arcs throughout 3B-S7 over and over and over again, and/or to prop up their creator pets. The show should have just ended with the Neverland arc, and as far as I’m concerned, that’s where the *real* canon OUAT ended on the whole, anyway because the majority of what came afterwards were a series of horrifically ooc and stupid writing choices that made me feel pissed off with Kitsowitz and the writers of the show for destroying the characters and/or ships. I’m still in the Dearie/Rumbelle fandom. I probably always will be because I love the individual characters and couple that Rumbelle originally were, and could have and should have been, and the fandom is full of such amazing and passionate creative writers who are far superior storytellers to Kitsowitz and their team of hacks. However, the writing in the actual canon of OUAT just went so painfully off the rails after the Neverland arc to the point of basically being unsalvageable across the entire board of remaining main characters and ships on the show that I had to finally quit watching after S5 to preserve my sanity and my love of the characters and ships before Kitsowitz and their team of hacks ruined them any further with their character assassinating cheaply shocking twists.
