    I think people miss gatekeeping because fashion is like music where everyone weighs in on it and have zero education. So when fashion lovers feel like their favorite designer is bending to the will of people on twitter that just wanna go viral for hating, it’s kinda frustrating

    I worked at ELLE for almost 9 years (I started as an intern, got a job as a Chief Editor`s assistant and Fashion Stylist then got promoted to Executive Editor) and it took me about 7 years of working for FREE, yes most of my writing and styling gigs ended up being unpaid because no one (in my country) really values these professions. I recently quit because I couldn`t sustain myself anymore with the insultingly low income I got being an Editor at different 3 magazines. Just a heads-up on the reality of the "glamorous" fashion world.

    • @hey_savi
      @hey_savi 11 місяців тому +12

      Absolutely correct - I still work as a freelance writer/editor here and there next to my full time marketing career (in luxury fashion), because it's honestly entirely unsustainable. The truth is most of the industry (like all of the arts) is populated with people who have the privilege not to worry about rent, savings, pensions and proper compensation. I do see some bright sides around breaking into the industry via social media that might be able to diversify/democratise the space but even then, its not going to change much. Have also experienced so much backstabbing and shady behaviour in the industry that it's truly not for the faint of heart.

    Something interesting you made me think about in fashion when you talked about not having any desire to design clothes: Fashion is a rare art-form where the consumer exercises their creativity when they consume. Unlike music or books or movies, when you buy a wonderful garment, you naturally express yourself creatively by how you pair it with outfits and incorporate it into your life. There really isn't the same kind of gap for someone who loves fashion to need to create whole garments to feel creatively engaged in the same way I see a lot of people who love music feel the push to make their own music or play an instrument or how people who love to read often are compelled to write. Just a thought.

    I feel compelled to share: so I started sewing so my family and I could have clothes made from better fibers than what we could find affordably in stores. But my goal is to create a wardrobe of clothes that are slightly elevated compared to my usual athletic leisure wardrobe of shorts and tees. So now I have cotton and linen and cotton/linen dresses that are comfortable for daily wear, look great layered up and I look and feel 100% better- not to mention it’s so much easier to regulate temperature than anything I could buy in the store. Everyone always asks if sewing your own clothes is less expensive…. No, not if you are buying $5 tees from Walmart. But yes! If you want something better. So worth it imo. Thanks for letting me share, love you and Dani so much!

    • @brigittastone-johnson7683
      @brigittastone-johnson7683 11 місяців тому +6

      Agreed. I started sewing again, for similar reasons also I just can’t find clothing that fits. But if I have to say to another person, yes I designed and made this shirt. No I have zero desire to turn my hobby into a business. I just like doing this thing.

    Tbh, about the "having a big audience before making clothing" thing, my first clothing item for another person was a wedding dress I threw together when her og dress idea didn't work.
    Do I haaaate how it looks, because it isnt pressed, its got some pulling and the darts are a bit wonky, completely unhemmed and *wrinkly* because I finished it 2 hours before the ceremony started?
    Absolutely.
    This was meant to be seen by less than 200 people.
    And you know what? I got nearly every single person there come up to me like "did you really make that dress???? Its GORGEOUS!"
    And now its a little footnote in my portfolia like "hey, this was my first free draft, first garment ever, and this was the reception.
    I make a lot of my own clothing, and everyone who compliments any given outfit gets a "oh, thank you! I made it" and that's the same idea.
    My long winded, meandering point being that you don't need an audience. Youll find one after the clothes are made and out in the world.

    We live in a society where we always think about monetizing our hobbies and when a lot of us get into fashion or sewing we think we should become a part of the industry, but not everyone is willing to do the work, and the barrier to enter is needed to teach us were we stand in reality and it protects them from tourists,,,,,,,,,, like me lol...

As a man in his Mid 50's I will dare share that although there is nothing wrong if one chooses to go the hardway in anything in Life the reality is that many things require money. So as Bliss pointed out in this video, if you got to drive a truck and make some money to build on the funds go do it. Look at it this way, work to earn in order to do outside of work what you love!

I love what I’ve learned and I’m really grateful but as time has passed, I just hate making clothes as they want and you know, just frustrated that I can’t do my things how I want them to be. So now I’m in this dilema of getting out and explore and really knock doors as you are saying in the video, and get involved in the industry but at the same time continue to create and make clothes, learn jewelry and other things I want to explore. The question is, should I do that and leave school although I graduate in 1 year and a half? What you think?

    Remember back to even 1992 (some of us actually can lol) think about how hard it would have been to break into the industry then.. I pick 1992 because many brands were experiencing their zenith right then. Save for someone like Stella McCartney (no prizes for guessing where her seed money came from??) Even Alexander McQueen wasnt exactly poor, as he makes out and already had connections, you werent coming in unless you had money or had been a bitch basically for bigwigs in the industry for years like Gaultier or Lagerfeld (okayy, we'll let you try that damn collection you keep rabbiting on about just shut up already) It's not just the look of fashion that is great, it's the fit and quality that make people spend $4000 on a Valentino suit, vs a $40 one from Target. I'm oversimplifying here, but there is good and bad about less barriers and gatekeeping - now everyone is trying it, but people who think they can get paid $250k a year to hang out and occassionally get coffee and croissants for Pierpaolo at Val have got another thing coming.

    Fashion people are usually victioms of their own hype. Thats the whole problem. Fashion industry, the cultural thing is wholly different from act of selling and producing clothes. Just to think. Youngest self made billionaire in the world is founder of a clothing brand and obviously he is not a fashion designer and didnt come through the system. Problem is you go to these showrooms where you rub shoulders with insiders and select fashion folks. You want to convice other poor people who have the same passion about originality and likability of your product while you are left at the mercy of a potential customer instead of putting customer at the fore front. There are gazzilion people who made huge amounts of money by selling clothes in the past 10 years they just dont seek approval of other fashion folks as their primal motivator and thats the whole difference. Seriously, thats all it is.

    I think gatekeeping is underrated!
    When the audience gets too muddy & too oversaturated with people who want to "look the part" rather than "BE" the part you get things like people who don't even shop at Balenciaga or know who "Demna" is have a say in canceling it while they type on their iPhone that was made by an African slave, BUT iPhone's aren't as convenient to cancel since everyone has one, but not everyone has Balenci so that one is ok to cancel lmao!. Kering has changed their whole approach with monitoring Balenciaga (to an extent that's great) off the opinions of people who aren't even their audience. With the current version of capitalism, of course, gatekeeping is more challenging, but I exercise it in ways of not telling people whose intentions I do not trust my favorite places I go eat at to avoid things changing due to people who are there for the grem & not because they genuinely enjoy the place.
    Thanks for reading if you got this far

    Love you both and all the hard work you do. I know Daniella is shy but can we quickly meet her sometime? It’s kinda weird to hear her voice and hear about her and not see her. Just an introduction would be really appreciated.

    every video i see, i just want to push the back sofa a bit to the left. i know your father works in decor. right now, the right arm clashes with the staircase. if we push it to the left, that won't happen, and the back of the sofa will make a beautiful harmonious curve with the stairs. at the same time, there might be too much negative space in the right. if i ever come to america, i'll take a flight anywhere just to push the sofa a bit to one side, a bit to the other.

      i had never noticed the toned-down almodóvar color scheme of your house. the reds add lots of luxury to the set, make you more credible as a fashion specialist.

    Attention To This Important Announcement: Tabi Boots are now tacky. they were supposed to come from this mysterious brand, but the brand put the style onto everything and produced it to death. there are probably tabi havaianas at this point. they are part of a radical look. people use it as a "i'm kind of modern". owens boots or nothing.

    1st of all i think you are great at what you do, and thank you for giving your all to this channel, it shows. BUT can you please please please take it down a notch or 20, you are already so knowledgeable, and the things you say are so interesting, if you could simply drop this naive and youthful overtly energeting tone??????? it is so annoying that i can't fisnish your videos, even though i want to. Time to grow into the shoes you were clearly made for.

    there's this guy @imdanielsimmons who capitalized on the fact that he's australian, super gostoso, and has an elevated minimal house, got followers, released a brand recently and it appears to be going well. if you're hot, freudian capitalism says you deserve money. go ahead, take it, start your brand. it's the rick owens thing: go to the gym, get rid of all your furniture, buy something black, become one of the most acclaimed contemporary fashion designers.
