When this song was released back in 1985 off the picture book album, I remember this cool song becoming an instant hit back in 85. Mick Hucknall from Manchester, England, was the original co- writer and singer of this song.
It's a little ambiguous from your comment -- but even if YOU weren't confused, others new to the song might be. What I'm getting at is just that the singer shown above IS Mick Hucknall. Simply Red is the name of his band. :) I remember where I was and who was with me the first time I heard this song as a high school junior. It is one of those songs I never get tired of hearing.
There's no way , if you see this dude walking down the street that he'd have a voice like that. First time I heard this song, I thought it was a black woman. Even after more than 30 years, it's a classic, still taps that heart.
This song is about torment, young man retrospection about his early years. Also, this song got a strong British character easly recognized by a number of sequences in video. Actually, video helps to rocognize it by implementing such a moments as a view from classroom, picture of local church cementery, a shot with street with row houses, boys playing cricket. It is a tale about distant pass, with steam train, with old fashion traveling suitcase, antique looking bicycle. It's also got a hint of young man's memory about his boyish, innocent crush to his pretty teacher. He is recalling a moments from his past and those moments in his memory contain a shades of sadness, they indicate that his childhood was as gray as gray was life then and there. Very melancholic song, masterfully performed.
Aw what an absolute legend he is today he’s a 60 year old man, but he’s still got it Mick Hucknall. I’m so glad the youth of today are enjoying these LEGENDS 👍🇬🇧
I'm happy and sad for you guys. Happy you found this treasure and sad that you guys didn't know it. Mmmm. Smh. I highly suggest looking for all his live concerts...his voice is incredible.
Mick Hucknall (Who's the singer/vocalist) wrote this jam at only 17yrs old. Used his background of his mom's leaving him at a very young. Total classic
Simply Red...you can't know enough!!! 1 St and last Concert and it was pretty private because he was brand new playing a smaller venue in Houston! He hit a little after Wham/George Michael, only took him 2 years to hit it everywhere!! Dudes got blues for days in his own unique way! He currently lives in Italy with wife and child! His talent is above none and class to grasp!! He thinks deeply so he sings deeply!!
Simply Red were formed in 1985 they are from Manchester, England. The lead singer is Mick Hucknall he is 60 years old. The group split in 2010 and they reformed in 2015
The song is about his childhood. His mom left him when he was 4. He was raised poor by his father. It's about the struggles of being raised by a strict father. Strangled by the arms of Pater. Missing his mom, Hoping for the Arms of Mater. The song is actually very sad and introspective. For some Simply Red Info. Started in 85 with Picture Book, the Album this song is on through 2019's Blue Eyed Soul. They've sold over 60 mil albums world wide. 1991's Stars is the 11th best selling studio album all time in the UK. 12 Studio albums and none has ever peaked lower than # 6 on the UK Album charts. 4 #1's and 3 #2's. Except for this song and 1989's If you Don't know me by now which both hit #1 in the USA, their success in the US isn't as big as in the UK. 7 top 40's in the USA. 37 top 40's in the UK. In the USA music was controlled by radio and Simply Red wouldn't fit neatly in a pop station or a jazz or R&B station so they didn't get played as much on the radio limiting their success here. Almost every album has a mix of Pop, try Fairground or For your babies. R&B, Try If you don't know me by now or Angel (features Lauren Hill and Wyclef Jean) For an Jazzy sound try Sad Old Red or It's only Love. For a bit of Funk listen to Thrill Me or I Won't feel Bad. Even a little Reggae with Ghetto Girl and Night Nurse. In addition Sunrise and You Make Me Feel Brand New are must hears. They are just so unique as a band and that voice is incredible. Listen to a live version of a song and then the studio version or see them in concert. All sound exactly the same. Still selling out 15k arena's all over Europe 35 years after their first album.
Simply Red is a British soul and Pop band which was formed in Manchester in 1985. The lead singer/ songwriter Mick Hucknall, who, by the time the band was initially disband in 2010 was the only original band left. " HOLDING BACK THE TEARS" and " IF YOU DON'T KNOW ME BY NOW" reached #1 in the UK charts. Nice video, nice reaction. ❤ IF YOU DON'T KNOW ME BY NOW, was one of my favorites. ❤
The way I feel about the song is that it's also a song that has a very underlying message and the message is simply this: at some point in your life you reflect back to when you were a child and you do this chronological timeline in your mind and you think about good and bad times from when you were a kid as far back as you can remember and all the way till now and I think that most people have regrets or ask themselves how did I get to this point of my life when I had things so good or when I had things bad and when he said wasted all those years a lot of people have wasted a lot of years of their life for whatever reason. So I think that this song is very much about regret as much as wanting something in your life to be better. I'm 45 this year and I can relate to the song because I feel like there's a lot that I missed out on and as I'm older I say to myself I wish that I could do things differently had I known what I know now.
Well Simply Red Is an English band and Mick has a beautiful voice I just love it when you appreciate our music and yes Mel he's still with us there only from the 80s he's still touring today and I would love to go see them but as we all know everything is on hold at the moment I think if it hadn't been for you guys I would have gone crazy by now 💖love you guys 💖from your sister Denise in England 💖🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧😘💖👋XX
Dude check him out on YT interviews!🥰💖 Gets his inspiration from Motown Jazz Soul-sings from the bottom of his Heart & Soul! That song is about his mom leaving him & his dad when Mick was 3 years old. Devastated him. He kept waiting for her to come back but she never did. Check him out: 'Angel' with Quincy Jones (or separately)', his concert vids from 90s to the present. 'Drowning in my own Tears' 'Grandma's Hands'. Loved your expression when he got to the best part 💞 IMO - THE MOST PHENOMENAL VOICE ON THE PLANET!!! He's also known as the Blue Eyed Soul Singer. YES- you don't want the song to end - THAT VOICE!!! 💘💟💖
He was born in 1961. Yes, He's still living. He was in a group called the Frantic Elevators when he was in his late teens in 1978. Yes he's still with Simply Red. Look up the songs If You Don't Know Me By Now, Fairground, Sunrise. Money's Too Tight To Mention.
Keep on keepen on!! I like him and his songs. I don't know much about him really. Bon Jovi/ Kid Rock Old Time Rock & Roll. Cheryl / Kid Rock I put your picture away.
Very nice review. I like the fact you were really trying to dissect the song the video and the meaning behind it. Simply Red is a fantastic singer! Check out "Something's Got Me Started" and Money's Too Tight To Mention" by Simply Red you will enjoy those songs!
I saw them live at one of the concerts my favourite band . This song does risk about his mother leaving I think he was about 17 when he wrote this song 😘😚UK
Smooth easy listening music. Soulful, jazzy, and you can find what you want in it. I'm surprised you haven't heard this song before, it has gotten a whole lot of radio play over the years. If you like smooth music, check out "Advice For The Young At Heart" by Tears For Fears. I'm sure you will like it.
I saw Simply Red when they toured with this song back in 1985/86 when I was interning at a radio station. I met the lead singer Mick Hucknall and the band after the show and they were great. Seeing them live was an amazing experience. If i remember correctly, their first hit was "Money's Too Tight to Mention" and it's worth checking out. I'm working my way through your videos so I don't know if you've reacted to that one yet. Here's a link in case you haven't: ua-cam.com/video/DrUB0g8Vjgg/v-deo.html
Written during the dark dark times of socialism in the UK. 30 hour workweek...off the charts unemployment and inflation. Thatcher and RR turned all of this around. Be careful what you ask for. Socialism is nothing but pain on top of pain. Of course, this song not about that but definitely had to be part of the mood in the UK at that time which was very depressing and difficult.
You should have more likes, it's BS because you guys didn't pause it or say anything yet I knew how you felt about it and that's a great reaction video 👍👍✌✌

I remember listening to this song on the radio in the summer of 1986. I was in love with my girlfriend and life was good.
Me too, I remember slow dancing with my girlfriend to this song; in love, life WAS good.

Mick Hucknall the lead singer of Simply Red wrote this in his bedroom when he was 17. Amazing.
Video was filmed in a beautiful coastal town in the north east of England called Whitby

Simply Red -- If You Don't Know Me By Now 😎
Mater=Mother
Pater=Father

La mia bellissima GIOVENTÙ, grazie
Canzone meravigliosa e la voce di Mick stupenda ❤❤❤
This is a timeless classic.

Nice video, nice reaction. ❤ IF YOU DON'T KNOW ME BY NOW, was one of my favorites. ❤
Simply Red is and essentially always was Mick Hucknell and others
He was abandoned by his Mother when he was 4 years old and that inspired this song...........
You saw him in the 80’s now watch him 20+ years later in the 2000’s - try “Sunrise”. You’ll see his music is timeless
And 2019's Blue Eyed Soul. Still going strong, Try Thinking of You
Simply red does a great version of if you don't know me
Soooo great I agree, the 80's.
I thought you would have finished the title of that song by now...
This song has nothing to do with Politics.
